The Fukushima Accident was the first major nuclear accident in the age of social media, where information and communication created as much of an issue as radiation materials released by the accident. Japan Health Physics Society(JHPS) started a website "Hoshasen kurashi no Q&A" and called citizens to submit any questions and concerns on radiation in their daily lives. It aimed to provide accurate information about the radioactive materials released by the accident. Later, YRA-JHPS shared the experience with Institution of Professional Engineer of Japan (YEC-IPEJ) to review the role of experts and specialists in an emergency such as the Fukushima Accident. Collaborating with various specialists who bring in different viewpoints and expertise, we had in-depth discussion on how to improve risk-communication activities on radiation and radiation protection so as to utilize the lessons learned from the Fukushima Accident for a better and more effective risk communication in the future.
