JAEA is responsible for the procurement of 9 toroidal field (TF) coils as Japanese Domestic Agency. JAEA had started several trials to successfully develop technologies for the TF coil manufacture since March 2009, and performed one-third scale trials aiming at qualifying and optimizing the procedures of the TF coil fabrication. The fabricated double pancakes (DPs) were successfully put into the profile with tolerances from zero to 1.5 mm. These tolerances correspond to 0.06% accuracy in the conductor length. The geometry of the DP was changed after heat treatment. Heat treatment procedure to avoid such deformation should be developed or the change of winding geometry should be taken into account in the fabrication of the TF coils. The one-third scale DP was successfully impregnated. Although exothermal reaction is given to take place during curing in the blended resin, we successfully cured the one-third scale DP.

We report the present status of the sub-MeV X-ray generation via Compton backscattering by using 150-MeV electron beam and the Nd:YAG laser. In particular, we show the result of the X-ray generation experiment and of the laser pulse compression for increasing the X-ray flux.

An energy distribution function of energetic particles in the universe or cosmic rays is well represented by a power-law spectrum, therefore, nonthermal acceleration is essential to understand the origin of cosmic rays. A possible candidate for the origin of cosmic rays is wakefield acceleration at relativistic astrophysical perpendicular shocks. Substituting an intensive laser pulse for the large amplitude light waves, we performed a model experiment of the shock environments in a laboratory plasma.

Substituting an intensive laser pulse for the large amplitude light waves, we performed a model experiment of the shock environments in a laboratory plasma. An intensive laser pulse was propagated in a plasma tube created by imploding a hollow polystyrene cylinder, as the large amplitude light waves propagated in the upstream plasma at an astrophysical shock. Nonthermal electrons were generated, and the energy distribution functions of the electrons have a power-law component with an index of 2.

Improvement of SBS laser pulse compression system for the Compton backscattered X-ray source

At the previous symposium in Advanced Photon Research, we proposed and demonstrated the laser pulse compression via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) for increasing the flux of the Compton backscattered X rays. After that, we improved the SBS pulse compression system by introducing the image relay in the laser transport line. As a result, we achieve the stably compressed laser pulse with a duration of 2.1 ns and with an energy of 0.84 J. By installing this system into the Compton backscattered X-ray source, the X-ray flux will be increased 3.2 times for the present system at the KPSI-JAEA.

We constructed MeV- and sub-MeV-photon sources by means of Compton backscattering with a laser light and an electron beam at SPring-8 and KPSI-JAEA. MeV-photon source consists of a continuous-wave optically-pumped far infrared laser and an 8-GeV stored electron beam. Sub-MeV-photon source consists of a Nd:YAG pulse-laser and an 150-MeV electron beam accelerated by a microtron. Both source have been succeeded backscattered photon generation. In this talk, I will present characteristics and future prospects of these photon sources.

Spectrum modulation of relativistic electrons by laser wakefield

Energetic electrons were generated by the interaction of a high-intensity laser pulse with a plasma preformed from a hollow plastic cylinder via laser-driven implosion. The spectra of a comparatively high-density plasma had a bump around 10 MeV. Simple numerical calculations explained the spectra obtained in this experiment. This indicates that the plasma tube has sufficient potential to convert a Maxwellian spectrum to a comparatively narrow spectrum.

One of the main bottlenecks for the applications of ultrashort and ultrahigh-peak power lasers in high-field physics is a temporal contrast of the pulses. In ultrahigh-peak power lasers, a nanosecond background of the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) is generated at the same time as the femtosecond pulse. This background is mostly generated in the preamplifier (regenerative, multipass amplifier). Even though the contrast level is usually in the range from 10$$^{-5}$$ to 10$$^{-6}$$, this level is not sufficiently low at relativistic intensities greater than 10$$^{18} $$W/cm$$^{2}$$ to avoid unwanted pre-plasmas generation. We demonstrated a high-contrast, high-peak power laser with optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA). With the use of OPCPA, contrast is enhanced to better than 7$$times$$10$$^{-9}$$ in a few picoseconds before the main pulse, which corresponds to an improvement of three to four orders in magnitude compared with conventional systems.

Reported in this article is the generation of unique polarized X-rays in the sub-MeV region by means of the Thomson backscattering of the Nd:YAG laser photon with a wavelength of 1064 nm on the 150 MeV electron from the microtron accelerator. The maximum energy of the X-ray photons is estimated to about 400 keV. The total energy of the backscattered X-ray pulse is measured with an imaging plate and a LYSO scintillator. The angular divergence of the X-rays is also measured by using the imaging plate. We confirm that the X-ray beam is polarized according to the laser polarization direction with the Compton scattering method. In addition, we demonstrate the imaging of the object shielded by lead with the generated X-rays.

A conceptual design study of the sodium-cooled fast reactor is in progress in the Feasibility Study on Commercialized Fast Reactor Cycle Systems. Reduced scale water experiments are being performed in order to clarify the flow pattern in the upper plenum of the reactor which has higher velocity condition than the past design. In this report, the hydraulic analyses of the water experiments using the general-purpose thermal hydraulic analysis program were executed; and the applicability to evaluation of flow pattern and vortex cavitations for the designed reactor was examined. (1) Steady-state analyses under the Froude number similar condition were carried out for the 1/10th reduced scale plenum experiments. Analyses results reproduced the characteristic flow patterns in the upper plenum, such as gushed flow from the inside of the upper internal structure to reactor vessel wall and the jet flow from the slit of the upper internal structure. Further, it was confirmed that the calculated flow pattern of a designed reactor system agreed with that of the water experiment qualitatively. Moreover, the influence which setting of numerical solution and boundary condition etc. in analyzing causes to flow pattern in the plenum became clear. (2) The distribution of the vortices under the dipped plate region in the 1/10th plenum model was evaluated using the prediction method of a submerged vortex which is based on the stretching vortex theory. In case of the same velocity condition as the reactor, it identified the two vortices which were sucked into the hot leg piping from the cold leg piping wall as the submerged vortex cavitations. From this analysis result, it confirmed that the submerged vortex cavitations, which may occur in the reactor upper plenum steadily, could be identified using this prediction method.

The National Centralized Tokamak (NCT) facility program is a domestic research program for advanced tokamak research to succeed JT-60U incorporating Japanese university accomplishments. The mission of NCT is to establish high beta steady-state operation for DEMO and to contribute to ITER. The machine flexibility and mobility is pursued in aspect ratio and shape controllability, feedback control of resistive wall modes, wide current and pressure profile control capability for the demonstration of the high-b steady state.

Design studies are shown on the National Centralized Tokamak facility. The machine design is carried out to investigate the capability for the flexibility in aspect ratio and shape controllability for the demonstration of the high-beta steady state operation with nation-wide collaboration, in parallel with ITER towards DEMO. Two designs are proposed and assessed with respect to the physics requirements such as confinement, stability, current drive, divertor, and energetic particle confinement. The operation range in the aspect ratio and the plasma shape is widely enhanced in consistent with the sufficient divertor pumping. Evaluations of the plasma performance towards the determination of machine design are presented.
