We have been developing the ion exchange membranes by a radiation grafted polymerization method to improve HI concentration performance for Electro-electrodialysis (EED) in the thermochemical water-splitting hydrogen production iodine-sulfur process. In this work, the crosslinking structures were introduced to the ion exchange membranes. The proton conductivity ($$sigma$$), transport number (t$$_{+}$$), and water permeation factor ($$beta$$) of these crosslinked ion exchange membranes were measured and the effect of crosslinks to these performance indexes were investigated. The introduction of crosslinks was found to improve the selectivity of H$$^{+}$$ and water transport (increase of t$$_{+}$$ and decrease of $$beta$$), although the $$sigma$$ somewhat decreased. The EED model that we established to discuss the permeation mechanism of EED system was used to theoretically analyze the effect of crosslink on the performance indexes. Based on this analysis of measurement results, the introduction of the crosslink was found to little affect the absorbed amount of HIx solution and H$$^{+}$$ diffusion coefficient in the tested membranes, whereas it could lead to decrease I$$^{-}$$ diffusion coefficient. The results of $$sigma$$ and t$$_{+}$$ could reflect these effects. In addition, we found the fact that crosslink can inhibit the swelling due to the absorption of the HIx solution. As a result, the $$beta$$ value decreased owing to the introduction of crosslink.

An electrochemical membrane Bunsen reaction using a cation exchange membrane (CEM) is a key to achieving an iodine-sulfur (IS) thermochemical water splitting process for mass-production of hydrogen. In this study, we prepared both the radiation-grafted CEM with a high ion exchange capacity (IEC) and the highly-porous Au-electroplated anode, and then used them for the membrane Bunsen reaction to reduce the cell overvoltage. The high-IEC grafted CEM exhibited low resistivity for proton transport, while the porous Au anode had a large effective surface area for anodic SO$$_{2}$$ oxidation reaction. As a result, the cell overvoltage for the membrane Bunsen reaction was significantly reduced to 0.21 V at 200 mA/cm$$^{2}$$, which was only one-third of that of the previous test using the commercial CEM and non-porous anode. From the analysis of the current-voltage characteristics, employment of the grafted CEM was found to be more effective for the overvoltage reduction compared to the porous Au anode.

We demonstrate a compact, high-spatiotemporal-quality, high-intensity diode-pumped Yb:YAG thin-disk chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) laser system that incorporates a nonlinear preamplifier based on optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA). The stretched pulses are amplified in the OPCPA preamplifier and the following Yb:YAG main amplifier to $$sim$$100 mJ at 10 Hz. The broadband amplified beam quality of 1.1 (horizontal direction) and 1.4 (vertical direction) times diffraction limited and pulse compression down to 470 fs with contrast of better than 10$$^{-8}$$ have been achieved successfully.

A one-step simple extraction chromatography method using TODGA (${it N,N,N,N'}$-tetraoctyl-diglycolamide) adsorbent column has been developed to separate the americium from plutonium-solvent extraction raffinate. The raffinate contained Am($$sim$$620 mg/$$l$$), Np($$sim$$107 mg/$$l$$), Ag($$sim$$2000 mg/$$l$$), Fe($$sim$$290 mg/$$l$$), Cr($$sim$$38 mg/$$l$$), Ni($$sim$$52 mg/$$l$$) and trace of TBP. Small-scale and scale-up tests for separation of americium and conversion to americium oxide were carried out in NUCEF. Efforts were made to increase yield and purity of americium. The americium was separated with 83-92% yields and 97-98% purities by small-scale tests and 85-95% yields and 98-99% purities by scale-up tests. The yields for conversion of americium nitrate solution to americium oxide were 89-100% by small-scale tests and 85-96 % by scale-up tests. Approximately 1.8 gram americium oxide was recovered from 6 litres of the raffinate and supplied for the research on the high-temperature chemistry of TRU.

We report on a femtosecond high-intensity OPCPA/Ti:sapphire hybrid laser system that produces more than 30 J broadband output energy, indicating the potential for achieving petawatt-class peak powers. High temporal-contrast of 10$$^{-10}$$ to 10$$^{-11}$$ has been obtained with a near-perfect flat-topped spatial-profile of filling factor $$sim$$80%. We also present a compact, high-intensity OPCPA/Yb:YAG hybrid laser system that generates $$sim$$100 mJ output energy with a temporal contrast of better than 10$$^{-8}$$ and good spatial beam quality.

We report on an ultra-high intensity petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can produce a pulse energy of $$sim$$ 18 J with $$sim$$ 30 fs pulse duration for studying extremely high intensity laser matter interaction process and a small-scaled Yb:YAG chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can generate a pulse energy of $$sim$$ 100 m J of $$sim$$ 500 fs pulse duration for compact, high efficiency, high repetition system. We discuss the basic design aspects and present the results from our experimental investigations of these laser systems.

Chronological and geochemical studies of calcium carbonates can provide precious information for changes in geochemical condition in deep geological environments. Because the carbonate can be found as common filling minerals in rocks, age zoning and spatial distribution of chemical composition in the carbonate could be a wide-use indicator to reconstruct the past environmental changes. Calcite and other carbonate materials have been dated by Isotope Dilution-Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry. On the other hand, a few of U-Pb dating studies in a micro scale area (less than 10 micrometer) such as using laser ablation-multiple collector-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICPMS) has been conducted on the carbonate. The U-Pb dating technique for the carbonates using LA-MC-ICPMS is still immature partly because of a lack of consensus international carbonate reference materials for the in-situ dating technique. In order to solve this problem, we performed a survey on the carbonate reference materials that may be suitable for high precision U-Pb dating using LA-MC-ICPMS. Additionally, we conducted experiments to make compositionally homogeneous carbonate (calcite) reference materials.

Application of cross-linked radiation-grafted cation exchange membranes for HI concentration

no journal, ,

JAEA has been conducted R&D on thermochemical water-splitting Iodine-Sulfur (IS) process. IS process has hydrogen iodide (HI) concentration section by electro-membrane process, which is so-called the electro-electrodialysis (EED). EED is the key unit operation to improve the process efficiency. In our previous study, the cation exchange membrane (CEM) was prepared by radiation-induced grafting method, and applied to EED. Our previous study suggested that permeation of anionic species and water must be inhibited to increase H+ selectivity. In the present study, to achieve this requirement, we used the novel crosslinked grafted CEMs, which were prepared by co-grafting of crosslinked agent. The performance was also evaluated experimentally for the conventional non-crosslinked and crosslinked CEMs by carrying out HI concentration tests. In conclusion, due to the cross-linking structure, we found the improvement of concentration performance.
