Change in corrosion potential of SUS304 in natural river water

In the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant, seawater and natural river water were poured for emergency cooling. Corrosion of materials was worried because of high chloride ion concentration from seawater. The chloride ion concentration was decreased by de-chlorination operation. However, the water was not treated in the viewpoint of microbial breeding, so that many microbes could be alive and microbially induced corrosion (MIC) was worried. So, we attempted to examine the ability of MIC occurrence by using of corrosion potential analysis. Corrosion potentials of samples rose to about 300 mV nobler than the initial values in the NB added solution. The potentials of the welded samples more easily rose than the simple plate. These potential changes are attributed to the biofilms formed on the sample surface. After about 100 days' immersion, evidence of localized corrosion was not observed. More immersion time is needed to clarify the MIC ability.

JAEA together with the Japan Nuclear Human Resource Development Network (JN-HRD Net), the University of Tokyo (UT) and the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) cohosted the IAEA-Nuclear Energy Management School in Tokai Village, aiming that Japan will be the center of nuclear HRD in the Asian region. In the school, not only lectures by IAEA experts, but also lectures by Japanese experts and technical visits were included for foreign participants. The school contributed to the internationalization of Japanese young professionals, development of nuclear human resource of other countries, and enhancement of cooperation between IAEA and Japan. Additionally, collaborative relationship within JN-HRD Net was strengthened by the school. In this report, findings obtained during the preparatory work and the school period are reported for future international nuclear HRD activities in Japan.

Mass production results of superconducting cables for CS and EF coils of JT-60SA

We have successfully manufactured all superconducting cables for CS and EF coils of JT-60SA. The low temperature performance of superconducting wires satisfied the specifications under sufficiently low deviations and high production yields. Ni-plated strands of EF cables having the larger sliding friction between strands than that of Cr-plated strands of CS cable caused difficulties on the cabling without any defects. Consequently, the newly developed cabling techniques with the original inspection apparatus significantly enhanced the manufacturability and were effective for guarantee of the quality.

JT-60SA vacuum vessel (VV) has the outer diameter of 10 m and the height of 6.6 m. The VV is supported by 9 legs. The material is 316L with low cobalt content of $$<$$0.05wt%. The VV has a double wall structure composed of inner/outer shells and ribs to ensure high rigidity at operational load and high toroidal one-turn resistance of $$sim$$16$$mu$$$$Omega$$ simultaneously. The double wall thicknesses are 194 mm at inboard and 242 mm at outboard. Inner/outer shells have 18-mm thicknesses. In the double wall, boric-acid water of $$sim$$50$$^{circ}$$C circulates at plasma operation to reduce nuclear heating of the superconducting coils. At the baking of 200$$^{circ}$$C, nitrogen gas circulates in the double wall. Fundamental welding R&D and a trial manufacturing of the 20$$^{circ}$$ upper half of the VV have been performed to study the manufacturing procedure. After the confirmation of the quality of the mock-up, manufacturing of the actual VV started in December 2009.

The real vacuum vessel (VV) manufacturing of JT-60SA has started since Nov. 2009 at Toshiba. Prior to starting manufacturing, fundamental welding R&Ds had been performed by three stages. In the first stage, primary tests for screening welding method were performed. In the second stage, the trial welding for 1m-long straight and curved double shell samples were conducted. The dependences of welding quality and distortion on the welding conditions, such as arc voltage and current, setting accuracy, welding sequence, the shape of grooves, etc. were measured. In addition, welding condition with low heat input was explored. In the last stage, fabrication sequence was confirmed and established by the trial manufacturing of the 20$$^{circ}$$ upper half mock-up. This poster presents the R&D results obtained in the first and second stages.

The Performance of the J-PARC high-pressure neutron diffractometer PLANET revealed by the commissioning

The PLANET is the world's first neutron beamline specialized for high-pressure and high-temperature experiments. The most characteristic feature is the capability to investigate the state of the matter at high-pressure and high-temperatures up to 20 GPa and 2000 K with the multi-anvil high-pressure apparatus. The construction was started in 2008, and the beamline was commissioned in the last spring. The performance revealed by the commissioning will be introduced. The resolution of the diffraction pattern ($$Delta$$d/d = 0.6%) was found to be almost equal to the designed value (0.5%). The elimination of the background from the sample surrounding materials, which is the most important feature of the high-pressure experiments, was found to be accomplished with the use of the severe incident collimator and radial receiving collimator system. The beamline is used by project members since this autumn and will be opened for general users in the next April.
