Ultra-high temperature ring tensile tests were carried out to investigate the tensile behavior of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel claddings and wrapper materials under severe accident conditions; temperatures ranged from room temperature to 1400$$^{circ}$$C which is near the melting point of core materials. The experimental results showed that tensile strength of 9Cr-ODS steel claddings was highest in the core materials at the ultra-high temperatures between 900 and 1200$$^{circ}$$C, but that there was significant degradation in tensile strength of 9Cr-ODS steel claddings above 1200$$^{circ}$$C. This degradation was attributed to grain boundary sliding deformation with $$gamma$$/$$delta$$ transformation, which was associated with reduced ductility. On the other hand, tensile strength of recrystallized 12Cr-ODS and FeCrAl-ODS steel claddings retained its high value above 1200 $$^{circ}$$C unlike the other tested materials. Present study includes the result of "R&D of ODS ferritic steel fuel cladding for maintaining fuel integrity at the high temperature accident condition" entrusted to Hokkaido University by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT).

Proceedings of 2017 International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP 2017) (CD-ROM), 7 Pages, 2017/04

Tolerance of fast rector fuel elements to failure in the typical accident conditions was evaluated for the oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) ferritic steel claddings that are candidate of the cladding material for advanced fast reactors. The evaluation was based on the cladding creep damage, which was quantified by the cumulative damage fractions (CDFs). It was shown that the CDFs of the ODS ferritic steel cladding were substantially lower than the breach limit of 1.0 in the loss of flow and transient over power conditions until a passive reactor shutdown system operates.

Beam-loss monitoring signals of interlocked events at the J-PARC Linac

Hayashi, Naoki; Kato, Yuko; Miura, Akihiko; Futatsukawa, Kenta*; Miyao, Tomoaki*

Proceedings of 5th International Beam Instrumentation Conference (IBIC 2016) (Internet), p.368 - 371, 2017/03

It is important to understand why the beam loss occurs during user operation. It is understandable that the beam loss results from RF cavities failure. However, it would be still useful to study the beam loss detailed mechanism and to know which beam loss monitor (BLM) experiences the highest loss or is most sensitive. This may lead a reduction in the number of interlocked events and a more stable accelerator operation. The J-PARC Linac BLM has a simple data recorder that comprises multiple oscilloscopes. Although its functionality is limited, it can record events when an interlock is triggered. Of particular interest here are the events associated with only the BLM Machine Protection System (MPS). These may reveal hidden problems with the accelerator.

JAEA-Conf 2015-002, p.593 - 598, 2016/02

For safe and stable beam operation, a MLF general control system (GCS) consists of several subsystems such as an integral control, interlock, server, network, and timing distribution systems. Since the first beam injection in 2008, the GCS has operated stably without any serious troubles in comparison with upgrade of target devices for ramping up beam power and increment of user apparatuses year by year. In recent years, however, it has been improved significantly in view of sustainable long-term operation and maintenance. The monitor and operation system of the GCS has been upgraded by changing its framework software to improve potential flexibility in its maintenance. Its interlock system was also modified in accordance with the re-examination of the risk management system of J-PARC. This paper reports recent progress of the MLF-GCS.

Interlock system of beam line for beam current upgrade

Kawane, Yusuke*; Miura, Akihiko; Miyao, Tomoaki*; Hirano, Koichiro; Sugimura, Takashi*; Kato, Yuko; Sawabe, Yuki; Fukuda, Shimpei; Ouchi, Nobuo

Proceedings of 11th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.1288 - 1291, 2014/10

In the J-PARC Linac, because an upgrading of a beam current up to 50mA using an RF-driven ion source and a new RFQ Linac cavity is in progress, we have developed a new frontend equipments. In order to protect the scraper against 50 mA, we need to observe the temperature and to avoid the excess heat loading of the scraper surface and to count the irradiated beam particles. We also monitor the beam transmission between the upstream and downstream of the chopper cavity to check the chopping errors using the beam current monitors. We fabricated the interlock system for the temperature, irradiated particle numbers and beam transmission. And we tested them in the test stand with actual beam. This paper describes the interlock system and their test results.

Using a charge density analysis based on synchrotron radiation X-ray powder diffraction data, we found that the charge carriers only accumulated in the iron layer of the superconducting phase of LaFeAsO$$_{1-x}$$F$$_{x}$$ at low temperatures. Analysis of the electrostatic potential distribution revealed the concerted enhancement of the electronic polarization of the As ions and the carrier redistribution.

We have performed soft X-ray emission spectroscopy (SXES) and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (SXAS) experiments on aluminum hydride $${alpha}$$-AlH$$_{3}$$. The occupied and unoccupied electronic states of the Al 3$$p$$ partial density of states are obtained experimentally. By comparing the data from Al metal and $${alpha}$$-AlH$$_{3}$$, a band gap with a few eV is found for $${alpha}$$-AlH$$_{3}$$. In addition, the occupied states of $${alpha}$$-AlH$$_{3}$$ have a larger spectral intensity than that of Al metal, indicating an increase in the number of electrons with the Al 3$$p$$ character through Al-H bond formations. The results of a band-structure calculation account for the formation of the energy gap and the increase of the Al 3$$p$$ electrons qualitatively. This suggests that a covalent-like nature is important to the Al-H bond in $${alpha}$$-AlH$$_{3}$$.

Photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and O $$1s$$ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements have been performed for Cd$$_2$$ Re$$_2$$ O$$_7$$ single crystals. Temperature variations of their spectra reveal that the phase transition at 120 K directly changes the band structure near the Fermi level compared with another transition near 200 K. The roles of the transitions are discussed in terms of the changes in the Re-O orbital hybridization.
