Five intercomparisons of in situ $$gamma$$ spectrometry by 6-7 participating teams have been conducted between December 2011 and August 2015 at sites in Fukushima prefecture which affected by the fallout of FDNPS accident occurred in March 2011. The evaluated deposition densities agreed within 5-6% in terms of coefficient of variation (CV) for radiocesium ($$^{134}$$Cs and $$^{137}$$Cs), by our best achievement, and the ratio of $$^{134}$$Cs/$$^{137}$$Cs in deposition density agreed within 1-2% in CV, through five intercomparisons. These results guarantee the accuracy of the measurements of the mapping project. Two different methods for intercomparison were conducted: (1) sequential measurements at an identical point; and (2) simultaneous measurements in a narrow area within 3 m radius. In a comparison between the two methods at a site, no significant difference was observed between the results. The standard protocols for the two different intercomparison methods were proposed based on our experience.

The deposition densities of radiocesium and the air dose rates were repeatedly measured in a large number of undisturbed fields within the 80km zone that surrounds the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant site between 2011 and 2016, and features of their temporal changes were clarified. The average air dose rate excluding background radiation in this zone decreased to about 20% of the initial value during the period from June 2011 to August 2016, which was essentially a result of the radioactive decay of $$^{134}$$Cs with a half-life of 2.06y. The air dose rate reduction was faster than that expected from the decay of radiocesium by a factor of about two, with most of this reduction being attributed to the penetration of radiocesium into the soil. The average deposition densities of $$^{134}$$Cs and $$^{137}$$Cs in fields that were not decontaminated were found to have decreased nearly according to their expected radioactive decay, which indicated that the movement of radiocesium in the horizontal direction was relatively small. The effect of decontamination was apparently observed in the measurements of air dose rates and deposition densities. Nominally, the average air dose rates in the measurement locations were reduced by about 20% by decontamination and other human activities, of which accurate quantitative analysis is and continue to be a challenge.

In situ $$gamma$$ spectrometry intercomparison in Fukushima, Japan

Mikami, Satoshi; Sato, Shoji*; Hoshide, Yoshifumi*; Sakamoto, Ryuichi*; Okuda, Naotoshi*; Saito, Kimiaki

Hoken Butsuri, 50(3), p.182 - 188, 2015/09

Intercomparison of in situ $$gamma$$ spectrometry was organized at a site contaminated by the radioactive fallout that originated from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. This intercomparison was conducted by eight teams from four different institutions, which have contributed to the government-led project to construct distribution maps of radionuclides deposited on the ground soil. The resultant $$^{134}$$Cs and $$^{137}$$Cs inventories evaluated by the participants agreed within 6% of the coefficient of variation, after correction for inhomogeneous distribution of the air dose rate. The evaluated $$^{40}$$K inventories agreed within 4% of the coefficient of variation. The authors estimated that these results were in good agreement for creating distribution maps of the radionuclide inventory in the ground soil.

We report recent results of time-resolved neutron reflectivity measurements for silver photo-diffusion into Ge$$_{x}$$S$$_{1-x}$$ (x=0.20, 0.33, 0.40) films performed on BL17 (SHARAKU). It is well known that silver diffuses into Ge-chalcogenide layer by visible light exposure with a distinct diffusion front, where the silver concentration abruptly drops off. Using an event recording system at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility, neutron reflectivity profiles were collected with a time-resolution of 30 seconds in the shortest case. It was found from the measurements that a relatively stable Ag-rich phase in the reaction layer is firstly formed, and then, slower diffusion occurs at the interface between Ag-rich and Ag-poor layers. Fourier transform analysis showed that the position of the interface is essentially fixed. This result is in contrast to the previously reported model of silver diffusion that postulates a mechanism involving progression of the diffusion front. The results of the measurements on Ag/Ge-Se films performed on the INTER instrument at ISIS are also reported.

