Times Cited Count:2 Percentile:8.12(Environmental Sciences)Five intercomparisons of in situ spectrometry by 6-7 participating teams have been conducted between December 2011 and August 2015 at sites in Fukushima prefecture which affected by the fallout of FDNPS accident occurred in March 2011. The evaluated deposition densities agreed within 5-6% in terms of coefficient of variation (CV) for radiocesium (Cs and Cs), by our best achievement, and the ratio of Cs/Cs in deposition density agreed within 1-2% in CV, through five intercomparisons. These results guarantee the accuracy of the measurements of the mapping project. Two different methods for intercomparison were conducted: (1) sequential measurements at an identical point; and (2) simultaneous measurements in a narrow area within 3 m radius. In a comparison between the two methods at a site, no significant difference was observed between the results. The standard protocols for the two different intercomparison methods were proposed based on our experience.

Times Cited Count:22 Percentile:67.44(Environmental Sciences)The deposition densities of radiocesium and the air dose rates were repeatedly measured in a large number of undisturbed fields within the 80km zone that surrounds the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant site between 2011 and 2016, and features of their temporal changes were clarified. The average air dose rate excluding background radiation in this zone decreased to about 20% of the initial value during the period from June 2011 to August 2016, which was essentially a result of the radioactive decay of Cs with a half-life of 2.06y. The air dose rate reduction was faster than that expected from the decay of radiocesium by a factor of about two, with most of this reduction being attributed to the penetration of radiocesium into the soil. The average deposition densities of Cs and Cs in fields that were not decontaminated were found to have decreased nearly according to their expected radioactive decay, which indicated that the movement of radiocesium in the horizontal direction was relatively small. The effect of decontamination was apparently observed in the measurements of air dose rates and deposition densities. Nominally, the average air dose rates in the measurement locations were reduced by about 20% by decontamination and other human activities, of which accurate quantitative analysis is and continue to be a challenge.

The Westcott convention and some of its approximations were considered. The accuracy of the results strongly depends on the assumptions that are made about the neutron energy distribution, which is mostly parameterised as a sum of a thermal and an epi-thermal component. Resonance integrals derived from such data can be strongly biased. When the energy dependence of the cross section is known and information about the neutron energy distribution is available, a method to correct for a bias on the cross section at thermal energy is proposed. Reactor activation measurements to determine the thermal Am(n, ) cross section reported in the literature were reviewed, where the results were corrected to account for possible biases. These data combined with results of time-of-flight measurements give a capture cross section 720 (14) b for Am(n, ) at thermal energy.

The high-performance computer system Helios which is located at The Computational Simulation Centre (CSC) in The International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) started its operation in January 2012 under the Broader Approach (BA) agreement between Japan and the EU. The Helios system has been used for magnetised fusion related simulation studies in the EU and Japan and has kept high average usage rate. As a result, the Helios system has contributed to many research products in a wide range of research areas from core plasma physics to reactor material and reactor engineering. This project review gives a short catalogue of domestic simulation research projects. First, we outline the IFERC-CSC project. After that, shown are objectives of the research projects, numerical schemes used in simulation codes, obtained results and necessary computations in future.

A method of deducing the I-131 concentration in a radioactive plume from the time history of peak count rates determined from pulse height spectra obtained from an NaI(Tl)scintillation detector employed as a detector of a monitoring post was presented. The concentrations of I-131 in the plumes were estimated from the count rates using the calculated response of the NaI(Tl) detector with egs5 for a model of a plume uniformly containing I-131. This method was applied to the data from the monitoring posts at Nuclear Science Research Institutes of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). The estimated time history variation of I-131 concentrations in plumes was in fair agreement with those measured directly by an air sampling method. The difference was less than a factor of 4 for plumes that arrived on March 15 and March 21, indicating relatively high I-131 concentrations among the plumes studied in this work.

JAEA plans to apply narrow gap TIG welding with FMYJJ1 which is full austenitic stainless filler material to manufacture TFC structure. FMYJJ1 is specified in "Codes for Fusion Facilities -Rules on Superconducting Magnet Structure (2008)". In order to evaluate effect of base material combinations and thickness of welded joint on tensile properties at 4 K, tensile tests were conducted at 4 K by using tensile specimens taken from 40 mm thickness weld joints of four combinations and 200 mm thickness ones of two combinations of base materials. These weld joints were manufactured by one side narrow gap TIG welding with FMYJJ1. As the results, it was confirmed that yield and tensile strengths of welded joint at 4K were decreased with decreasing of nitrogen of base material, and there were no large distribution of strengths at 4 K along the thickness of welded joints of 200 mm thickness.

