To replay the demand from the sites of radiation emergency medicine, we developed a prototype of a computer system for assessing radioactive contamination accidentally remained in the wound or on the skin surface. This system implements numerical calibration of detectors measuring the contaminant by using a Monte Carlo simulation-based radiation transport code, MCNPX coupled to a numerical phantom modeling the contaminants and the surrounding tissue. By the help of functional graphical user interfaces (GUIs) provided by the system, a user can perform desired simulations without complicated procedures in creating input files for MCNPX. In the present work, benchmark calculations of MCNPX were conducted to verify the simulations, and we optimized detection-related parameters not sufficiently provided by suppliers. The developed system would be useful for better assessments of the radioactive contamination.

Verification of atmospheric diffusion models using data of long term atmospheric diffusion experiments

The plume models are used in probabilistic accident consequence assessment (PCA) codes due to cost and time savings. The PCA code, OSCAAR developed by JAERI (Present; JAEA) uses the puff model to calculate atmospheric transport and dispersion. In order to investigate uncertainties involved with the structure of the atmospheric dispersion/deposition model in OSCAAR, we have introduced the more sophisticated computer codes that included regional meteorological model RAMS and atmospheric transport model HYPACT, and comparative analyses between OSCAAR and RAMS/HYPACT have been performed. In this study, model verification of OSCAAR and RAMS/HYPACT was conducted using data of long term atmospheric diffusion experiments, which were carried out in Tokai-mura, Ibaraki-ken. The predictions by models and the results of the atmospheric diffusion experiments indicated relatively good agreements. And it was shown that model performance of OSCAAR was the same degree as it of RAMS/HYPACT.

Advection and dispersion analysis of radon and its progenies in the East Asian region, and the relation with the winter thunderstorm activity

Journal of Atmospheric Electricity, 27(1), p.53 - 59, 2007/00

A transport model of radon and its progeny nuclides for the Asian region was developed based on RAMS and HYPACT models to determine the mechanism for occurrences of lightning during the winter season in the coastal areas of the Sea of Japan. Using this model, radon dispersion from September 2002 to October 2003 was evaluated. The analyzed concentration distribution clarifies that seasonal winds carry a large amount of radon from the Asian continent to the coastal area of the Sea of Japan. A large concentration of the continent-originated radon stays in the area between the ground and the altitude of 3 km msl. This result suggests that the region with strong electric field in winter thunderclouds is filled with a large concentration of radon. Furthermore, it suggests that beta and $$gamma$$ rays emitted by radon progenies cause electromagnetic showers in that region.

To evaluate the influence to which radon and its decay products cause the thunderstorm activity, a large area diffusion model of radon is constructed for an Australian northern part that is one of the most frequent region of the thunderstorm in the world. The advection and diffusion analysis of radon in the atmosphere was carried out, and it compared it with the measured result of the radon concentration in the region from the dry season to the rainy season.

A long-range model for advective diffusion of radon and its progeny products transported from the Asian continent was developed to investigate the effect of atmospheric radioactive substances to the winter thunderstorm. This system is based on regional meteorological model RAMS4.4 and material transport model HYPACT1.2. Using this system, a simulation was performed from October, 2002 to September, 2003. The annual fluctuation and advection from the continent were also studied.