We report the results of time-resolved neutron reflectivity measurements of Ag/a- Ge$$_{20}$$S$$_{80}$$/Si and a- Ge$$_{40}$$Se$$_{60}$$/Ag/ Si films taken while the films are exposed to visible light. Silver diffuses into an amorphous (a-) chalcogenide layer while visible light illuminates Ag/a-chalcogenide films. Neutron reflectometry is a suitable technique probing time evolution of the multi-layer structure without damaging the sample by the probe beam itself. It was found from the measurements of Ag/a-Ge$$_{20}$$S$$_{80}$$/Si films that a relatively stable Ag-rich phase in the reaction layer is first formed, and then, slower diffusion occurs at the interface between Ag-rich and Ag-poor layers. This result is in contrast to the previously reported model of silver diffusion that suggests a mechanism involving progression of the diffusion front. From the measurements of a-Ge$$_{40}$$Se$$_{60}$$/Ag/ Si films, we found enormous changes in the neutron reflectivity profile, including loss of total reflection region, with continuous illumination even after forming one homogeneous layer, which was about 60 min after starting illumination. At this stage, clear off-specular scattering was observed by a linear detector and a surface roughness was observed with naked eyes.

We report our recent results of neutron reflectivity measurements for Ag/a-Ge $$_{x}$$S$$_{1-x}$$ (x=0.2, 0.4) films under light illumination. The neutron reflectivity measurements have been performed on a polarized neutron reflectometer (BL17, SHARAKU) at Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), Japan. By using the time-of flight instrument with intensive pulsed neutrons produced by 300kW proton beams, time evolution of the neutron reflectivity under a light illumination has been revealed, with at least 2-min time resolution. From the detailed analysis, it was found for Ag 50nm/Ge $$_{40}$$S $$_{60}$$ 150nm films under a light illumination from the Ag layer side that there are two types of diffusion processes: a fast change observed in the first 10 min after illumination using a xenon lamp, which is then followed by a slow change observed after a 1 hour of additional light exposure. The result indicates that there is a comparatively stable (metastable) state in the Ag-doped Ge $$_{40}$$S $$_{60}$$ layer in terms of Ag composition, and the next silver diffusion process occurs by affecting the Ag-doped Ge $$_{40}$$S $$_{60}$$ layer / interface. This coincides with the Ge $$_{40}$$S $$_{60}$$ results of Wagner et al. obtained for Ag/As-S films. These results are also in accord with the results reported by some of us by modeling of the Ag transport in Ge-Se glass showing the presence of slow and fast moving Ag ions. Our result demonstrated that the idea of a two-step reaction process can be applied to Ge-chalcogenide system. We also discuss illumination-side dependence and Ge-composition dependence of reaction process.

High-energy-resolution core-level and valence-band photoelectron spectroscopic studies were performed for the heavy Fermion uranium compounds UGe$$_2$$, UCoGe, URhGe, URu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$, UNi$$_2$$Al$$_3$$, UPd$$_2$$Al$$_3$$, and UPt$$_3$$ as well as typical localized and itinerant uranium compounds to understand the relationship between the uranium valence state and their core-level spectral line shapes. The core-level spectra of UGe$$_2$$, UCoGe, URhGe, URu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$, and UNi$$_2$$Al$$_3$$ are rather similar to those of itinerant compounds, suggesting that U 5$$f$$ electrons in these compounds are well hybridized with ligand states. On the other hand, the core-level spectra of UPd$$_2$$Al$$_3$$ and UPt$$_3$$ show considerably different spectral line shapes from those of the itinerant compounds, suggesting that U 5$$f$$ electrons in UPd$$_2$$Al$$_3$$ and UPt$$_3$$ are less hybridized with ligand states, leading to the correlated nature of U 5$$f$$ electrons in these compounds.

GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometer) with the help of Chemical treatments has been applied to measure amount of helium (He) atoms in metals. Metal samples of cupper (Cu) contained He atoms were prepared using a 200kV ion implantation machine. The samples were solved in 0.5cc volume of 20% nitric acid in a H type reaction tube filled with nitrogen gases at 1 atmospheric pressure and He atoms in Cu metal were exhausted completely into the nitrogen gases. He analysis using GC/MS reveals that the metals contained 10$$^{16}$$ to 10$$^{17}$$ atoms of He. The He signal intensity and He ions implanted to the metals revealed good proportional relation.

Recently, photoemission experiments in soft X-ray region have attracted much attention due to their high sensitivities for bulk electronic structures of strongly correlated electron system. We have carried out the high-resolution photoemission experiments on some uranium compounds using soft X-ray synchrotron radiation from SPring-8 to understand their electronic structures. Bulk- and U 5$$f$$-sensitive band structure and Fermi surface were obtained for itinerant U 5$$f$$ compounds UFeGa$$_5$$ and USb$$_2$$, and they are compared with the results of the band structure calculations treating U 5$$f$$ states as being itinerant. In addition, we show the results of photoemission study on some heavy fermion compounds such as UPd$$_2$$Al$$_3$$ and UNi$$_2$$Al$$_3$$. The temperature dependences of the U 5$$f$$ electronic structure of UPd$$_2$$Al$$_3$$ will be also reported.

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on paramagnetic UFeGa$$_5$$ using soft X-ray synchrotron radiation ($$hnu$$=500 eV) and derived the bulk- and U 5$$f$$-sensitive electronic structure of UFeGa$$_5$$. Although the agreement between the experimental band strucure and the LDA calculation treating U 5$$f$$ electrons as beeing itinerant is qualitative, the morphology of the Fermi surface is well explained by the calculation. This result claims that the importance of the electron correlation effect even for the itinerant U 5$$f$$ compound.

A feasibility study of irradiation experiments were carried out on radiation effect of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steels and advanced austenitic stainless steels (PNC316) which are to be used in Fast Reactors. Void Swelling on the ion irradiation of PNC316 and 9Cr-ODS steels, which were irradiated in the Tandem accelerator in the Wakasawan Energy Research Center, were investigated. The samples were irradiated using 3 MeV He$$^{2+}$$ and 10 MeV C$$^{3+}$$ ions continuously. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) examination was conducted to evaluate the swelling and microstructure. From the observation of the void sizes and densities, void swelling was estimated. A reproducibility of irradiation experiment is confirmed in our system. As a result, it was found out that the void swelling induced by the ion beam irradiation shows the similar behavior to the neutron-irradiation induced void swelling in the Fast Reactor cores. This implies the applicability of the ion beam irradiation to the neutron-irradiation induced void swelling simulation.

In a case of nuclear accident at nuclear facililties, strong radiations such as g-rays and neutrons might radiate at a bust in the initial stage. For the establishment of dose estimation system for such accidents, the experiments were done using the 200 MeV proton beam accelerated by synchrotron in the W-MAST. DC current mode neutron detection sysstem was tested for hegh dose neutron irradiation, where ther system was composed by NE213 scintillate, photomultiplier and pre-amp. The following results were obtained: (1) When one fast neutron was injected into NE213, the shape of pre-amp output signal wa Gaussian type with the full width of half maximum of -40ns. (2) Linear relation between the radiation intensity of neutron and the proton current was obtained in the detection system. The neutron more than 25 Mcps can be detected using this detection system with the DC current mode. In order to establish the method of the dose of radioactivity measuring using the electron spin resonance (ESR) technique, stable free-radicals generated in the tooth enamel by gamma-ray irradiation as basis research was measured with ESR equipment, precise signal analysis was performed, and the dose evaluation characteristic of having purpose at higher sensitivity was investigated. Moreover, the relationship between the dose of radioactivity and ESR signal intensity of free-radical species which were generated by X-ray irradiation, and damping behavior of the signal were evaluated about seven kinds of analogous inorganic compound to tooth enamel.
