The mesospheric ionization signature reached below 70 km altitude and continued for ~15 min until the substorm onset, as observed by the PANSY radar and imaging riometer at Syowa Station in the Antarctic region. We also used energetic electron flux observed by the Arase and POES 15 satellites as the input for the air-shower simulation code PHITS to quantitatively estimate the mesospheric ionization rate. Combining the cutting-edge observations and simulations, we shed new light on the space weather impact of the EEP events during geomagnetically quiet times, which is important to understand the possible link between the space environment and climate.

It has made a significant progress in space weather research and operational forecasts, publishing over 500 refereed journal papers and organizing four international symposiums, various workshops and seminars, and summer school for graduate students at Rikubetsu in 2017. This paper is a summary report of the PSTEP and describes the major research achievements it produced.

A general-purpose Monte Carlo particle transport code PHITS suggested that significant ionization is possible in the middle atmosphere due to auroral X-rays from the auroral electrons of 10 keV.

We report on the fabrication of fullerene nanowires that is universally applicable to its derivatives (pristine C, methanofullerenes of C and C, and indene C bis-adduct). Nanowires with radii of 811 nm were formed via a chain polymerization reaction induced by a high-energy ion beam. Fabrication of a poly(3-hexylthiophene): [6,6]-phenyl C butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic cell including PCBM nanowires with precisely-controlled length and density demonstrates how application of this methodology can improve the power conversion efficiency of these inverted cells.

Liquid-liquid extraction using chiral tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine ligands as an extractant exhibited high efficiency and selectivity for trivalent actinides. A combination of chiral ligand and 2-bromodecanoic acid further enhanced extraction performance for trivalent actinides.

Soft-donor extractants containing sulfur- or nitrogen-donor are applicable to the separation of trivalent actinides (An(III)) from lanthanides (Ln(III)) by solvent extraction method. We designed two ligand systems which are expected to efficiently separate An(III) from Ln(III). The one is "Oligo-pyridine" ligand containing multiple pyridine moieties. The other is "Chirality-controlled" ligand containing chiral centers in the ligand. We synthesized more than thirty ligands and found out the ability on the separation of An(III) from Ln(III). In this presentation, we will discuss about the comprehensive results on the separation ability of An(III) from Ln(III) by means of "Oligo-pyridine" and "Chirality-controlled" ligands, and the extraction equilibrium of An(III) with selected tripodal ligands in detail.

Systematic safety assessment should be carried out taking into account linkage among "Condition Setting", "Safety Function", and "Radionuclide Migration". We have summarized input-output relation among a calculation code coupled mass transport and chemical reaction, models to evaluate performance of each of engineered barriers, and a safety assessment code through the viewpoint of the linkage. As the first step to establish a systematic safety assessment methodology, how to specifically link those codes and models and how to apply a linked calculation process to practical cases of geological disposal conditions have been discussed.
