Analysis on the radiation response of solar cells with multi quantum wells (MQW) included in the quasi-intrinsic region between the emitter and the base layer is presented. We found that in the case of MQW devices, carrier removal (CR) effects are also observed. Experimental measurements and numerical simulations reveal that with increasing radiation dose, CR can cause the initially quasi-intrinsic background doping of the MQW region to become specifically n- or p-type. This can result in a significant narrowing and even the collapse of the electric field between the emitter and the base where the MQWs are located. The implications of the CR-induced modification of the electric field on the current-voltage characteristics and on the collection efficiency of carriers generated within the emitter, the MQW region, and the base are discussed for different radiation dose conditions. This paper concludes with a discussion of improved radiation hard MQW device designs.

The radiation response of multi quantum wall (MQW) triple junction and component cells was analyzed. Initial results show that for 1MeV electron irradiation the middle MQW cell governs the degradation of the triple junction. This is attributed the specific middle cell design, in particular the thick 0.98 $$mu$$m depletion region, and alternative, more radiation hard, designs are presented. Additionally, characterization studies, including dark IV, external quantum efficiency, electroluminescence, as well as defect characterization were investigated.

Search for a 2-quasiparticle high-$$K$$ isomer in $$^{256}$$Rf

We have identified an isomer with a half-life of 17 $$mu$$s in $$^{256}$$Rf through a calorimetric conversion electron measurement tagged with implanted $$^{256}$$Rf nuclei using the fragment mass analyzer at Argonne National Laboratory. The low population yield for this isomer suggests that this isomer should not be a 2-quasiparticle high-$$K$$ isomer which is typically observed in the N = 152 isotones, but should be a 4-quasiparticle one. Possible reasons of the non-observation of a 2-quasiparticle isomer are this isomer decays by fission with a half-life similar to that of the ground state of $$^{256}$$Rf. Another possibility, that there is no 2-quasiparticle isomer at all, would imply an abrupt termination of axially symmetric deformed shape at Z=104.

Experimental data on single-particle energies in nuclei around Z=100 and N=152 play an important role to test validity of theoretical predictions for shell structure of superheavy nuclei. We found high-K two-quasiparticle isomers in $$^{252}$$No and $$^{254}$$No, and evaluated energies of proton single-particle orbitals around Z=100. We also found a new high-K three quasiparticle isomer in $$^{257}$$Rf. Energies of neutron single-particle orbitals were also evaluated from experimental data of the $$alpha$$ decay of $$^{257}$$Rf. Comparisons between the present experimental data and various theoretical calculations for the proton single-particle orbitals indicate that the calculation by using the Woods-Saxon potential gives the best agreement with the data.

Dedicated experiments on TF ripple effects on the performance of tokamak plasmas have been carried out at JET. The TF ripple was found to have a profound effect on the plasma rotation. The central Mach number, M, defined as the ratio of the rotation velocity and the thermal velocity, was found to drop as a function of TF ripple amplitude from an average value of M = 0.40-0.55 for operations at the standard JET ripple of 0.08% to M = 0.25-0.40 for 0.5% ripple and M = 0.1-0.3 for 1% ripple. With standard co-current injection of neutral beam injection (NBI), plasmas were found to rotate in the co-current direction. However, for higher TF ripple amplitudes ($$sim1%$$) an area of counter rotation developed at the edge of the plasma, while the core kept its co-rotation.

Wideband low-output-impedance RF system for the second harmonic cavity in the ISIS synchrotron has been developed by the collaboration between ANL (US), KEK (Japan) and RAL (UK). Low output impedance is realized by the feedback from plate to grid of the final triode amplifier, resulting in less than 30 ohms over a wide frequency range of 2.7 - 6.2 MHz. The vacuum tubes in the driver and final stages are both operated in class A. High power test was performed with a ferrite-loaded second harmonic cavity, where the bias current was swept at 50 Hz repetition rate. The maximum voltage of 12 kV peak per accelerating gap was obtained stably at earlier period of an acceleration cycle. A beam test with this system is planned at the ISIS synchrotron soon.

In this paper a detailed analysis on the radiation response of solar cells with multi quantum-wells (MQW) included in the quasi-intrinsic region between the emitter and the base layer is presented. Whilst the primary source of radiation damage of photovoltaic devices is generally associated with minority carrier lifetime reduction, we found that in the case of MQW devices another effect of radiation damage, the so called carrier removal (CR) requires additional consideration. Experimental measurements and numerical simulations reveal that with increasing radiation dose, CR can alter the initially quasi-intrinsic background doping of the MQW region to become further n or p type. This can result in a significant narrowing and even in a collapse of the electrical field between the emitter and the base where the MQWs are located. Eventually, remarks for improved radiation hard MQW device designs are provided.
