The nuclear half-life of U has been reported to vary depending on the chemical environment. In this study, both the half-life and the internal-conversion (IC) electron energy spectrum were measured for U with identical chemical environments for the first time. U oxide and fluoride samples were subjected to these measurements, and clear differences in the half-life and the energy spectrum between these samples were observed. The peaks in the energy spectra were identified with the relativistic density functional theory calculation, and the molecular orbital states of the U oxide and fluoride estimated from the energy spectra and the calculation qualitatively explained the difference in the half-lives between the samples.

A technique to utilize radioisotopes of Nb and Ta was developed for chemical studies of element 105, Db, by coupling a gas-jet transport system to the RIKEN gas-filled recoil ion separator (GARIS). The short-lived Nb and Ta were produced with nuclear reactions using a F beam whose energy was the same as that to produce Db. Then, they were separated with GARIS and extracted to a chemistry laboratory with the gas-jet transport system. By changing only magnetic field of GARIS and inserting an energy degrader and a shutter for recoil ions, we could deliver the Nb and Ta to a chemistry device for Db without changing other experimental conditions.

The neutron activation cross sections up to GeV are important for the neutron dosimetry of the radiation field in high-energy and high-intensity accelerator facilities for a project of intense spallation neutron source. But the evaluation of neutron activation cross section data is not enough above 20 MeV because experimental data are still scarce. This study aimed to measure the neutron activation cross sections of Bi and Co by using a quasi-monoenergetic neutron field. In this symposium, we will present obtained experimental cross section data with the other experimental data (neutron-induced and proton-induced), the calculated data by PHITS code and the evaluated nuclear data.

The reduction behavior of mendelevium (Md) was studied using a flow electrolytic chromatography apparatus. By applying appropriate potentials on the chromatography column, the more stable Md is reduced to Md. The reduction potential of the Md + e Md couple was determined to be -0.160.05 V vs. a normal hydrogen electrode.

Production cross sections of Rf isotopes in the Cm + O reaction were measured at the beam energy range of 88.2 to 101.3 MeV by use of a gas-filled recoil ion separator. The excitation functions of Rf, Rf, and Rf were obtained together with those of spontaneously fissioning nuclides which have few-second half-lives and have been assigned to Rf and a longer-lived state of Rf. The excitation function of few-second spontaneously fissioning nuclide exhibited the maximum cross section at the O beam energy of 94.8 MeV. The shape of the excitation function was almost the same as that of Rf, whereas it was quite different from those of Rf and Rf. A few-second spontaneously fissioning nuclide previously reported as Rf and Rf observed inCm + O reaction was identified as Rf.

Adsorption behavior of the group-5 elements, Nb and Ta, on cation-exchange resin was studied in mixed solution of HF and HNO as a model experiment of their heavier homologue, element 105 (dubnium, Db). Chemical reactions of these elements in the cation exchange rapidly reached the equilibrium. It was found that distribution coefficients of Nb and Ta decrease with increasing the fluoride ion concentration in the studied range of 10 - 10 M. Clear difference between Nb and Ta was observed in the variations of the distribution coefficients against the fluoride ion concentration. This would originate from their different chemical species of fluoride complexes. We propose the cation-exchange experiment of Db based on the present experimental results to understand its fluoride complex formation.

The spin-parity and neutron configuration of the ground state of No have been identified through -decay spectroscopy. The No is the nucleus with the largest neutron number whose spin-parities and single-particle configurations have ever been identified. The neutron 9/2 configuration was assigned to the ground state of No as well as to the 231.4 keV level in Fm. This allowed us to establish energy spacings and order of the neutron single-particle orbitals in such heaviest nuclear region. The appearance of the 9/2 ground state at =157 implies that the order of the neutron orbitals between the =152 and 162 deformed shell gaps should change considerably with increasing neutron number.

An isotope of the 113th element, 113, was produced in a nuclear reaction with a Zn beam on a Bi target. We observed six consecutive decays following the implantation of a heavy particle in nearly the same position in the semiconductor detector, in extremely low background condition. The fifth and sixth decays are fully consistent with the sequential decays of Db and Lr both in decay energies and decay times. This indicates that the present decay chain consisted of 113, Rg (Z = 111), Mt (Z = 109), Bh (Z = 107), Db (Z = 105), and Lr (Z = 103) with firm connections. This result, together with previously reported results from 2004 and 2007, conclusively leads the unambiguous production and identification of the isotope 113, of the 113th element.

