Opposing mixed convection heat transfer for turbulent single-phase flows

Convection, wherein forced and natural convections are prominent, is known as mixed convection. Specifically, when a forced convection flow is downward, this flow is called opposing flow. Several heat transfer correlations have been reported related to single-phase opposing flow; however, these correlations are based on experiments conducted in various channel geometries, working fluids, and thermal flow parameter ranges. Because the definition of nondimensional parameters and their validated range confirmed by experiments differ for each correlation reported in previous studies, establishing a guideline for deciding which correlation should be selected based on its range of applicability and extrapolation performance is important. This study reviewed the existing heat transfer correlations for turbulent opposing-flow mixed convection and the single-phase heat transfer correlations implemented in the thermal-hydraulic system codes. Furthermore, we evaluated the predictive performance of each correlation by comparing them with the experimental data obtained under various experimental conditions. The Jackson and Fewster, Churchill, and Swanson and Catton correlations (Int. J Heat Mass Transf., 1987) can accurately predict all the experimental data. The effect of the difference in the thermal boundary conditions, i.e., uniform heat flux and uniform wall temperature, on the turbulent mixed-convection heat transfer coefficient is not substantial. We confirmed that heat transfer correlations using the hydraulic-equivalent diameter as a characteristic length can be used for predictions regardless of channel-geometry differences. Furthermore, correlations described based on nondimensional dominant parameters can be used for predictions regardless of the differences in working fluids.

Radiological technologists have received specialized education about radiation and serve as risk communicators who aim to lessen patients' anxiety about radiation exposure, in addition to performing radiological examinations in routine clinical practice. Also, Radiological technologists across Japan were dispatched to the affected area to conduct an essential procedure-screening the belongings and body surfaces of evacuees for contamination at the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company in March 2011. In this study, we conducted a fact-finding survey on knowledge and awareness of radiation disasters among radiological technologists at National Hospital Organization facilities in Japan to reveal their literacy and competencies regarding radiation disasters. Also, we compared the knowledge and awareness of radiation disasters among Japanese radiological technologists between nuclear power station areas and non-nuclear power station areas and discuss ideal human resource development for radiological technologists to be ready to serve during a radiation disaster.

The axial U(1) anomaly in high-temperature QCD plays an important role to understand the phase diagram of QCD. The previous works by JLQCD Collaboration studied high-temperature QCD using 2-flavor dynamical chiral fermions such as the domain-wall fermion and reweighted overlap fermion. We extend our simulations to QCD with 2+1-flavor dynamical quarks, where the masses of the up, down, and strange quarks are near the physical point, and the temperatures are close to or higher than the pseudocritical temperature. In this talk, we will present the results for the Dirac spectrum, topological susceptibility, axial U(1) susceptibility, and hadronic collelators.

Liquid droplet entrainment by a high-speed gas jet is a key phenomenon for evaluation of sodium-water reaction. In this study, a visualization experiment for liquid droplet entrainment by an air jet in a water pool by using frame-straddling method was carried for development of an entrainment model in a sodium-water reaction analysis code. This experiment successfully provided clear images that captured generation and movement of droplets. Droplet diameter and moving speed were obtained at different locations and gas jet velocities from image processing. The measured data contributes phenomena elucidation and model development.

In order to provide the data for validation and improvement of the sodium-water reaction analysis code, a visualization experiment on liquid droplet entrainment in a high-pressure air jet submerged in a water pool was conducted. Diameter and velocity of entrained liquid droplets were successfully measured. The effect of a nozzle shape was elucidated.

We investigate the axial $$U(1)$$ anomaly of two-flavor QCD at temperatures 190-330 MeV. In order to preserve precise chiral symmetry on the lattice, we employ the M$"o$bius domain-wall fermion action as well as overlap fermion action implemented with a stochastic reweighting technique. Compared to our previous studies, we reduce the lattice spacing to 0.07 fm, simulate larger multiple volumes to estimate finite size effect, and take more than four quark mass points, including one below physical point to investigate the chiral limit. We measure the topological susceptibility, axial $$U(1)$$ susceptibility, and examine the degeneracy of $$U(1)$$ partners in meson/baryon correlators. All the data above the critical temperature indicate that the axial $$U(1)$$ violation is consistent with zero within statistical errors. The quark mass dependence suggests disappearance of the $$U(1)$$ anomaly at a rate comparable to that of the $$SU(2)_L times SU(2)_R$$ symmetry breaking.

High level liquid waste (HLLW) contains several radionuclides with half-lives longer than 10$$^{6}$$ year. For reduce environmental burden of waste disposal, minor actinoids and long-lived fission products will to be partitioned and transmuted. JAEA and Toshiba developed process for recovering Se, Zr, Pd and Cs from HLLW. Solvent extraction for Zr with novel extractant, ${it N,N}$-didodecyl-2-hydroxyacetoamide (HAA) was detailed. The HAA system showed high selectivity for Zr, as indicated by the extraction order of Zr $$>$$ Mo $$>$$ Pd $$>$$ Ag $$approx$$ Sb $$>$$ Sn $$>$$ Lns $$>$$ Fe. The extracted species was determined as Zr(HAA)$$_{3}$$(NO$$_{3}$$)$$_{4}$$(HNO$$_{3}$$)$$_{x}$$. A continuous countercurrent extraction with HAA was applied to a simulated, concentrated HLLW after Pd, Se, and Cs removal, where the quantitative extraction of Zr and Mo was effectively demonstrated.

The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

Sodium-cooled reactor (SFR) has superior characteristics thanks to sodium coolant features such as low pressure and high natural convection capability. Involving lessons learned from the 1F accident, requirements on design base DHRS have been modified. In that modification, safety requirements on design extended conditions have been clarified and sodium temperature criteria have been changed taking into account design margin even for design extended conditions. With the new DHRS configuration including ACS, designs of component cooling water system and emergency power supply have been updated.

The electron accelerator and the three $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities were operated for various research subjects according to the operation plan in FY 2013. The number of research subjects at the electron accelerator and at the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities kept constant from FY 2012. Among these research subjects, 47 and 91 ones respectively performed at the electron accelerator and the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities were relevant to recovery from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.

The electron accelerator and the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facility have been operated approximately smoothly. The annual operation time in FY 2013 for the electron accelerator, the first, the second cobalt irradiation facility and food irradiation facility are 1242 h, 18,900 h, 11,804 h and 6,587 h, respectively. Typically repairs were next ones. The SF$$_{6}$$ gas withdrawal system was renewed at the electron accelerator. The 600 m$$^{3}$$ water storage tank was installed to keep pool-water for the cobalt facilities maintenance. New pieces of $$^{60}$$Co sources were purchased and loaded to the first and the second irradiation facility. The maintenance check was done for the food irradiation facility.
