The layered perovskite PrBaCo$$_{2}$$O$$_{5.5}$$ demonstrates a strong negative thermal expansion (NTE) which holds potential for being fabricated into composites with zero thermal expansion. The NTE was found to be intimately associated with the spontaneous magnetic ordering, known as magneto-volume effect (MVE). Here we report with compelling evidences that the continuous-like MVE in PrBaCo$$_{2}$$O$$_{5.5}$$ is intrinsically of discontinuous character, originating from an magnetoelectric transition from an antiferromagnetic insulating large-volume (AFILV) phase to a ferromagnetic less-insulating small-volume (FLISV) phase. Furthermore, the magnetoelectric effect (ME) shows high sensitivity to multiple external stimuli such as temperature, carrier doping, hydrostatic pressure, magnetic field etc. In contrast to the well-known ME such as colossal magnetoresistance and multi-ferroic effect which involve symmetry breaking of crystal structure, the ME in the cobaltite is purely isostructural. Our discovery provides a new path way to realizing the ME as well as the NTE, which may find applications in new techniques.

Refrigeration is of vital importance for modern society for example, for food storage and air conditioning- and 25 to 30% of the world's electricity is consumed for refrigeration. Current refrigeration technology mostly involves the conventional vapour compression cycle, but the materials used in this technology are of growing environmental concern because of their large global warming potential. As a promising alternative, refrigeration technologies based on solid-state caloric effects have been attracting attention in recent decades. However, their application is restricted by the limited performance of current caloric materials, owing to small isothermal entropy changes and large driving magnetic fields. Here we report colossal barocaloric effects (CBCEs) (barocaloric effects are cooling effects of pressure-induced phase transitions) in a class of disordered solids called plastic crystals. The obtained entropy changes in a representative plastic crystal, neopentylglycol, are about 389 joules per kilogram per kelvin near room temperature. Pressure-dependent neutron scattering measurements reveal that CBCEs in plastic crystals can be attributed to the combination of extensive molecular orientational disorder, giant compressibility and highly anharmonic lattice dynamics of these materials. Our study establishes the microscopic mechanism of CBCEs in plastic crystals and paves the way to next-generation solid-state refrigeration technologies.

If subsurface flaws are detected that are close to component free surfaces, flaw-to-surface proximity rule is used to determine whether the flaws should be treated as subsurface flaws as is, or transformed to surface flaws. However, specific factors for the proximity rules on transforming subsurface to surface flaws differ among fitness-for-service codes. The objective of the paper is to reveal the proximity factor from the stress intensity factor interaction between the subsurface flaw and the free surface.

Power and particle control in fusion reactor is quite a challenge and we have studied the negative triangularity tokamak (NTT) as an innovative concept to reduce the transient ELM heat load and the quasi steady-state heat load. A double-null NTT is stable to ideal MHD modes for a reactor relevant bN $$>$$ 3 while it is a magnetic hill configuration. In this paper, we report the configuration study of single-null NTT and its ideal MHD stability.

Effects of Co substitution on the magnetic excitation in heavy fermion compound PrFe$$_{4}$$P$$_{12}$$

We performed measurements of specific heat and inelastic neutron scattering on Pr(Fe$$_{1-x}$$Co$$_{x}$$)$$_{4}$$P$$_{12}$$ to investigate the effects of d-electron doping on the heavy fermion (HF) state and non-magnetic order state of PrFe$$_{4}$$P$$_{12}$$. The ordered state is suppressed by the Co substitution. A Schottky type behavior in the specific eat appears at 8 K, in contrast with the undoped system. The inelastic neutron spectrum of the Co substituted system is composed of several sharp inelastic peaks, in contrast with the quasi-lastic spectrum in the HF phase of PrFe$$_{4}$$P$$_{12}$$. The experimental results indicate that the Co substitution induces localized 4f electrons of Pr ions with suppression of the HF state and the exotic ordering.

