Gamma decays were observed in $$^{56}$$Ca and $$^{58}$$Ca following quasi-free one-proton knockout reactions from $$^{57,59}$$Sc. For $$^{56}$$Ca, a $$gamma$$ ray transition was measured to be 1456(12) keV, while for $$^{58}$$Ca an indication for a transition was observed at 1115(34) keV. Both transitions were tentatively assigned as the $$2^{+}_{1} rightarrow 0^{+}_{gs}$$ decays. A shell-model calculation in a wide model space with a marginally modified effective nucleon-nucleon interaction depicts excellent agreement with experiment for $$2^{+}_{1}$$ level energies, two-neutron separation energies, and reaction cross sections, corroborating the formation of a new nuclear shell above the N = 34 shell. Its constituents, the $$0_{f5/2}$$ and $$0_{g9/2}$$ orbitals, are almost degenerate. This degeneracy precludes the possibility for a doubly magic $$^{60}$$Ca and potentially drives the dripline of Ca isotopes to $$^{70}$$Ca or even beyond.

Proceedings of 31st International Linear Accelerator Conference (LINAC 2022) (Internet), p.636 - 641, 2022/09

The muon linac project for the precise measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments, which is currently one of the hottest issues of the elementary particle physics, is in progress at J-PARC. The muons from the J-PARC muon facility are once cooled to room temperature, then accelerated up to 212 MeV with a normalized emittance of 1.5 $$pi$$ mm mrad and a momentum spread of 0.1%. Four types of accelerating structures are adopted to obtain the efficient acceleration with a wide beta range from 0.01 to 0.94. The project is moving into the construction phase. We already demonstrated the re-acceleration scheme of the decelerated muons using a 324-MHz RFQ in 2017. The high-power test of the 324-MHz Interdigital H-mode (IH) DTL using a prototype cavity was performed in 2021. The fabrication of the first module of 14 modules of the 1296-MHz Disk and Washer (DAW) CCL will be done to confirm the production process. Moreover, the final design of the travelling wave accelerating structure for the high beta region is also proceeding. In this paper, the recent progress toward the realization of the world first muon linac will be presented.

Enhancement of electrical conductivity to metallization of Mn$$_{3-x}$$Fe$$_x$$O$$_4$$ spinel and postspinel with elevating pressure

High-pressure neutron diffraction proved that MnFe$$_2$$O$$_4$$ and Mn$$_2$$FeO$$_4$$ spinels transform into CaMn$$_2$$O$$_4$$-type structure above 18 GPa and 14 GPa, respectively. The transition pressure of Mn$$_{3-x}$$Fe$$_x$$O$$_4$$ solutions decreases with increasing Mn content. Synchrotron X-ray M$"{o}$ssbauer experiments revealed that Fe$$^{2+}$$ and Fe$$^{3+}$$ distribution at the tetrahedral (A) and octahedral (B) sites in the spinel structure changes with pressure. MnFe$$_2$$O$$_4$$ and Mn$$_2$$FeO$$_4$$ spinels are ferrimagnetic and the CaMn$$_2$$O$$_4$$-type phase is paramagnetic. The temperature dependence of resistivity indicates that both spinels are semiconductors wherein electrons hop between cations at the A and B sites. A pressure-induced shortening of B-B distance promoted conduction via greater electron mobility between adjacent B cations. The Fe$$^{2+}$$ and Fe$$^{3+}$$ occupancies at the B sites in MnFe$$_2$$O$$_4$$ are much larger than those in Mn$$_2$$FeO$$_4$$. The CaMn$$_2$$O$$_4$$-type phase is metallic. Theoretical calculation confirmed the metallic character and Fe d-orbitals strongly renormalized compared to Mn d-orbitals.

The HTR is a relatively simple Small Modular Reactor design featuring demonstrated robust passive and inherent safety. It responds to the needs of a very large and growing process heat market in most industrialized countries many of which pursue a stringent policy of reducing fossil fuel burn. The manuscript starts from historical developments. This article also highlights the most significant recent achievements of this technology internationally and explains its potential value in a modern energy economy beyond pure electricity generation. The article concludes with an outlook on work towards building demonstration plants, which are required to de-risk private investments and to incentivize deployment.
