The HTR is a relatively simple Small Modular Reactor design featuring demonstrated robust passive and inherent safety. It responds to the needs of a very large and growing process heat market in most industrialized countries many of which pursue a stringent policy of reducing fossil fuel burn. The manuscript starts from historical developments. This article also highlights the most significant recent achievements of this technology internationally and explains its potential value in a modern energy economy beyond pure electricity generation. The article concludes with an outlook on work towards building demonstration plants, which are required to de-risk private investments and to incentivize deployment.

The $$phi$$ meson with finite momentum in a dense medium

The dispersion relation of the $$phi$$ meson in nuclear matter is studied in a QCD sum rule approach. In a dense medium, longitudinal and transverse modes of vector particles can have independently modified dispersion relations due to broken Lorentz invariance. Employing the full set of independent operators and corresponding Wilson coefficients up to operator dimension-6, the $$phi$$ meson QCD sum rules are analyzed with changing densities and momenta. The non-trivial momentum dependence of the $$phi$$ meson mass is found to have opposite signs for the longitudinal and transverse modes. Specifically, the mass is reduced by 5 MeV for the longitudinal mode, while its increase amounts to 7 MeV for the transverse mode, both at a momentum scale of 1 GeV. In an experiment which does not distinguish between longitudinal and transverse polarizations, this could in principle be seen as two separated peaks at large momenta.

We investigate Skyrmion solution of the chiral Lagrangian with magnetic field. We find that the Skyrmion is deformed in the magnetic field and its mass increases accordingly. The nucleon and $$Delta$$ isobar states are considered in the Skyrme model.

This paper provides an update on the international effort in the development of the VHTR system pursued through international collaboration between 8 countries in the GIF and an outlook on future R&D. The versatility of the VHTR enables it to be designed with inherent safety characteristics and optimized for both electric and non-electric applications, in particular for cogeneration of heat and power. Recent highlights from the four currently active GIF VHTR R&D projects are provided and placed into the context of the related national programs. Based on VHTR's relatively high technology readiness level, orientations for future R&D are outlined and will contribute to further enhancing the system's market readiness level.

The SFR system arrangement Phase II became effective on 16 February 2016 by signatures of CEA, JAEA, KAERI, USDOE, and Rosatom, and was extended for additional 10 years. Collaboration of GIF SFR is growing adding new reactor concepts and related RDs. In 2015, a project arrangement on SFR System Integration and Assessment (SIA) has been signed by 7 members : China, EU, France, Japan, Korea, Russia and US. In the SIA project, RD needs from the SFR design will be shown to the RD project, and RD results from each RD project will be integrated into the designs.

The muon linear accelerator for the muon g-2/EDM experiment in J-PARC is being developed. As the first step of the muon acceleration, the muon acceleration with J-PARC RFQ (Radio-Frequency Quadrupole)-II plans to be demonstrated at H-line of J-PARC MLF. The slow muon will be obtained by the deceleration using the thin metal foil target in the RFQ acceleration test. The intensity of the decelerated muon by the thin metal foil was measured. Based on this result, the beam intensity in the RFQ test at H-line is estimated to be a few /sec. The particle simulation of the RFQ and the following beam diagnostics system is conducted, and it is shown that the emittance measurement at the RFQ exit using the micro-channel plate based beam profile monitor is feasible.

The information exchange meeting on HTGR and hydrogen production technology between Korea Atomic Energy research Institute (KAERI) and Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) was held in the Oarai Research and Development Center of JAEA on November 5th - 6th, 2015 based on the cooperative research program of the KAERI-JAEA implementation of "Development of HTGR and Nuclear Hydrogen Technology" under "The Implementation of Cooperative Program in the Field of Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy between KAERI and JAEA." In order to facilitate efficient technology development on the HTGR and nuclear hydrogen by the IS process, both sides mutually showed the present status and future plan of the research and development on the HTGR and nuclear hydrogen technology, respectively. This proceeding summarizes all materials of the presented technical discussions on the HTGR and hydrogen production technology based on the open documents as well as the meeting briefing including collaboration items.
