Structural transformation of zinc in metakaolin-based potassium-geopolymer as revealed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Limited understanding of zinc (Zn) immobilization in altered geopolymers limits prediction of waste-form durability. This study examined the local structure and retention mechanism of Zn in a metakaolin-based potassium geopolymer by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Zn-bearing samples were prepared from metakaolin, zinc chloride (ZnCl$$_{2}$$) solution, potassium silicate, and potassium hydroxide, cured at 40$$^{circ}$$C and 25$$^{circ}$$C for 48 h, and leached in deionized water for up to 90 days. Zn release was only 0.14%, with limited Al, Si, and Cl release. The main geopolymer framework was preserved after leaching. XAS showed that Zn was initially tetrahedrally coordinated with oxygen and linked to Si or Al tetrahedra. After leaching, Zn changed to octahedral coordination and formed a brucite-like Al-bearing co-precipitate, indicating strong Zn retention despite local structural alteration.

In addition, the background of this research is described from the necessity and the significance for site investigation and safety assessment, and the past progress. Radiation DNA damage is formed from direct and indirect effects. The direct effect is the interaction between DNA and a radiation, while the indirect effect is the chemical reaction between DNA and radiolytic chemical species. We believed that when the direct effect is induced, multiple lesions are formed within 10 base pairs (about 3.4 nm) of DNA. The damage reduces repair efficiency and induces biological effects. In this study, DNA damage induced by only indirect effects was quantitatively evaluated. Our results indicated that the multiple damage is formed when only 10s of eV energy is deposited to water in the vicinity of DNA, although its formation probability is less than 1%. In other words, the possibility of late biological effects cannot be excluded simply by imparting energy to water in the extreme vicinity of DNA without direct interaction between radiation and DNA. Our results are one of the most important findings for understanding low-dose radiation risk.

Although fast ion beams can damage DNA by chemical products such as secondary electrons produced by their interaction with water in living cells, the process of formation of these chemical products in the Bragg peak region used in particle therapy is not fully understood. To investigate this process, we performed experiments to evaluate the yields of radiolytic products produced when a liquid water jet in vacuum is irradiated with a MeV-energy carbon beam. In addition, ionization processes in water due to incident ions and secondary electrons were simulated using a radiation transport Monte Carlo code. The results indicated that the primary source of ionization in water is secondary electrons. Finally, we show that these elementary processes contribute to the development of radiation biophysics and biochemistry to study the formation mechanism of DNA damage.

In the design consideration of a geological disposal facility for radioactive waste, it is essential to perform a mechanical evaluation that takes into account phenomena that may occur from construction and operation to post-closure. With this background, we have developed the long-term mechanical analysis system MACBECE. In this research, we have built an analysis system that can consistently evaluate the mechanical behavior considering the thermal and hydraulic evolution after the closure of the repository by incorporating the constitutive model for unsaturated soils and coupling with the thermal-hydraulic analysis. As a validation, a mechanical analysis was conducted for the in-situ experiment for full-scale engineered barrier system performance experiment at Horonobe URL. Despite some discrepancies due to constraints in two-dimensional analysis, the extended functionality of the analysis code was confirmed to effectively repro-duce the measured data.

In order to investigate the cause of the increase in differential pressure in the primary helium circulator filter that occurred during the RS-14 cycle, a clogged filter was investigated. As a result of the investigation, deposits caused by silicone oil were confirmed on the surface of the filter element. These results revealed that the cause of filter clogging was silicone oil mixed into the primary system due to performance deterioration of the charcoal filter in the gas circulator of primary helium purification system. As a measure to prevent the recurrence of this event, in addition to the conventional management based on operating hours for replacing of charcoal filter in the gas circulator of primary helium purification system, we have established a new replacement plan for every three years.

Prototyping of a disk-loaded structure for muon acceleration

The muon linear accelerator is under development at J-PARC for precise measurement of muon anomalous mag-netic moment and electric dipole moment. Four 2592 MHz disk-loaded structures (DLSs) operating in the TM01-2$$pi$$/3 mode take charge of the acceleration of high-velocity muon from 70% to 94% of the speed of light. They have disk-iris apertures tapered to generate a quasi-constant gradient of 20 MV/m. Gradual variation in disk space at each cell is one of the structural features of the DLS for muon to synchronize the accelerating phase with the changing speed of muon. Therefore, the dimensions of both end cells are significantly different. Two prototypes of RF couplers and two 9-cell reference cavities with shapes of the end cells of the DLS at the first stage have been fabricated and tested. We validate our design RF parameters and establish a method for tuning the DLS in this paper.

The muon-dedicated linear accelerator is being developed for the muon g-2/EDM experiment at J-PARC. To suppress the decay loss during acceleration, the alternative phase focusing (APF) method inter-digital H-mode drift tube linac (IH-DTL) is adopted in the low-velocity region following a radio-frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ). We are planning to accelerate muons in 2025 using the RFQ and the IH-DTL which will accelerate muons from 8% to 30% of the speed of light with an operating frequency of 324 MHz. After the IH-DTL, a diagnostic beamline will be placed to measure the beam energy and quality after acceleration, and its design, which consists of magnets and bunchers, is underway. In this poster, we will report on the development status of the diagnostic beamline.

An Advanced digital feedback control system design for the muon linear accelerator

A unique muon linear accelerator (linac) for the muon g-2/EDM experiment at J-PARC is under development. Digital feedback (DFB) design employed in a low-level radio frequency (LLRF) control system is crucial to fulfilling therequired RF amplitude and phase specifications in the RF cavities for a stable and continuous acceleration of the whole bunched particles. To this end, a micro telecommunications computing architecture.4 (MicroTCA.4)-based compact and in-house DFB design, using VadaTech commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) RF system-on-chip (RFSoC) advanced mezzanine card (AMC), is aimed for the muon linac. This feedback control system will employ a direct sampling method that reduces the project cost by requiring less hardware employment for ultra-high frequency (UHF) and L-band accelerating structures. The present status and first results of the project will be reported in this paper.

A muon linac is under development for future muon g-2/EDM experiments at J-PARC. The linac provides a 212 MeV muon beam to an MRI-type compact storage ring. After the initial acceleration using the electrostatic field created by mesh and cylindrical electrodes, the muons are accelerated using four types of radio-frequency accelerators. To validate the linac design as a whole, end-to-end simulations were performed using General Particle Tracer. In addition, error studies were performed to investigate the effects on beam and spin dynamics of various errors in the accelerator components and input beam distribution. This paper describes the results of the end-to-end simulations and error studies.

High-power test of an APF IH-DTL prototype for the muon linac

We conducted a high-power test of a prototype cavity of a 324-MHz inter-digital H-mode drift tube linac (IH-DTL) for the muon g-2/EDM experiment at J-PARC. This prototype cavity (short-IH) was developed to verify the fabrication methodology for the full-length IH cavity with a monolithic DT structure. After 40 h of conditioning, the short-IH has been stably operated with an RF power of 88 kW, which corresponds to 10% higher accelerating field than the design field (E0) of 3.0 MV/m. In addition, the thermal characteristics and frequency response were measured, verifying that the experimental data was consistent with the three-dimensional model. In this paper, the high-power tests of this IH-DTL for muon acceleration are described.
