Application of indentation technique to material degradation evaluation in the mercury target vessel for spallation neutron sources

Wakui, Takashi; Saito, Shigeru; Futakawa, Masatoshi

Jikken Rikigaku, 24(4), p.212 - 218, 2024/12

Irradiation damage is one of the main factors determining the lifetime of the mercury target vessel for spallation neutron source in J-PARC. To understand material degradation of the used vessels, it is planned to conduct an evaluation using inverse analyses with indentation tests on the structural materials of the used vessels and numerical experiments. This evaluation technique was applied to two kinds of ion-irradiated materials with different displacement damage doses, in which the irradiation condition was simulated. It could be confirmed that the ultimate strength increased, and the total elongation decreased with increasing irradiation. These trends are like the material degradation behaviors which have been reported by using small specimen's tensile tests.

The ductile properties of irradiated materials are one of the important indicators related to their structural integrity. Indentation tests are used for evaluating the ductile properties easily and rapidly. Constants in the material constitutive equation were identified via inverse analysis using the Kalman filter, such that the numerical experimental results reproduced the indentation test results. Numerical tensile experiments were conducted using stress-strain curves with the identified constants to obtain nominal stress-strain curves. Furthermore, two methods were proposed for evaluating the total elongation. Evaluated minimum total elongation was 10 %. The evaluation results of ion-irradiated materials were similar to the tensile test results of irradiated materials.

We investigated the stability of oxide nano particles in oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) steel, which is a promising candidate material for next-generation reactors, under neutron irradiation at high temperature to high doses. MA957, a 14Cr-ODS steel, was irradiated with Joyo in Japan Atomic Energy Agency under irradiation conditions of 130 dpa at 502$$^{circ}$$C, 154 dpa at 589$$^{circ}$$C, and 158 dpa at 709$$^{circ}$$C. Three-dimensional atom probe (3D-AP) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation were performed to characterize the oxide particles in the ODS steels. A high number density of Y-Ti-O particle was observed in the unirradiated and irradiated samples. Almost no change in the morphology of the oxide particles, i.e. average diameter, number density, and chemical composition, has been observed in the samples irradiated to 130 dpa at 502$$^{circ}$$C and to 154 dpa at 589$$^{circ}$$C. A slight decrease in number density was observed in the sample irradiated to 158 dpa at 709$$^{circ}$$CC. The hardness of any of the irradiated samples was almost unchanged from that of the unirradiated sample. It was revealed that the oxide particles existed stable, and the strength of the material was sufficiently maintained even after being neutron irradiated to high dose of $$sim$$160 dpa at high temperature up to 700$$^{circ}$$C. A part of this study includes the results of MEXT Innovative Nuclear Research and Development Program Grant Number JPMXD0219214482.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been developing 9Cr-oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel as a fuel cladding material for sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs). Previous studies have formulated the creep rupture equation for 650$$^{circ}$$C to 850$$^{circ}$$C. However, little data have been obtained above 850$$^{circ}$$C, and no equation has been formulated. This study conducted creep tests to evaluate creep strength at 700$$^{circ}$$C to 1000$$^{circ}$$C. Two creep test methods, the internal pressure and ring creep tests under development, were used, and the validation of the ring creep test method was conducted. The results showed that 9Cr-ODS steel undergoes almost no strength change due to the matrix's phase transformation, and a single equation can express a creep rupture strength from 700$$^{circ}$$C to 1000$$^{circ}$$C. In validating the ring creep test method, analysis clarified the effect of stress concentration on the specimen. Plastic deformation occurs at high initial stress and may lead to early rupture. The results will be essential for future creep testing and evaluation of neutron-irradiated 9Cr-ODS steel.

