Dismantled uranium-contaminated parts can be disposed of as nonradioactive wastes or recycled after decontamination appropriate for clearance. previously, we developed a liquid decontamination technique using acidic electrolyzed water to remove uranium-contaminated surfaces. However, further developments are still needed for its actual application. Dismantled parts have various uranium-contaminated surface features due to varied operational conditions, inhomogeneous decontamination using iodine heptafluoride gas, and changes in long-term storage conditions after dismantling. Here, we performed liquid decontamination on specimens with varying uranium-contaminated surfaces cut from a centrifuge made of low-carbon steel. From the results, the liquid decontamination can effectively remove the uranium-contaminated surfaces, and radioactive concentrations fell below the target value within twenty minutes. Although the required time should also depend on dismantled parts' sizes and shapes in their actual application, we demonstrated that it could be an effective decontamination technique for uranium-contaminated steels of dismantled centrifuges.

Aiming of development of facilities for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) that can be installed in hospitals, an accelerator-based BNCT facility is being developed at the Ibaraki Neutron Medical Research Center under a collaboration among the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, the University of Tsukuba, and other institutions. It consists of a proton accelerator, having a maximum beam power of 80 kW, and a target, moderator, collimator and shield (TMCS) system. For the design concept, to satisfy the BNCT beam conditions and achieve a low activation, the radiation behavior in the TMCS system was simulated by the Monte Carlo method and this system configuration was optimized accordingly. In addition, the radiation estimation of the TMCS system was verified via several experiments and its applicability for BNCT was proved. This report reviews the estimation and validation studies for the development of the accelerator-based BNCT facility.

This paper presents status of development of the iSRE (integrated system for repository engineering) as a design supporting system that enables rational designing of a geological disposal repository. The complimentary technique of construction information modeling/management (CIM) has been employed for the development of iSRE. CIM uses a shared three dimensional (3D) model of associated data through common data models. In this paper, as a design support system that conforms to the characteristics of information management about engineering technology represented by repetition of design during the disposal project period, we examined and designed the function of the "iSRE", constructed a prototype, and confirmed the function through a trial simulating actual work in the disposal project. As a result, with respect to the functions of DB and IF of the iSRE, we got a prospect that these functions can be the foundation of information management on engineering technology, and development of the prototype of the iSRE and its test run extracted issues for practical use of such system.

A problem of irradiation damage is the one observed in each part of a component of particle accelerators; accelerating tubs, scrapers, monitors and neutron targets. In-situ observation by an actual proton accelerator is made our last target. We observed the radiation damage of the various materials used by particle accelerators. From the distant place the target which is in the high radiation area, we propose the method to get information from the catoptric light from the target using a laser as a light source. A principle of this observation method as well as generating process of blisterings and limitation of this method will be reported.

The proton linac installed in the Ibaraki Neutron Medical Research Center is used for production of the intense neutron flux for the Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). The linac consists of the 3-MeV RFQ and the 8-MeV DTL. Design average beam current is 10mA. Target is made of Beryllium. First neutron production from the Beryllium target was observed at the end of 2015 with the low intensity beam as a demonstration. After the observation of neutron production, a lot of improvement s was carried out in order to increase the proton beam intensity for the real beam commissioning. The beam commissioning has been started on May 2016. The status of the commissioning is summarized in this report.

We choose nuclear data and nuclear material inspection for energy application and nondestructive testing of explosive and hidden nuclear materials for security application. 90 keV electrostatic accelerators of deuterium are commercially available for nondestructive testing. For nuclear data measurement, electrostatic ion accelerators and L-band and S-band electron linear accelerators (linac) are used for the neutron source. Compact or mobile X-band electron linac neutron sources are under development. Compact proton linac neutron source is used for nondestructive testing especially water in solids. Several efforts for more neutron intensity using proton and deuteron accelerators are also introduced.

Spent zeolite adsorption vessels in the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant are kept for long-term with washing out with fresh water for prevention of corrosion remaining salt component in vessel. However, corrosion result is concerned by residual concentration of salt component, washing out experiment is carried out using actual and unspent adsorption vessel (KURION). KURION adsorption vessel is filled with 1,650 ppm of sodium chloride (1,000 ppm of chloride ion) and washed out with pure water for estimating washing effect in this experiment. Pure water is streamed with volume flow rate 4.5 m/h, chloride concentration in vessel is measured with drainage sample water. 1,000 ppm of chloride concentration is decreased till 0.5 ppm and below by washing out with about double pure water volume of adsorbing material filling volume in vessel, washing out is more effective in KURION adsorption vessel.

Times Cited Count:123 Percentile:93.78(Chemistry, Physical)In situ electrochemical X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements were performed at the Pt L and Ce L edges of the Pt-CeO/C catalyst, which was prepared by a combined process of precipitation and coimpregnation methods, as well as at the Pt L edge of the conventional Pt/C catalyst in oxygen-saturated HSO solution to clarify the role of CeO in the reduction of the overpotential for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the Pt-CeO nanocomposite compared with the conventional Pt/C catalyst. XAFS measurements clearly show that the enhancement of ORR activity is attributed to the inhibition of Pt oxide formation by the CeO layer, of which Ce was oxidized to Ce instead of Pt at the Pt oxide formation potential.

We have described the valence transition in YbInCu in terms of the charge transfer from the CB to Yb 4 states.

In the Niigataken Chuetsu-oki Earthquake on 2007, observed earthquake motion exceeded design base at the Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear plant. However, there was no earthquake damage in safety important equipments to stop reactor, to cool reactor, and to contain radioactive materials. One of this reason is said that many safety margin are included in the design and the permissible value. To know more accurate safety margin, shearing force examinations for the base bolts were conducted. In examinations, delegate test-bolts were made; the test bolts were selected from heavier equipment in Tokai Reprocessing Plant. In this report, the shearing strength obtained from the examinations shows more accurate safety margin.

Ion cyclotron emissions (ICEs) due to deuterium-deuterium fusion-product (FP) ions on JT-60U are studied. ICE due to H-ions is identified from the difference of the toroidal wave number of 2nd ICE(D). The parameter dependence for the appearance of ICE(H) is investigated from the experimental conditions and also is studied by using "Escape Particle Orbit analysis Code (EPOC)".
