TRP has stored the plutonium in solution state for long-term since the last PCDF operation in 2007 was finished. After the great east Japan earthquake in 2011, JAEA had investigated the risk against potential hazard of these solutions which might lead to make hydrogen explosion and/or boiling of the solution accidents with the release of radioactive materials to the public when blackout. To reduce the risk for storing Pu solution (about 640 kg Pu), JAEA planned to perform the process operation for the solidification and stabilization of the solution by converted into MOX powder at PCDF in 2013. In order to perform PCDF operation without adaption of new safety regulation, JAEA conducted several safety measures such as emergency safety countermeasures, necessary security and safeguards (3S) measures with understanding of NRA. As a result, the PCDF operation had stared on 28th April, 2014, and successfully completed to convert MOX powder on 3rd August, 2016 for about 2 years as planned.

Dismantling activities of equipments in JAERI's Reprocessing Test Facility (JRTF) started from 1996 as a part of decommissioning of this facility. The large liquid waste storage tank LV-2 is scheduled to remove out as a whole tank without cutting in pieces from the annex building B to confirm safety and efficiency of this method from 2006. Before removal of the LV-2 tank, some preparatory works were carried out such as opening of concrete wall (LV-2 room) for the entrance of workers and materials, removal of pipes connected to the LV-2 tank, and decontamination of radioactive sludge in the LV-2 tank. Useful data were collected on manpower, radiation control and waste amount through the preparatory works, and work efficiency was analyzed by use of these data. It was compared manpower between core boring and hand-breaker crushing activities in the concrete wall opening work. It was also confirmed that local exposure of worker could be reduced in large extent by an addition of vinyl chloride cover on worker's ventilated suit.

Characterization of a novel Cd sensitive mutant in Arabidopsis

no journal, ,

Phytochelatin (PC) has been shown to play an important role in heavy metal detoxification. However, Arabidopsis transgenic plants overexpressing the PC synthase gene failed to show an increase in Cd tolerance. To explore a novel heavy metal detoxification mechanism, we screened for an Arabidopsis Cd-sensitive mutant (${it cds1}$) by carbon ion beam mutagenesis, which causes large base pair deletions at random loci in the genome. Genetic analyses and GSH synthesis inhibitor studies revealed that the ${it cds1}$ phenotype was different from those of PC synthesis mutants. Moreover, Cd content in shoots of ${it cds1}$ cultured on Cd-containing media was similar to wild type, suggesting that Cd-sensitive phenotype of ${it cds1}$ was not attributed to the Cd transport system from roots to shoots. In the rough mapping, ${it cds1}$ was localized to approximately 300kbp region of chromosome 4. One of the genes was found to have a 2.5 kbp deletion in the promoter region.

Shotcreting is currently underway in the south research access tunnel 500 m underground at Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory. The use of the low alkaline super shotcrete spraying method, which makes it possible to obtain high strength and high stiffness quickly after spraying while minimizing an environmental impact, is being considered as a means of stabilizing an excavated rock surface whose condition is rapidly deteriorating. For the purpose of evaluating the applicability of the method to the shotcreting work currently in progress, a verification field test was conducted. This paper briefly reports on the test.
