Development of a radio frequency quadrupole linac implemented with the equipartitioning beam dynamics scheme

Radio frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ) is the key component which realized modern high-current proton linacs, however, many RFQs are designed based on very conventional design schemes. We developed 3-MeV 50-mA H$$^-$$ (negative hydrogen) RFQ based on a beam space-charge physics concept. The equipartitioning scheme, which is widely used in the high intensity linac design, is implemented into the RFQ design. Design performances of 99.1% transmission, 0.24$$pi$$ mm mrad transverse normalized rms emittance, and 0.11$$pi$$ MeV deg for longitudinal direction are achieved with a vane length of 3 m and the final energy of 3 MeV. An RFQ employing this design concept was fabricated, and the design performance was confirmed by beam commissioning. In this paper, the design and result of the beam commissioning of this fully equipartitioned RFQ are described.

We have performed the beam-dynamics design of an H$$^{-}$$ radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) for the beam-current upgrade of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex linac (RFQ III). LINACSrfqDES was set up to support the conventional design method, i.e., design with CURLI-type shaper followed by constant bore radius and with constant intervane voltage, supplemented by keeping the equipartitioned condition in the gentle buncher section. For the particle simulation, LINACSrfqSIM was used. The obtained transmission, transverse and longitudinal emittance are 98.5%, 0.21 $$pi$$ mm mrad, and 0.11 $$pi$$ MeV deg for the input beam current of 60 mA and normalized rms emittance of 0.20 $$pi$$ mm mrad. This design satisfies the requirements of RFQ III.

Acceleration of a 17mA 100keV/u C$$^{6+}$$ ion beam has been successfully achieved with an RFQ linac by means of "Direct injection scheme". The Direct injection scheme is a new scheme for injecting an ion beam from a laser ion source to the RFQ linac without a low energy beam transport line to avoid a beam loss due to the space charge effect. The high current C$$^{6+}$$ beam is required for single turn injection to a synchrotron to reduce the size of synchrotron magnets. The high current C$$^{6+}$$ beam produced by an ion source with a Nd-YAG laser was injected to the RFQ linac by the Direct injection scheme. It has been proved experimentally that the fully-stripped carbon ion beam with a current more than 10mA can be accelerated by the RFQ linac.

We have been studying a new heavy-ion production technique called "direct plasma injection scheme", DPIS, since 2000. A new radio frequency quadrupole "RFQ" designed especially for the DPIS was commissioned in 2004 and very intense carbon beam was successfully obtained, reaching more than 60 mA accelerated current from the RFQ. Most of the contents of the accelerated beam was carbon 4+ as verified by beam analysis.

The carbon beam from a Nd-YAG laser ion source was accelerated successfully by an RFQ linac using Direct injection scheme. The "Direct injection scheme" is the way to inject an ion beam to the RFQ linac without a low energy beam transport line to avoid space charge effect due to a high intensity beam from the laser ion source. About 30mA of a carbon beam was detected by a faraday cup just behind the RFQ linac.

The International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) Accelerator Facility consists of two 125 mA, 40 MeV cw deuteron linacs which provide beams to the molten lithium Target Facility. The reference design for the Accelerator Facility has evolved through the several stages of the IFMIF program. A reference design report, with updated technical, cost and schedule information, is in preparation this year, and will be outlined in this paper.
