This paper describes current efforts within the JAEA to develop a new materials surveillance technology for SFRs that aims at raising the confidence levels in operating reactors' structural integrity to the ones which could otherwise be achieved only by a vast amount of long-term material test data that needs decades to accumulate. The technology would allow for monitoring on-going materials degradation processes in an actual reactor, namely fatigue and creep-fatigue, by inserting a newly developed specimen for this purpose into the reactor and establishing procedures to observe and evaluate the specimen to get desired information such as the extent of degradation and residual life. To establish the test procedure, a passive creep-fatigue test model was developed in the framework of CNWG, a collaboration agreement between the US and Japan, and a demonstration test was performed under cyclic thermal loads using an electric furnace. As a result, the test specimen failed by several hundred thermal cycles. Macroscopic inspection of the specimen after the test showed the test had been performed successfully without buckling. Fracture surface observations suggested that the failure caused probably by fatigue or creep-fatigue.

This paper describes an experimental study for establishing a passive creep-fatigue test technique that mainly utilizes the difference in thermal expansion coefficients of the materials as material surveillance test technique that can be applied to evaluate the structural integrity of the fast reactor components when the components are used beyond the period assumed in the design. Using the test article designed with the aid of a finite element analysis, a long-term creep-fatigue test data has been successfully obtained. In the designing of the test article, it was essential to generate a adequate strain at the gauge portion of the specimen due to the difference of thermal expansion coefficients of the materials, without buckling. After much trial and error, an optimal shape and dimensions of the test article and the cyclic thermal load conditions are established. In the future, miniaturization of the test article for applying the established test technique to the actual nuclear reactors will be required.

A sodium cooled fast reactor (SFR) is one of the most relevant and decarbonized energy supply system with higher sustainability on natural resources, footprint, and waste management. It was planned in a strategic roadmap of fast reactor decided by Inter-Ministerial Council for Nuclear Power Japan in 2022 to start a conceptual design of a demonstration reactor from 2024 with a background of accumulated knowledge and experiences of SFR development. For example, a design and lifecycle simulation/evaluation system named ARKADIA has been developed to accelerate such design works. It will enable to take into account plant lifecycle, e.g., operation and maintenance, to the plant design and optimize it based on simulations and knowledgebase. This paper shows research progresses of ARKADIA, safety design and evaluations, codes and standards, fuel cycle, and SFR development projects in Japan.

The outline and development status of element functions and design optimization process in ARKADIA to transform advanced nuclear reactor design to meet expectations of a safe, economic, and sustainable carbon-free energy source are introduced. High entropy alloys tend to combine high strength with good ductility due to their inherent properties. This material is considered as a promising new material not only for higher-performance future general industrial applications, but also for increasing the durability and range of application of radiation-affected equipment in nuclear and radiation environments, and has been rapidly gaining attention in recent years. In this study, two types of high-entropy alloys (Fe-Mn-V-Cr-Al-C and Fe-Si-W-Cr-V) composed of low-radioactive elements (without Ni and Co) were prepared and their basic properties were evaluated for application as new functional materials to be used under radiation in high-energy accelerator target system components, nuclear reactors, fusion reactors, etc. and their basic properties were evaluated. The two materials under development in this study have unique properties in the following respects. The former is expected to be developed as a basic research for high-power motor materials as a new structural material and magnetic properties sharing the features of high strength and low radiation. On the other hand, the latter is expected to be applied as a new functional material in new engineering fields by mixing tungsten, which has the highest melting point among metallic elements, with vanadium, which has a considerably higher melting point, to raise the melting point of the alloy and to design an alloy with high strength.

The ARKAIDA has been developed to realize automatic optimization of plant design from safety evaluation for the advanced reactors represented by a sodium-cooled fast reactor. ARKADIA-Design offers functions to support design optimization both in normal operating conditions and design basis events. The multi-level simulation approach by the coupled analysis such as neutronics, core deformation, core thermal hydraulics was developed as one of the main technologies. On the other hand, ARKAIDA-Safety aims for safety evaluation considering severe accidents. As a key technology, the numerical methods for in- and ex-vessel coupled phenomena during severe accidents in sodium-cooled fast reactors were tested through a hypothetical severe accident event. Improvement of the ex-vessel model and development of the AI technology to find best design solution have been started.

The book, JSME Series in Thermal and Nuclear Power Generation Vol.3 Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor, was published as a 30th anniversary memorial project of Power & Energy Systems Division. This paper describes an introduction of the book on a part of key technologies regarding safety assessment, thermal-hydraulics, neutronics, and fuel and material development. This introductory paper also provides an overview of an integrated evaluation system named ARKADIA to offer the best possible solutions for challenges arising during the design process, safety assessment, and operation of a nuclear plant over its life cycle, in active use of the R&D efforts and knowledges on thermal-hydraulics and safety assessment with state-of-the-art numerical analysis technologies.
