Three-dimensional bulk Fermi surfaces and Weyl crossings of Co$$_2$$MnGa thin films underneath a protection layer

Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy utilizing soft X-ray synchrotron radiation was applied to Heusler-type Co$$_2$$MnGa thin films that have a 1-nm Al capping layer. The bulk Fermi surfaces and band structures varied along the out-of-plane momentum, stemming from the three-dimensional crystal structure, in the absence of any in situ surface treatment. In addition, there were characteristic intersecting bands (Weyl cones), with crossing points near the Fermi level, which were consistent with computed results. The Weyl cones are of bulk origin and are responsible for the high anomalous Nernst and the anomalous Hall coefficients. A close comparison of the experimental band structures in Co$$_2$$MnGe and Co$$_2$$MnGa indicated that the rigid band picture is valid in both alloys and that fine carrier tuning is possible by replacing Ga with Ge to improve the anomalous conductivity.

Unexpectedly enhanced $$alpha$$-particle preformation in $$^{48}$$Ti probed by the ($$p$$,$$palpha$$) reaction

Based on the $$^{48}$$Ti($$p$$,$$palpha$$)$$^{44}$$Ca reaction analysis, this study reports that $$alpha$$-particle formation in the medium-mass $$^{48}$$Ti nucleus is pronounced more compared to that expected through mean-field approximations. Moreover, the estimated average distance between the $$alpha$$ particle and residue equals approximately 4.5 fm. This result poses a challenge to describe the four nucleon correlations using microscopic nuclear models.

A quasifree ($$p$$,$$pn$$) experiment was performed to study the structure of the Borromean nucleus $$^{17}$$B, which had long been considered to have a neutron halo. By analyzing the momentum distributions and exclusive cross sections, we obtained the spectroscopic factors for $$1s_{1/2}$$ and $$0d_{5/2}$$ orbitals, and a surprisingly small percentage of 9(2)% was determined for $$1s_{1/2}$$. Our finding of such a small $$1s_{1/2}$$ component and the halo features reported in prior experiments can be explained by the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum, revealing a definite but not dominant neutron halo in $$^{17}$$B. The present work gives the smallest $$s$$- or $$p$$-orbital component among known nuclei exhibiting halo features and implies that the dominant occupation of $$s$$ or $$p$$ orbitals is not a prerequisite for the occurrence of a neutron halo.

Parity violating effects enhanced by up to 10$$^6$$ times have been observed in several neutron induced compound nuclei. There is a theoretical prediction that time reversal (T) violating effects can also be enhanced in these nuclei implying that T-violation can be searched for by making very sensitive measurements. However, the enhancement factor has not yet been measured in all nuclei. The angular distribution of the (n,$$gamma$$) reaction was measured with $$^{139}$$La by using a germanium detector assembly at J-PARC, and the enhancement factor was obtained. From the result, the measurement time to achieve the most sensitive T-violation search was estimated as 1.4 days, and a 40% polarized $$^{139}$$La target and a 70% polarized $$^3$$He spin filter whose thickness is 70 atm$$cdot$$cm are needed. Therefore high quality $$^3$$He spin filter is developed in JAEA. The measurement result of the (n,$$gamma$$) reaction at J-PARC and the development status of the $$^3$$He spin filter will be presented.

The proton-induced $$alpha$$ knockout reaction is one of the reaction probes for the $$alpha$$ clustering. However, it was reported that the theoretical description of the reaction cannot reproduce experimental data. In this work, we describe the $$^{20}$$Ne($$p$$,$$palpha$$)$$^{16}$$O reaction within the distorted wave impulse approximation with a $$alpha$$-$$^{16}$$O cluster wave function constructed by the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. We show that the $$^{20}$$Ne($$p$$,$$palpha$$)$$^{16}$$O cross section is quantitatively well reproduced by the present framework without any adjustable parameters. This success demonstrates that the proton-induced $$alpha$$ knockout reaction is a quantitative probe for the $$alpha$$ clustering.

