PLANET is a time-of-flight (ToF) neutron beamline dedicated to high-pressure and high-temperature experiments. The large six-axis multi-anvil high-pressure press designed for ToF neutron diffraction experiments enables routine data collection at high pressures and high temperatures up to 10 GPa and 2000 K, respectively. To obtain clean data, the beamline is equipped with the incident slits and receiving collimators to eliminate parasitic scattering from the high-pressure cell assembly. The high performance of the diffractometer for the resolution ($$Delta$$ $$d$$/$$d$$ $$sim$$ 0.6%) and the accessible $$d$$-spacing range (0.2-8.4 ${AA}$) together with low-parasitic scattering characteristics enables precise structure determination of crystals and liquids under high pressure and temperature conditions.

JAEA together with the Japan Nuclear Human Resource Development Network (JN-HRD Net), the University of Tokyo (UT) and the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) cohosted the IAEA-Nuclear Energy Management School in Tokai Village, aiming that Japan will be the center of nuclear HRD in the Asian region. In the school, not only lectures by IAEA experts, but also lectures by Japanese experts and technical visits were included for foreign participants. The school contributed to the internationalization of Japanese young professionals, development of nuclear human resource of other countries, and enhancement of cooperation between IAEA and Japan. Additionally, collaborative relationship within JN-HRD Net was strengthened by the school. In this report, findings obtained during the preparatory work and the school period are reported for future international nuclear HRD activities in Japan.

We investigate LiVS$$_{2}$$ and LiVSe$$_{2}$$ with a triangular lattice as itinerant analogues of LiVO$$_{2}$$ known for the formation of a valence-bond solid (VBS) state out of an S = 1 frustrated magnet. LiVS$$_{2}$$, which is located at the border between a metal and a correlated insulator, shows a first order transition from a paramagnetic metal to a VBS insulator at T$$_{c}$$ $$sim$$ 305 K upon cooling. The presence of a VBS state in the close vicinity of insulator-metal transition may suggest the importance of itinerancy in the formation of a VBS state. We argue that the high temperature metallic phase of LiVS$$_{2}$$ has a pseudogap, likely originating from the VBS fluctuation. LiVSe$$_{2}$$ was found to be a paramagnetic metal down to 2 K.

Equation of state of hexagonal boron nitride

Fuchizaki, Kazuhiro*; Nakamichi, Takeshi*; Saito, Hiroyuki; Katayama, Yoshinori

Solid State Communications, 148(9-10), p.390 - 394, 2008/09

Diffraction data from hexagonal boron nitride were measured through in situ synchrotron X-ray measurements under pressures and temperatures up to about 8GPa and 1000K, respectively. They were analyzed in the light of Birch Murnaghan's and Parsafar Mason's equations of state. The isothermal bulk moduli at ambient conditions obtained from these equations almost coincide. However, the value, about 20GPa, is appreciably smaller than the one reported previously. The X-ray diffraction patterns by which the current result is justified are presented. The possible origin of a large discrepancy in the values is discussed.

The excitation function of the $$^{8}$$Li($$alpha$$,n)$$^{11}$$B reaction was measured while identifying the final state event by event in the region of E$$_{rm{cm}}$$ = 0.7 - 2.6 MeV using a highly efficient detector system and a low-energy $$^8$$Li beam. The results are much improved both in statistics and precisions, and show smaller cross sections than those of previous measurements by a factor of more than 2 in the low-energy region of E$$_{rm{cm}}le$$ 1.5 MeV. A resonance-like structure is found at around E$$_{rm{cm}}$$ = 0.85 MeV.

A new type of three dimensional tracking and proportional gas counter has been developed. Adopting a gating-grid system, performance of the detector becomes stable under the injection rate of charged particles less than 4$$times$$10$$^4$$ pps. It is a useful detection system for astrophysical experiments using radioactive nuclear beams, since the efficiency is so high as 100 %.

A Broad-band RF buncher cavity using finemet cut cores for ion beams

Watanabe, Masao; Chiba, Yoshiaki*; Koseki, Tadashi*; Katayama, Takeshi*; Oshiro, Yukimitsu*; Watanabe, Shinichi*

Proceedings of 17th International Conference on Cyclotrons and Their Applications (CYCLOTRONS 2004) (CD-ROM), 3 Pages, 2005/00

A broad-band rf cavity as a buncher of ion beams has been developed. Operating frequencies of the cavity is between 18 and 45 MHz. The cavity was installed in the beam transport line of the Hi-ECR ion source system in CNS for the beam test. Beam structure of 30 MHz was successfully observed for 10 keV proton beam.

Macroscopic Separation of Dense Fluid Phase and Liquid Phase of Phosphorus

Structural transformation between two liquid structures of phosphorus that occurred at about 1 GPa and 1000$$^{circ}$$C was investigated by in-situ X-ray radiography. When the low-pressure liquid was compressed, dark and round objects appeared in the radiograph. X-ray diffraction measurements confirmed that these objects were the high-pressure liquid. The drops grew and eventually filled the sample space. Decompressing caused the reverse process. The macroscopic phase separation supported the view that it was a first-order liquid-liquid phase transition. X-ray absorption measurements revealed that the change in density at the transition is about 40 % of the density of the high-pressure liquid.
