The solvent extraction of Se, Zr, Pd, and Cs from nitric acid into 1-octanol (OC) and dodecane has been performed. These elements include long-lived radionuclides in spent nuclear fuels, so a simple separation method is indispensable for the development of the treatment of high-level liquid radioactive waste. It was found that Se can be extracted using phenylenediamine, Zr can be extracted using tetraoctyl diglycolamide and di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid, and Pd can be extracted using (methylimino)bis(dioctylacetamide) and hexaoctylnitrilotriacetamide. These elements can be recovered in over 90% yield by these extractants from nitric acid into OC. A distribution ratio of Cs of greater than 1 can be obtained using di-t-butyldibenzo-18-crown-6. It is clear that 90% recovery of Cs can be achieved using an extraction solvent with ten times the volume of the aqueous phase.

In this study, Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (U-RANS) approach with the Reynolds Stress Model using a commercial computational fluid dynamics code has been applied to the flow through single and double short-elbows under a high Reynolds number condition (1.010
). This numerical simulation has utilized a 1/7 scaled water experiment simulating the JSFR cold-leg piping in order to investigate the flow pattern in a three-dimensionally connected double elbow. As a result, validity and applicability of the U-RANS numerical simulation method were confirmed by comparison between the numerical and experimental results. The simulation has also shown that unsteady flow fields including vortex structures in the 1st elbow were very different from that in the 2nd elbow. This is because horseshoe vortexes generated in the 1st elbow downstream enter sideways the 2nd elbow. In addition, the simulation has indicated that the influence of distance between two elbows in the double elbow flow addressed in this paper was small.

Te, which causes major isobaric interference in the determination of
Sn content, along with highly radioactive coexisting elements using an anion-exchange column. The absence of counts attributed to Te in the Sn-containing effluent indicates that Te was completely removed. After washing, Sn retained on the column was readily eluted with 1 M HNO
. The isotope ratios of Sn were successfully determined and showed good agreement with those obtained through ORIGEN2 calculations. The results reported in this paper are the first experimental values of
Sn content in the spent nuclear fuel solution originating in spent nuclear fuel irradiated at a nuclear power plant in Japan.

The development of flow-induced vibration evaluation methodology has reached a milestone that separate-effect experimental data under a high Reynolds number regime including swirl and deflected inflow conditions are available for the validation of the methodology. On the other hand, technical standards are desirable to be documented for designers of sodium-cooled fast reactors. From such a background, the documentation of a flow-induced vibration design guideline has been made for the hot-leg piping of Japan sodium-cooled fast reactor. This paper describes the design guideline of the flow-induced vibration evaluation methodology, which has been informed from main separate-effect experiments, as well as supplemental interpretation for the guideline.

The present methodology was applied to the analysis for the 1/3-scale experiment of the hot-leg pipe of JSFR, and the predicted stress values were compared with the measured stress values. The predicted stress values were underestimated in the case of using the intact pressure fluctuations obtained by the unsteady fluid flow analysis. Therefore, the improvement of the prediction accuracy of the pressure fluctuations on the pipe wall was attempted.

Accurate inventory estimation of long-lived fission products (LLFPs) in LWR spent fuels is important for the quality management and for long-term safety assessment of high-level radioactive vitrified wastes. In Japan, ORIGEN2 has been widely used to estimate the fuel compositions. However, equipped library data in the original ORIGEN2 are old and are not validated enough for LLFPs, such as Se,
Tc,
Sn and
Cs, because available post irradiation examination (PIE) data are limited for these nuclides, which have difficulties in radiochemical analyses. For more accurate the estimation, new ORIGEN2 libraries are developed from the latest nuclear data library JENDL-4.0 for cross sections and fission yields, and from other libraries for half-lives, and so on. The new libraries are validated by PIE analyses of the sample fuels irradiated in Cooper, Calvert-Cliffs-1, H. B. Robinson-2, and Ohi-1. As a result, it was found that the new library gives good results for the estimation.

MVP-BURN with the latest nuclear data was applied to several post irradiation examinations including inventory measurements of Se,
Tc,
Sn and
Cs. One of them is a new measurement by JAEA. From the PIE analyses, it is found that the new PIE data obtained by JAEA is consistent with the other PIE data by different laboratory with different techniques. It is also confirmed that the present calculation results show good agreements with experimental ones within about 10% for productions of
Se and
Cs. In contrast, amounts of
Tc and
Sn are overestimated by about 50%. These discrepancies are likely due to the effect of insoluble residue produced during sample dissolution and/or errors of fission yields in the analyses.

Inventory estimation of long-lived fission products (LLFPs) in high-level radioactive wastes (HLW) from spent nuclear fuels of light water reactors is important for a safety assessment of their disposal. In order to develop an inventory estimation method of difficult-to-measure LLFPs (Se-79, Tc-99, Sn-126, and Cs-135), a parametric study was carried out by using a sophisticated burnup calculation code and data. In the parametric study, fuel specifications and irradiation conditions are changed in the conceivable range. The considered parameters are fuel assembly types (PWR / BWR), U-235 enrichment, moderator temperature, void fraction, power density, and so on. From the calculated results, we clarify the burnup characteristics of the target LLFPs and their possible ranges of generations. Finally, candidates of the key nuclide are proposed for the scaling factor method of HLW.

, we observed an appearance of a novel type of incommensurate ordering in magnetic fields. This ordering is essentially different from the N
el-type ordering, which is expected for the classical system, and the peculiar spin structure is caused by quantum fluctuation inherent in the quantum spin chain. A Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) nature characteristic of the gapless quantum 1D system is responsible for the realization of the incommensurate ordering.