JAEA has been developing 9Cr-oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) tempered martensitic steel(TMS) as a candidate material for the fuel cladding tubes of sodium-cooled fast reactors(SFRs). The reliable prediction of in-reactor creep-rupture strength is critical for implementing the 9Cr-ODS TMS cladding tube in the SFR. This study investigated the quantitative correlation between the creep properties of 9Cr-ODS TMS at 700 $$^{circ}$$C and the dispersions of nanosized oxides by analyzing the creep data and the material's nanostructure. The possibility of deriving a formula for estimating the in-reactor creep properties of 9Cr-ODS TMSs based on an analysis of the nanostructure of neutron-irradiated 9Cr-ODS TMSs was also discussed. The creep properties of 9Cr-ODS TMS at 700 $$^{circ}$$C closely correlated with the dispersion of nanosized oxide particles. The correlation between creep-rupture lives and nanosized oxide particle dispersion was determined using existing creep models. The elucidation of correlation between the stress exponent of secondary creep rate and the nanostructure is essential to enhance future modeling reliability and formulation.

Recently, $$^{177}$$Lu is considered as one of the most important medical RIs for treating neuroendocrine tumors. A plan to produce $$^{177}$$Lu with high purity by using enriched $$^{176}$$Yb samples with irradiation of deuteron beams in accelerators has been discussed. However, since the other Yb isotopes contained in the Yb sample interacts with deuterons, Lu isotopes other than $$^{177}$$Lu are produced as impurities. Since the purity of $$^{177}$$Lu is important for medical use, a method to evaluate the impurity of Lu has been required. In this study, we proposed a new method to estimate production yields of each Lu isotopes in Yb samples with arbitrary isotopic compositions by using excitation functions of Yb($$d,x$$)Lu reactions and the particle transport calculation code PHITS. The method plays an important role in discussing the isotopic composition of enriched samples to produce high-purity $$^{177}$$Lu using accelerators.

Tsai, P.-E.; Iwamoto, Yosuke; Hagiwara, Masayuki*; Sato, Tatsuhiko; Ogawa, Tatsuhiko; Satoh, Daiki; Abe, Shinichiro; Ito, Masatoshi*; Watabe, Hiroshi*

Proceedings of 2017 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference (NSS/MIC 2017) (Internet), 3 Pages, 2018/11

The energy spectra of primary knock-on atoms (PKAs) are essential for radiation damage assessment in design of accelerator facilities. However up to date the experimental data are still limited, due to the poor mass resolution and the high measurement threshold energies in the conventional setup of nuclear physics experiments using solid state detectors, which are typically above a few MeV/nucleon. In this study, a novel detection system consisting of two time detectors and one dE-E energy detector is proposed and being constructed to measure the PKA spectra. The system and detector design was based on Monte Carlo simulations by using the PHITS code. The PHITS simulations show that the system is able to distinguish the PKA isotopes above $$sim$$0.2-0.3 MeV/nucleon for A=20$$sim$$30 amu; the PKA mass identification thresholds decrease to $$<$$0.1 MeV/nucleon for PKAs lighter than 20 amu. The detection system will be tested in the summer of 2017, and the test results will be presented at the conference.

We report the results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements on particular phonons of a superconducting (SC) Ca$$_{10}$$Pt$$_4$$As$$_8$$(Fe$$_{1-x}$$Pt$$_x$$As)$$_{10}$$ with the onset transition temperature $$T_c sim 33$$ K to investigate mainly what roles orbital fluctuation plays in Cooper pairing, where we observed a slight softening of the in-plane transverse acoustic mode corresponding to the elastic constant $$C_{66}$$. This softening starts at temperature $$T$$ well above the SC $$T_c$$, as $$T$$ decreases. An anomalously strong change of the scattering intensity of in-plane optical modes was observed at the M point of the pseudo tetragonal reciprocal space in the range of 35 $$< omega <$$ 40 meV with decreasing $$T$$ from far above $$T_c$$. Because this $$omega$$ region mainly corresponds to the motion of Fe and As atoms in the FeAs planes, the finding presents information on the coupling between the orbital fluctuation of Fe $$3d$$ electrons and the lattice system, useful for studying the possible roles of orbital fluctuation in the pairing mechanism and/or the appearance of the so-called nematic phase.
