In the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, the purpose of the 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) is to accelerate a 1 MW, high-intensity proton beam. To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

We have upgraded a 3-MeV linac at J-PARC. The ion source is same as the J-PARC linac's, and the old 30-mA RFQ is replaced by a spare 50-mA RFQ, therefore, the beam energy is 3 MeV and the nominal beam current is 50 mA. The main purpose of this system is to test the spare RFQ, but also used for testing of various components required in order to keep the stable operation of the J-PARC accelerator. The accelerator has been already commissioned, and measurement programs have been started. In this paper, present status of this 3-MeV linac is presented.

Beam-loss monitoring signals of interlocked events at the J-PARC Linac

Hayashi, Naoki; Kato, Yuko; Miura, Akihiko; Futatsukawa, Kenta*; Miyao, Tomoaki*

Proceedings of 5th International Beam Instrumentation Conference (IBIC 2016) (Internet), p.368 - 371, 2017/03

It is important to understand why the beam loss occurs during user operation. It is understandable that the beam loss results from RF cavities failure. However, it would be still useful to study the beam loss detailed mechanism and to know which beam loss monitor (BLM) experiences the highest loss or is most sensitive. This may lead a reduction in the number of interlocked events and a more stable accelerator operation. The J-PARC Linac BLM has a simple data recorder that comprises multiple oscilloscopes. Although its functionality is limited, it can record events when an interlock is triggered. Of particular interest here are the events associated with only the BLM Machine Protection System (MPS). These may reveal hidden problems with the accelerator.

JAEA-Conf 2015-002, p.593 - 598, 2016/02

For safe and stable beam operation, a MLF general control system (GCS) consists of several subsystems such as an integral control, interlock, server, network, and timing distribution systems. Since the first beam injection in 2008, the GCS has operated stably without any serious troubles in comparison with upgrade of target devices for ramping up beam power and increment of user apparatuses year by year. In recent years, however, it has been improved significantly in view of sustainable long-term operation and maintenance. The monitor and operation system of the GCS has been upgraded by changing its framework software to improve potential flexibility in its maintenance. Its interlock system was also modified in accordance with the re-examination of the risk management system of J-PARC. This paper reports recent progress of the MLF-GCS.

J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) consists of much equipment. In Linac and 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron ring (RCS), the data of over the 64,000 EPICS records for these equipment has been collected. The Data volume will be about 10 TB in 2020. The data have been being stored by a Relational Data Base (RDB) system using PostgreSQL, but it is not enough in availability, performance, and capability to increase of data volume flexibility. Hadoop/HBase, which is known as a distributed, scalable and big data store, has been proposed for our next-generation archive system to solve these problems. The archiving system was built and verified about data transition or database utilization. This report shows the result of the modification of the archive system.

Proceedings of 12th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.1312 - 1316, 2015/09

The Linac and the RCS in J-PARC provide enormous operation data and we have been stored them into PostgreSQL. We are planning to replace it with HBase, a data store specialized for big-data and is on a distributed file system provided by Hadoop, using a cluster with advantages including automatically recovering and easily extending the capacity. In the previous presentation we reported we updated HBase/Hadoop in our test system and we showed issues to fix our tools in the new system, while we also mentioned issues about the construction of our cluster itself. In this presentation we are reporting we have re-designed and re-constructed the cluster with resolving the issues, including enhancing hardware of master nodes, creating automatic scripts to construct nodes, and introducing monitoring tools for nodes. Having accordingly adjusted the configurations of HBase/Hadoop and measured the performance of our new system, we are also reporting its results and considerations.

The core management and operation code system aims to perform core management task efficiently by systematic management of data, analyses and edits, which are needed in the reactor core management and operation. The system consists of the five calculation modules: the reactor constant generation module, the neutronic-thermal calculation module, the radiation analysis module, the core structural integrity estimation module, and the core operation analysis module. In these modules, the neutronic-thermal calculation module is based on the dedicated three-dimensional diffusion and burn-up code HIZER. HIZER can execute core calculations easily for specific design specification and operation patterns of Monju, enabling efficient and accurate evaluation of the Monju core characteristics. This report describes its calculation method and validation results.

Proceedings of 11th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.1288 - 1291, 2014/10

In the J-PARC Linac, because an upgrading of a beam current up to 50mA using an RF-driven ion source and a new RFQ Linac cavity is in progress, we have developed a new frontend equipments. In order to protect the scraper against 50 mA, we need to observe the temperature and to avoid the excess heat loading of the scraper surface and to count the irradiated beam particles. We also monitor the beam transmission between the upstream and downstream of the chopper cavity to check the chopping errors using the beam current monitors. We fabricated the interlock system for the temperature, irradiated particle numbers and beam transmission. And we tested them in the test stand with actual beam. This paper describes the interlock system and their test results.

Proceedings of 11th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.771 - 774, 2014/10

The radiation leak accident happened in the hadron experimental hall of J-PARC on May 23, 2013. The accident was caused by a target sublimation due to an unanticipated beam from the 50 GeV main ring (MR). To detect and prevent the radiation leakage in all facilities of J-PARC, we improve the machine protection system (MPS). In the J-PARC 3GeV synchrotron (Rapid Cycling Synchrotron, RCS), a monitoring system of an abnormal state of the extraction beam to the mercury target of material life science experiment facility (MLF) were prepared. The radiation level of the gas in the tunnel were able to always observed by connecting radiation safety system and accelerator control system. The dump temperature was included in the MPS. We also developed new interlock system that can stop the beam immediately when the beam current exceed the limit.

Proceedings of 10th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.731 - 734, 2014/06

The data acquisition in J-PARC LINAC/RCS are two methods of data archiving of polling data via EPICS Channel Access and synchronized waveform data. The synchronized waveform data are collected by several Wave Endless Recorders (WER). The WER counts the trigger number and holds waveform data in a ring buffer memory. We developed a Trigger Counter in order to manage the trigger number of each WER and synchronize the trigger number of each WER via LAN. At present, in order to install the waveform data synchronization system, we carried out verification using the timing test bench. This report presents about the waveform data synchronization system and future plan of the data acquisition system.

JAEA-Technology-2013-018.pdf:3.73MB

The prototype fast breeder reactor MONJU resumed the system startup test (SST) on May 6th 2010 after fourteen years and five months shutdown since the sodium leakage of the secondary heat transport system in December 1995 and reached criticality on May 8th. Core confirmation test (CCT) is the first step of SST which consists of three steps, and finished on July 22nd after 78 days test. Control rod reactivity worth measurements were carried out in order to calibrate the reactivity worth of control rods and back-up rods. In addition, we also aimed at a basic data acquisition for the control rod reactivity worth calibration.
