Proceedings of 2016 ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference (PVP 2016) (Internet), 10 Pages, 2016/07

Half-scale thick rubber bearing to investigate ultimate properties application for a Sodium-cooled-Fast-Reactor. The fundamental restoring-force characteristics of the thick rubber bearings has been already cleared through the static loading tests using a half-scale thick rubber bearing, 800 mm in diameter. However, variations of the restoring force characteristics and ultimate properties have not been obtained yet. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the variation of the stiffness and damping ratio concerning restoring force characteristics and the breaking strain or stress as ultimate properties through static loading tests using the half-scale thick rubber bearings.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is procuring all amounts of Nb$$_3$$Sn conductors for Central Solenoid (CS) in the ITER project. Before start of mass-productions, the conductor should be tested to confirm superconducting performance in the SULTAN facility, Switzerland. The original design of cabling twist pitches is 45-85-145-250-450 mm, called normal twist pitch (NTP). The test results of the conductors with NTP was that current shearing temperature (Tcs) is decreasing due to electro-magnetic (EM) load cycles. On the other hand, the results of the conductors with short twist pitches (STP) of 25-45-80-150-450 mm show that the Tcs is stabilized during EM load cyclic tests. Because the conductors with STP have smaller void fraction, higher compaction ratio during cabling is required and possibility of damage on strands increases. The technology for the cables with STP was developed in Japanese cabling suppliers. The several key technologies will be described in this paper.

In order to establish the technique fabricating a thin target slab with a real size, thin tantalum-clad tungsten slab with a hole for a thermocouple was fabricated with the high-precision machinery techniques and the HIP'ing method. The ultrasonic diagnostic showed that tantalum and tungsten bond was perfect. The HIP optimum condition was certified by means of the small punch test as already reported. The electrolytic coating technique in a molten salt was developed to make a thinner tantalum cladding on a tungsten target with a complicated shape, in order to reduce radioactivity from tantalum in an irradiated target.

Development of the Nb$$_{3}$$Al D-shaped coil fabricated by react-and-wind method for JT-60 superconducting Tokamak

Kizu, Kaname; Miura, Yushi; Tsuchiya, Katsuhiko; Koizumi, Norikiyo; Matsui, Kunihiro; Ando, Toshinari*; Hamada, Kazuya; Hara, Eiji*; Imahashi, Koichi*; Ishida, Shinichi; et al.

Proceedings of 6th European Conference on Applied Superconductivity (EUCAS 2003), p.400 - 407, 2003/00

Toroidal field coils (TFC) of the JT-60SC consist of 18 D-shape coils. The maximum magnetic field is 7.4 T at an operational current of 19.4 kA. An advanced Nb$$_{3}$$Al superconductor was developed for the TFC conductor material in JAERI. The Nb$$_{3}$$Al has lower strain sensitivity on superconducting performances, and allows us to fabricate the TFC by react-and-wind (R&W) method that makes that the coil fabrication with high reliability becomes easier and the fabrication cost becomes lower. To demonstrate the coil fabrication by R&W method, a two-turn D-shape coil was developed. The D-shape coil was tested at 4.3-4.4K and 7-12T. Measured critical current (Ic) was 30 kA at 7.3 T and 4.4 K. Using the measured conductor and strand Ic values, the strain of the conductor was estimated to be -0.6%. The Ic-B-T characteristic expected by an empirical equation substituting this strain shows that the required temperature margin for TFC is satisfied. Thus, the R&W method was demonstrated to be the applicable fabrication method of the TFC.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is procuring all amounts of Nb$$_{3}$$Sn conductors for Central Solenoid (CS) in the ITER project. Before start of mass-productions, the conductor should be tested to confirm superconducting performance in the SULTAN facility, Switzerland. The cable with a shorter twist pitch shows no degradation of Tcs against to electromagnetic load cycles. However, it is difficult to make the cable, because the diameter of the cable with shorter twist pitch is larger and the cable has to compact more. The technology for the cables with STP was developed in Japanese cabling suppliers. The several key technologies and production will be described in this paper.

JAEA is procuring conductors for ITER Central Solenoid (CS) and has evaluated its superconducting performance using CS Model Coil Test facility. We measured Tcs values during cyclic charge of 16,000 cycles and warm-up and cool-down cycle of 3 times. And we measured effect of coil deformation by electro-magnetic force on Tcs values and performed quench test. In this presentation, test method will be reported.

The examination concerning the liquidity improvement of the MOX powder was done by using easy equipment on the scale of 300g/batch until 2006. 300g/batch scale equipment was destroyed, and the maintenance made the test equipment of 600g/Batch was done until 2008. Small-scale test equipment began in 2009 the trial run, and began the plutonium examination in the latter half. The best granulation condition that was able to be improved to the powder fluidity that met MOX powdery specification was able to be found from the result of these examinations.