Estimating the risks associated with radiation from long-lived fission products (LLFP) in radioactive waste is essential to ensure the long-term safety of potential disposal sites. In this study, the amount of $$^{93}$$Zr, a LLFP, was determined by ICP-MS after separating Zr from a spent nuclear fuel solution using a microvolume anion-exchange cartridge (TEDA cartridge). The TEDA cartridge achieved highly selective separation of Zr regardless of its small bed volume of 0.08 cm$$^{3}$$. The time taken to complete the Zr separation was 1.2 min with a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min, which was 10 times faster than that for a conventional anion-exchange resin column. Almost all the other elements were removed, leading to accurate measurement of $$^{93}$$Zr. The result connects experimental value to theoretical prediction provided by ORIGEN2, which requires verification. With the measured value, we demonstrated that the theoretical value is reliable enough to estimate radiation risks.

Neptunium-237 ($$^{237}$$Np) is one of the major long-lived radionuclides found in spent nuclear fuel. To evaluate the long-term safety of a HLW repository, the $$^{237}$$Np content in spent nuclear fuel must be determined. In this study, micro-volume anion-exchange porous polymer disk-packed cartridges were prepared for Am-Np separation, which is required prior to the measurement of $$^{237}$$ Np with ICP-MS. Disks with a volume of 0.08 cm$$^{3}$$ were cut out from porous sheets having triethylenediamine (TEDA)-containing polymer chains densely attached on the pore surface. The resulting TEDA-introduced disk cartridge was applied to a spent nuclear fuel sample. The chemical yield of Np was 90.4%, which is sufficiently high for ICP-MS measurement of $$^{237}$$Np. Compared with the conventional separation technique using commercially available anion-exchange resin columns, the time required to adsorb, wash and elute Np using the TEDA-introduced disk cartridge was reduced by 75%.

The research and development (R&D) on the production of $$^{99}$$Mo/$$^{99m}$$Tc by neutron activation method ((n, $$gamma$$) method) using JMTR has been carried out in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center. The specific radioactivity of $$^{99}$$Mo by (n, $$gamma$$) method is extremely low compared with that by fission method ((n,f) method), and as a result, the radioactive concentration of the obtained $$^{99m}$$Tc solution is also lowered. To solve the problem, we propose the solvent extraction with methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) for recovery of $$^{99m}$$Tc from $$^{99}$$Mo produced by (n, $$gamma$$) method. We have developed the $$^{99}$$Mo/$$^{99m}$$Tc separation/extraction/concentration devices and have carried out the performance tests for recovery of $$^{99m}$$Tc from $$^{99}$$Mo produced by (n, $$gamma$$) method. In this paper, in order to establish an experimental system for $$^{99}$$Mo/$$^{99m}$$Tc production, the R&D results of the system are summarized on the improvement of the devices for high-recovery rate of $$^{99m}$$Tc, on the dissolution of the pellets, which is the high-density molybdenum trioxide (MoO$$_{3}$$) pellets irradiated in Kyoto University Research Reactor (KUR), on the production of $$^{99m}$$Tc, and on the inspection of the recovered $$^{99m}$$Tc solutions.

Thermal stratification in the upper plenum is one of the most important issues of a reactor vessel in sodium cooled fast reactor. The steep temperature gradient across the stratification interface may cause the thermal load against the reactor vessel wall. In this study, the water experiment was carried out using the 1/11 scale upper plenum model of the Japan sodium-cooled fast reactor (JSFR) in order to evaluate the thermal stratification under the natural circulation condition and a direct heat exchanger (DHX) operation condition. The temperature gradient under the natural circulation condition was approximately 1/3 times smaller than that under the forced circulation condition. In the DHX operation case, the steep temperature gradient occurred in the lower region of upper plenum due to the cold fluid from the outlet of DHX.
