Development of MA separation process with TEHDGA/SiO$$_{2}$$-P for an advanced reprocessing

Applicability of tetra2-ehylhexyl diglycolamide (TEHDGA) impregnated adsorbent for minor actinide (MA) recovery from high level liquid waste (HLLW) in extraction chromatography technology was investigated through batch-wise adsorption and column separation experiments. Distribution ratio of representative fission product elements were obtained by the batch-wise experiments, and TEHDGA adsorbent was shown to be preferable to TODGA adsorbent for decontamination of several species. All Ln(III) supplied into the TEHDGA adsorbent packed column was properly eluted from the column, and the applicability of the adsorbent was successfully showed by this study.

${it N,N,N',N'}$-(tetrakis-2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine (TPEN) derivatives bearing a polymerizable double bond in the substituent structure of the pyridine ring are synthesized and subjected to copolymerization with ${it N}$-isopropylacrylamide in the presence of AIBN. The obtained poly(TPEN-NIPA) gels show thermo-responsive swelling/shrinking behaviors and are employed for the extraction of cadmium(II) ion from the aqueous solution to examine the relationship of the gel characteristics and the extraction performance. The polymer gels composed of the TPEN derivative bearing C3, C4, C10 and branched C3 spacer chains are synthesized and temperature-dependent extraction behavior of cadmium ion is compared. These gels extract Cd(II) ion efficiently from the aqueous solution in the swelling state at 5$$^{circ}$$C, while little extraction is observed at 45$$^{circ}$$C with shrinking. It is found that poly(TPEN-NIPA) gel of branched C3 spacer (C3b) shows the excellent thermoresponsive extraction performance.

The obtained poly(TPEN-NIPA)gels show thermo-responsive swelling/shrinking behaviors and are employed for the extraction of cadmium(II) ion from the aqueous solution to examine the relationship of the gel characteristics and the extraction performance. The polymer gels composed of the TPEN derivative bearing three or four double bonds exhibit temperature-dependent change of swelling and shrinking in water. These gels extract CdII ion efficiently from the aqueous solution in the swelling state at 5$$^{circ}$$C, while little extraction was observed at 45$$^{circ}$$C with shrinking.

The shrinking kinetics of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) gels has been studied for two types of PNIPA gels prepared by (i) copolymerization of constituent monomer and cross-linker and (ii) $$gamma$$-ray irradiation in the PNIPA solutions in order to investigate the role of cross-linking on shrinking kinetics. The shrinking kinetics of the monomer cross-linked gels is quite similar to that of the polymer cross-linked gels. On the other hand, a significant difference was found when the microscopic structure and the dynamics were investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and static/dynamic light scattering (SLS/DLS). The degree of built-in inhomogeneities and dynamic fluctuations were evaluated as a function of the cross-linking degree and the gel preparation temperature by intensity decomposition methods for both types of gels. It is concluded that the monomer cross-linked gels have extra built-in inhomogeneities due to the spatial distribution of crosslinks in addition to the frozen concentration fluctuations inherent in polymer gels.

Syntheses and properties of TPEN derivatives bearing hydrophobic side-chains as separating agent for minor actinides from high-level radioactive waste

Separation of minor actinides (MAs) from lanthanides in high-level radioactive waste (HLW) becomes important in nuclear power generation. Although TPEN is a possible candidate for the practical separating agent for MAs from HLW, there still remains difficulties in high water solubility and easy protonation characteristics. The practical MA separation is conducted from a mixture of MAs and Ln(III) in a highly acidic aqueous solution, thereby a hydrophobic and acid tolerant chelating agent needs to be developed. We herein report efficient syntheses of TPEN derivatives bearing various hydrophobic side-chains, which are alkyloxy and fluorinated alkoxy groups, and solvent extraction of Am(III) from Eu(III) in nitric acid aqueous solution. Synthesized TPEN derivatives were hydrophobic and showed higher performance than unsubstituted TPEN for Am separation from Eu in extraction with water/organic solvents at low pH region.