This report is compilation of 4 years tests and experiments of simulated alpha-ray irradiation on diverse materials for glove box application at Plutonium Fuel Development Center, Tokai, JAEA. Specimens prepared from the materials are irradiated with He ion beam whose kinetic energy was 5 MeV and sent to exterior observation, optical microscopy and tensile tests. Experiments revealed ion-irradiation generally makes tens of micrometers of deteriorated layer which is hardened and discolored on the surface of the specimens. According to dose, tensile properties such as tensile strength and elongation at break decrease generally. Tensile strength decrease is expected to ascribe to stress concentration on cracks of irradiation-damaged surface and rupture. Lead-contained glove, which is ordinarily used on highly -radiative environments, saturates the decrease of its tensile strength around fluence of 1.4e+14 cm. In addition, deterioration was accelerated for tension-loaded material and the saturation is around 4.6e+13 cm for 100%-extended specimens. The candidates of alternative new materials are two kinds of developed chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSM) and conductive rubber, which were experimented and tested in like manner. From the results and inherent properties of these materials, one kind of CSM and conductive rubber are relatively promising. Gloves used at low-dose environments and vinyl chloride applied for glove ports were also experimented and tested, and quantitative data were which are useful for life-elongation measure obtained. The irradiation tests on this report are unprecedented ones with low-energy ion, and the obtained quantitative data of material properties and deterioration are scientifically rare and important.

Times Cited Count:39 Percentile:86.77(Physics, Nuclear)Using quasi-monochromatic laser-Compton scattering rays, total photoneutron cross sections were measured for Pb near neutron threshold with a high-efficiency 4 neutron detector. Partial 1 and 1 photoneutron cross sections along with total cross sections were determined for Pb at four energies near threshold by measuring anisotropies in photoneutron emission with linearly-polarized rays. The 1 strength dominates over the 1 strength in the neutron channel where 1 photoneutron cross sections show extra strength of the pygmy dipole resonance in Pb near the neutron threshold corresponding to 0.32-0.42% of the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rule. Several units of B(1) strength were observed in Pb just above neutron threshold, which correspond to an 1 cross section less than 10% of the total photoneutron cross section.

Times Cited Count:3 Percentile:73.5(Physics, Applied)The TF coil conductor was composed of 900 NbSn superconducting strands and 522 Cu strands protected by circular sheath tube (jacket) with the outer diameter of 43.7 mm. The jacket section is a seamless tube made of modified 316LN. JAEA tested different types of tensile specimen (Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) type and ASTM type) cut from jacket. ASTM type specimen has longer and wider reduced section than those of JIS type specimen. Elongation of as received condition is not dependent on specimen shape. But after cold work and aging, the elongation is deteriorated due to a sensitization and scattering of elongation is larger than that of as received condition. Fracture mode of aged jacket is "cup and cone fracture", which have a mixture of inter granular at center area and trans-granular factures in circumference area. It is considered that initiation of fracture is more sensitive on test specimen shape with low ductility.

Times Cited Count:2 Percentile:63.45(Physics, Applied)A prediction method for tensile strengths at liquid helium temperature (4K) has been developed in order to rationalize qualification tests of cryogenic structural materials used in large superconducting magnet for a fusion device. This method is to use quadratic curves which are expressed as a function of carbon and nitrogen contents and strengths at room temperature. This study shows results of tensile tests at 4K and confirmation of accuracy of prediction method for tensile strengths at 4K for large forgings and thick hot rolled plates of austenitic stainless steels, which can be used in the actual coil case and radial plates of the ITER toroidal field coils. These products are 316LN having high nitrogen from 0.09 to 0.24% and maximum thickness is 600mm. As the results, it was confirmed that the tensile strengths of these products at 4K can be predicted by using appropriate quadratic curves. And distribution of strengths for each product was estimated.

The CS conductor is composed of 576 Nb Sn superconducting strands and 288 Cu strands assembled together into a multistage cable and protected by a circle-in-square sheath tube (jacket) with the outer dimension of 49 mm. In preparation for CS conductor production, the following R&D activities have been performed; (1) Mechanical tests at 4 K have been performed for jacket candidate materials such as 316LN and JK2LB, (2) Welding test for filler selection, (3) Measurement of coefficient of sliding friction using a 100-m long dummy cable, (4) Deformation characteristics of the conductor cross section after compaction and spooling. As a result of these R&D, the CS conductor jacket manufacturing technologies have been confirmed to start the procurement of the CS conductor.

Large forged products were produced and their mechanical properties at 4K were evaluated. In addition, the following activities have been performed; (1) to optimize the design of each weld type identified in the manufacturing sequence, (2) to qualify typical welding procedure including repair, (3) to establish welding techniques other than narrow gap TIG welding with FMYJJ1, (4) to demonstrate the manufacturing procedures through manufacture of 1-m mockups and full-scale segments of TFC structure. This paper describes the results of material qualification and industrialization activities of manufacturing processes of ITER TFC structure.