Two isomeric states in Sg, i.e, Sg and Sg were produced in the Cm(Ne,5) reaction. Decay properties of Sg were investigated with a rotating-wheel apparatus for and spontaneous fission (SF) spectrometry under low background condition attained by a gas-jet transport system coupled to the RIKEN gas-filled recoil ion separator. Based on genetically correlated - (-) and -SF decay chains, 18 and 24 events were assigned to Sg and Sg, respectively. The half-life and -particle energy of Sg were measured to be s and MeV, respectively, and those of Sg were s and MeV.

Unexpected steep falloff of fusion cross sections has recently been observed in heavy-ion fusion reactions at deep sub-barrier energies. In this study the fusion-fission cross sections for F+Bi at sub-barrier energies were determined by a radiochemical method in order to study sub-barrier fusion hindrance. We will discuss the sub-barrier fusion hindrance in heavy-mass systems, comparing the theoretical calculations and the systematics.

The extraction behavior of rutherfordium (Rf) into trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) from 2.0 - 7.0 M HCl solution was studied together with that of the homologues Zr and Hf. The extracted yields of Rf, Zr, and Hf increased with an increase of HCl concentration, and the sequence of their extraction was Zr Hf Rf. It is suggested that the stability of the RfCl2(TOPO) complex is lower than that of the corresponding species of the homologues.

We report on the characteristic anion-exchange behavior of the superheavy element dubnium (Db) with atomic number Z = 105 in HF/HNO solution at the fluoride ion concentration [F] = 0.003 M. The result clearly demonstrates that the fluoro complex formation of Db is significantly different from that of the group-5 homologue Ta in the 6th period of the periodic table while the behavior of Db is similar to that of the lighter homologue Nb in the 5th period.

We report here on the successful oxidation of element 102, nobelium (No), on an atom-at-a-time scale in 0.1 M -hydroxyisobutyric acid (-HIB) solution using newly developed flow electrolytic column chromatography. It is found that the most stable No is oxidized to No within 3 min and that the oxidized No complex with -HIB holds the trivalent state in the column above the applied potential of 1.0 V.

Decay properties of an isotope Bh and its daughter nucleus Db produced by the Cm(Na,5) reaction were studied by using a gas-filled recoil separator coupled with a position-sensitive semiconductor detector. Bh was clearly identified from the correlation of the known nuclide, Db. The obtained decay properties of Bh and Db are consistent with those observed in the 113 chain, which provided further confirmation of the discovery of 113.

Anion-exchange behavior of the group-5 elements Nb and Ta, and their pseudo homologue Pa in HF and HF/HNO solutions was investigated by a batch method to find suitable conditions for the anion-exchange experiment of element 105 (Dubnium, Db). We determined distribution coefficients of those elements on the anion-exchange resin as a function of the F and NO concentrations. Clearly different anion-exchange behavior was observed among these elements. Based on the results, we discuss the fluoro-complex formation of each element and suggest experimental conditions for the study of fluoride complexation of Db.

Anion-exchange chromatography of element 105, dubnium (Db), produced in the Cm(F, 5n)Db reaction is investigated together with the homologues Nb and Ta, and the pseudo-homologue Pa in 13.9 M hydrofluoric acid (HF) solution. The distribution coefficient (K) of Db on an anion-exchange resin is successfully determined by running cycles of the 1702 chromatographic column separations. The result clearly indicates that the adsorption of Db on the resin is significantly different from that of the homologues and that the adsorption of anionic fluoro complexes of these elements decreases in the sequence of Ta Nb Db Pa.

We developed a new apparatus for the study of electrochemical properties of the heaviest elements. The apparatus is based on a flow electrolytic cell combined with column chromatography. Glassy-carbon fibers modified with Nafion perfluorinated cation-exchange resin are used as a working electrode as well as a cation-exchanger. The elution behavior of Ce with the number of 10 atoms in 0.1 M ammonium -hydroxyisobutyric acid solution from the column electrode was investigated at the applied potentials of 0.2 - 1.0 V versus the Ag/Agcl reference electrode in 1.0 M LiCl. It was found that Ce is successfully oxidized to Ce even with tracer concentration at around the redox potential determined by cyclic voltammetry for the macro amounts of Ce with 10 atoms (10 M). The present oxidation reaction and separation of Ce was accomplished within a few minutes.
