To measure $$beta$$-decay energy $$Q_{beta}$$ of short-lived fission products with good accuracy and high efficiency, we have developed a new total absorption clover detector and demonstrated its performance. Using a large-volume clover-type Ge detector having a through-hole in its center, we could measure total absorption spectra of $$beta$$ + $$gamma$$ rays with extremely high efficiency and high energy resolution, and could determine $$Q_{beta}$$ values with $$pm$$30 keV accuracy. Using this detector, we have determined the $$Q_{beta}$$ values of $$^{166}$$Eu and $$^{165}$$Gd for the first time, and of $$^{160-165}$$Eu and $$^{163}$$Gd with better accuracies. In addition, we have observed a new isomeric state in $$^{163}$$Gd, and determined its half-life and excitation energy.

Anaerobic microbial activity has a major influence on the subsurface environment, and should be considered in subsurface activities including the construction of radioactive waste repositories. We investigated denitrification and methanogenesis in anoxic groundwater from 140 m depth in two boreholes, where the redox potential fluctuated. The average maximum potential denitrification rates, measured under anaerobic conditions in the two boreholes using an $$^{15}$$N tracer. Methanogenesis candidates were detected by 16S rRNA gene analysis. Although the stable isotope signatures suggested that some of the dissolved methane was of biogenic origin, no potential for methane production was evident during the incubations. The groundwater at 140 m depth did not contain oxygen, had an Eh ranging from -144 to 6.8 mV, and was found to be a potential field for denitrification.

Proceedings of 5th International Symposium on Material Testing Reactors (ISMTR-5) (Internet), 9 Pages, 2012/10

In this study, experimental fabrication tests of the high-density MoO$$_{3}$$ pellets were carried out by the Plasma Activated Sintering (PAS) method, which requires relatively lower temperature and shorter time to fabricate the pellets. From the results, the PAS method combined with oxidation process, prior to dissolution into sodium hydroxide solution, is a useful measure to fabricate high-density MoO$$_{3}$$ Pellets for the future domestic production of $$^{rm 99m}$$Tc. The irradiation tests and characterization with these pellets will be carried out under the international cooperation.

The project of the comprehensive nuclear data research for the development of the advanced reactor systems had been executed successfully by eight organizations from 2005 to 2009. In this project, we constructed the pulsed neutron beamline that was aimed to obtain neutron capture cross-sections of long-lived fission products and minor actinides accurately. The energy spectra, spatial distributions, and pulses of the beam were studied by measurements and simulation calculations, and they were found to be consistent with those of the beamline design. In this paper, we present the overview of the project and the properties of the neutron beam provided by this beam line.

We have investigated the effects of Sn and Nb on dislocation properties in a Zr lattice in order to elucidate the role of these alloying elements in hydride nucleation processes. According to experimental observations, $$gamma$$-hydride habit planes are close to the prismatic plane in pure Zr and close to the basal plane in zircaloy. Dislocation loops are observed around hydride precipitates, implying they play a part in hydride formation. Our ab initio generalized-stacking-fault energy calculations showed remarkable effects of Sn on unstable-stacking energy and stacking-fault energy: these parameters for basal slip were considerably reduced while those for prismatic slip were increased in the presence of Sn. These results suggest selective stabilization and enhancement of dislocation spreading in the basal plane, promoting possible elementary processes of hydride precipitation with basal habit plane, i.e. screw-dislocation spreading and edge-dislocation emission in the basal plane.

Wakai, Eiichi; Kikuchi, Takayuki; Kogawara, Takafumi; Kimura, Haruyuki; Yokomine, Takehiko*; Kimura, Akihiko*; Nogami, Shuhei*; Kurishita, Hiroaki*; Saito, Masahiro*; Nishimura, Arata*; et al.

Proceedings of 23rd IAEA Fusion Energy Conference (FEC 2010) (CD-ROM), 6 Pages, 2011/03

Japanese activities of test facilities in IFMIF-EVEDA (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility-Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities) project have three subjects of engineering design of post irradiation examination (PIE) facilities, small specimen test technique (SSTT), and engineering design of high flux test module (HFTM), and this paper is summarized about present status. Functional analysis and design of 2-D and 3-D models of PIE facility were performed. In HFTM, as materials of heater, W-3Re alloy and/or SiC/SiC composite were selected in the points of high temperature materials, fabrication technology and some suitable properties such as resistance of thermal shock, high temperature re-crystallization, ductility, resistance of irradiation degradation, and low-activation. In SSTT, a test machine of fracture toughness was designed and developed for small specimens with 10 mm square, and it had high accuracy controllability for stress and displacement.
