The influence of atmospheric water vapor on the multistep thermal decomposition of perlite concrete was investigated in detail by separating the component reaction steps using kinetic deconvolution analysis (KDA). The retardation of thermal decomposition of Ca(OH)$$_{2}$$ and the acceleration of thermal decomposition of CaCO$$_{3}$$ were identified as specific effect of atmospheric water vapor.

Recently, development of superconducting magnet system with high radiation resistance has been demanded for application in accelerator facilities such as CERN LHC. In order to realize superconducting magnet system with high radiation resistance, it is necessary to develop electrical insulator with high radiation resistance because the electrical insulator is made of organic materials whose radiation resistance is inferior to that of inorganic materials. We developed a glass fiber reinforced plastic with bismaleimide-triazine resin. The developed material showed excellent radiation resistance; the material evolved gases of 5$$times$$10 $$^{-5}$$mol/g and maintained flexural strength of 640MPa (90% of initial value).

The first observation of the energy distribution of electrons emitted from solids bombarded by MeV atom clusters is reported. In the backward direction, using graphite and Si bombarded by C$$_{n}$$$$^{+}$$ and Al$$_{n}$$$$^{+}$$ (n $$leq$$ 8), an appreciable suppression of electron emission has been observed at electron energies lower than $$sim$$10 eV. Electron yield per atom decreases with increasing n, and becomes less than 50% at n $$geq$$ 3, relative to the case of n = 1. The experimental results cannot be explained in terms of projectile stopping cross sections nor by the clearing-the-way effect. It is probable that the suppressed electron emission is a result of the suppression of the transport or surface transmission of the produced low-energy electrons, rather than of the suppression of ionization.

The construction of the Materials and Life Science building was started in the beginning of the fiscal year of 2004. After commissioning of the accelerator and beam transport sections in 2008, muon beams will be available for users in 2009. In this letter, the latest construction status of the J-PARC Muon Science Facility is reported.

Generally, a shotcrete use as the support of a tunnel to keep the stability. However, the condition of interface between a shotcrete and rock mass is unknown. Therefore, a laboratory tests under long-term immersion environment has been carried out to understand the mechanism of the change the interface. This report summarize the knowledges during the laboratory tests.

The design basis ground motions have been revised to improve the seismic resistance of nuclear power plants. The reduction of seismic forces not only horizontally but also vertically has required more critical than in the past to ensure the seismic resistance of components. Notably, the design of a Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor will require reducing the seismic forces applied to the components because of the components with thin wall thickness. To overcome this problem, the authors plan to introduce a seismic isolation system. When the sloshing wave height is small, it can be approximated with a linear vibration model. However, when the sloshing wave height increases and the sloshing becomes nonlinear, it is necessary to evaluate the wave height using other methods such as numerical analysis. Although the evaluation of nonlinear sloshing wave height is important, there are few examples which quantitatively evaluate the wave height of nonlinear sloshing. This paper reports on the development plan and an overview of the evaluation method for nonlinear sloshing wave height and load applied to cylindrical tanks.