Tensile mechanical properties of a stainless steel irradiated up to 19 dpa in the Swiss spallation neutron source

To evaluate the lifetime of the beam window of an accelerator-driven transmutation system (ADS), post irradiation examination (PIE) of the STIP (SINQ target irradiation program, SINQ; Swiss spallation neutron source) specimens was carried out. The specimens tested in this study were made from the austenitic steel JPCA (Japan primary candidate alloy). The specimens were irradiated at SINQ Target 4 (STIP-II) with high-energy protons and spallation neutrons. The irradiation conditions were as follows: the proton energy was 580 MeV, irradiation temperatures ranged from 100 to 430$$^{circ}$$C, and displacement damage levels ranged from 7.1 to 19.5 dpa. Tensile tests were performed in air at room temperature (R.T.), 250$$^{circ}$$C and 350$$^{circ}$$C. Fracture surface observation after the tests was done by SEM (Scanning electron microscope). Results of the tensile tests performed at R.T. showed the extra hardening of JPCA at higher dose compared to the fission neutron irradiated data. At the higher temperatures, 250$$^{circ}$$C and 350$$^{circ}$$C, the extra hardening was not observed. Degradation of ductility bottomed around 10 dpa, and specimens kept their ductility until 19.5 dpa. All specimens fractured in ductile manner. The result from a microstructure observation on a specimen irradiated to 19.3 dpa at 420$$^{circ}$$C indicates that some agglomeration of bubbles on grain boundaries was observed in the specimen irradiated to 19.3 dpa at 420$$^{circ}$$C. However the tensile specimen irradiated up to 18.4 dpa at 425$$^{circ}$$C still exhibited little loss of ductility. Since He/dpa was very high on SINQ target irradiations, the formation of highly dense small bubbles in the matrix consequently avoided the accumulation of He on grain boundaries, which might have resulted in avoiding grain boundary embrittlement.

An advanced reprocessing system for spent FBR fuels based on two precipitation processes using pyrrolidone derivatives as precipitants has been developed. Experimental results of precipitation behavior of U, Pu and other elements, the heat- and radiation-resistance of precipitants, the thermal decomposition properties of precipitates showed that N-n-butyl-2-pyrrolidone and N-neopentyl-2-pyrrolidone are the appropriate precipitants for the first and second precipitation steps, respectively. From the engineering investigation, We confirmed that the precipitation and the filtration can be done efficiently using the engineering scale equipment and that the fuel pellets are directly prepared by the calcination of the precipitates. On the basis of these results, we evaluated that the proposed system is expected to be one of candidates of the future reprocessing systems for spent FBR fuels.

We report on the event structure and double helicity asymmetry ($$A_{LL}$$) of jet production in longitudinally polarized $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. Photons and charged particles were measured by the PHENIX experiment. Event structure was compared with the results from PYTHIA event generator. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation. We measured $$A_{LL}$$ = -0.0014 $$pm$$ 0.0037 at the lowest $$P_T$$ bin and -0.0181 $$pm$$ 0.0282 at the highest $$P_T$$ bin. The measured $$A_{LL}$$ is compared with the predictions that assume various $$Delta G(x)$$ distributions.

This paper studies the master curve to estimate the crack length when a postulated initial crack unexpectedly grows and penetrates the pipe thickness. In order to obtain the fatigue crack and creep crack growth characteristics of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel pipes, fatigue crack and creep crack growth tests were conducted using compact tension (CT) specimens and crack growth rates for both fatigue and creep at elevated temperature were obtained. Based on the obtained material characteristics and the results of a series of crack growth calculations, a relationship between the penetrated crack length and the ratio of membrane to total stress, so called as master curve, was proposed. In this study, master curves were proposed for pipes made of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel as a function of pipe geometry, i.e. the ratio of radius to thickness.

This paper describes the improved COD assessment method and verifies the validity of the method based on the results of a series of four-point bending tests at elevated temperature using thin wall modified 9Cr-1Mo steel pipe containing a circumferential through wall crack. As a result, COD values calculated by the proposed method were in a good agreement with the experimental results for the uniform pipe without weld. In the case that the crack was machined at weld metal or heat affected zone (HAZ), proposed method predicted relatively larger COD than the experimental results. The causes of such discrepancies were discussed comparing with the results of finite element analyses. Based on these examinations, the rational leak rate evaluation method in LBB assessment was proposed.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.
