Concrete in a transuranic (TRU) waste repository is considered a suitable material to ensure safety, provide structural integrity and retard radionuclide migration after the waste containers fail. In the current study, coupling between chemical, mass-transport and mechanical, so-called non-linear processes that control concrete degradation and crack development were investigated by coupled numerical models. Application of such coupled numerical models allows identification of the dominant non-linear processes that will control long-term concrete degradation and crack development in a TRU waste repository.

A new biological weighting function (IBWF) is proposed to phenomenologically relate microdosimetric lineal energy probability density distributions with the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) for the in vitro clonogenic cell survival (survival fraction = 10%) of the most commonly used mammalian cell line, i.e. the Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts (V79). The RBE values assessed by the IBWF were found to be consistent and in good agreement with the ones calculated in combination with computer-simulated microdosimetric spectra, with an average relative deviation of 0.8% and 5.7% for H and C ions respectively.

Details are presented of the development of a coupled modeling simulator for assessing the evolution in the near-field of a geological repository for radioactive waste disposal where concrete is used as a backfill. The simulator uses OpenMI, a standard for exchanging data between simulation software programs at run-time, to form a coupled chemical-mechanical-hydrogeological model of the system. The approach combines a tunnel scale stress analysis finite element model, a discrete element model for accurately modeling the patterns of emerging cracks in the concrete, and a finite element and finite volume model of the chemical processes and alteration in the porous matrix and cracks in the concrete, to produce a fully coupled model of the system. Combining existing detailed simulation software in this way with OpenMI has the benefit of not relying on simplifications that might be necessary to combine all of the modeled processes in a single piece of software.

Experimental study on Cs chemisorption behaviour onto stainless steel at around 873 K

In order to acquire the knowledge of the Cs chemisorption behaviour in the lower temperature region, the Cs chemisorbed compounds and the surface reaction rates were investigated by conducting the Cs chemisorption tests onto stainless steel at 873 and 973 K. As a result, The cesium ferrate compounds were revealed to be formed at this temperatures. It was seen that the dependences of surface reaction rate constant on this temperature were different from that at the higher temperature region. This behaviour leads to the conclusion that the Cs chemisorption model in the low temperature region should be newly constructed.

The Japanese geological disposal programme for radioactive waste is based on a volunteering approach to siting, which places particular emphasis on the need for public acceptance. This emphasises the development of a repository project as a partnership with local communities and involves stakeholders in important decisions associated with key milestones in the selection of repository sites and subsequent construction, operation and closure. To date, however, repository concept development has proceeded in a more traditional manner, focusing particularly on ease of developing a post-closure safety case. In the current project, we have attempted to go further by assessing what requirements stakeholders would place on a repository and assessing how these could be used to re-think repository designs so that they meet the desires of the public without compromising critical operational or long-term safety.

A symposium "Science of nuclear fuel cycle and backend - Research and education -" was held at the Univer-sity of Tokyo in June 25, 2016. This aimed at developing the research on nuclear fuel cycle and backend. The time and the number of participants of the symposium were limited, but the active discussion was conducted, and the common perception for the future was shared among the experienced participants in those fields. This paper provides the discussions made in the symposium, and also, as a memory to Professor Ahn, the University of California, Berkeley, his prominent achievements in academic research and education.

To contribute the clarification of the Fukushima Daiichi Accident, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been performed experiments to obtain void fraction distribution data, including detailed bubble information such as bubble velocity and size, in steam-water two-phase flow in rod bundle geometry under high pressure and high temperature condition, focusing on low flow rate at the core natural circulation flow condition after the reactor scram. In this research, experimental apparatus for measuring void fraction distribution in the 4$$times$$4 rod bundle was constructed. To measure the void fraction distribution under high pressure and high temperature condition (up to 2.8 MPa, 232 $$^{circ}$$C), two wire mesh sensors (WMSs) were installed. To confirm the applicability of the installed WMSs and the measuring system for two-phase flow in rod bundle, experiments in air-water two-phase flow under atmospheric pressure and room temperature were performed. As a result, it was confirmed that the installed WMSs can be applicable to the two-phase flow in rod bundle. Measured results, such as instantaneous and time-averaged void fraction distribution in the rod bundle, average void fraction across the cross section of the flow channel, bubble length and velocity, were also reported.

In order to precisely investigate molten core relocation behavior in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, we have developed the detailed and phenomenological numerical simulation code named JUPITER for predicting the molten core behavior including solidification and relocation based on the three-dimensional multiphase thermal-hydraulic simulation models. At the moment, multicomponent analysis method which can be treated any number of component as a fluid or solid body, Zr-water reaction model and simple radiation heat transfer model were implemented and showed that multicomponent melt flow and its solidification were confirmed in the simplified core structure system. However, the validation of the JUPITER using high temperature molten material has not been performed yet. In this paper, in order to evaluate the validity of the JUPITER, especially, for high temperature melt relocation experiment, we compared between numerical and experimental results for that system. As a result, qualitatively reasonable result was obtained. And also we performed melt relocation simulation on actual core structures designed by three dimensional CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and then we estimated phenomena which might be actually occurred in SAs.

Measurement of void fraction distribution in steam-water two-phase flow in a 4$$times$$4 bundle at 2 MPa

To contribute to the clarification of the Fukushima Daiichi Accident, JAEA is working on getting instantaneous void fraction distribution data in steam water two - phase flow in rod bundle geometry under high pressure, high temperature condition, with using Wire Mesh Sensor (WMS) developed at JAEA for high pressure, high temperature condition, focusing on the low flow rate condition after the reactor scram. This paper reports the experimental results for the measured void fraction distribution in steam vapor two-phase flow in a 4 $$times$$ 4 bundle under 1.6 MPa (202 $$^{circ}$$C), 2.1 MPa (215 $$^{circ}$$C) and 2.6 MPa (226 $$^{circ}$$C) conditions. The data is expected to be used in the validation of the detailed two-phase flow codes TPFIT and ACE3D developed at JAEA. The time and space averaged void fraction data is also expected being used in the validation of the drift flux models implemented in the two fluids codes, such as TRACE code.

Conceptual design of in-vessel component including conducting shell has been investigated in Broader Approach (BA) DEMO design activities, in order to propose feasible DEMO reactor from plasma vertical stability and engineering viewpoint. The conducting shell for the plasma vertical stability will be incorporated behind blanket module, while the location must be close to the plasma surface as possible for the plasma stabilization. We evaluated dependence of the plasma vertical stability on the conducing shell parameters by using a 3-dimensional eddy current analysis code (EDDYCAL). The calculation results showed that the conducting shell requires more than 0.01 m thickness of Cu-alloy on DEMO. On the other hand, the electromagnetic force at the plasma disruption is a few times larger than no conducting shell case because of larger eddy current on conducting shell. The engineering design issues of in-vessel components for plasma vertical stability are presented.

The light transport properties of scintillator light inside alternative He-3 neutron detector modules using scintillator sheets have been investigated by a ray-tracing simulation code. The detector module consists of a light-reflecting tube, a thin rectangular ceramic scintillator sheet laminated on a glass plate, and two photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs) mounted at both ends of the detector tube. The light induced on the surface of the scintillator sheet via nuclear interaction between the scintillator and neutrons are detected by the two PMTs. The light output of various detector modules in which the scintillator sheets are installed with several different arrangements were examined and evaluated in comparison with experimental results. The results derived from the simulation reveal that the light transport property is strongly dependent on the arrangement of the scintillator sheet inside the tube and the shape of the tube.
