How different is the core of $$^{25}$$F from $$^{24}$$O$$_{g.s.}$$ ?

The structure of a neutron-rich $$^{25}$$F nucleus is investigated by a quasifree ($$p,2p$$) knockout reaction. The sum of spectroscopic factors of $$pi 0d_{5/2}$$ orbital is found to be 1.0 $$pm$$ 0.3. The result shows that the $$^{24}$$O core of $$^{25}$$F nucleus significantly differs from a free $$^{24}$$O nucleus, and the core consists of $$sim$$35% $$^{24}$$O$$_{rm g.s.}$$, and $$sim$$65% excited $$^{24}$$O. The result shows that the $$^{24}$$O core of $$^{25}$$F nucleus significantly differs from a free $$^{24}$$O nucleus. The result may infer that the addition of the $$0d_{5/2}$$ proton considerably changes the neutron structure in $$^{25}$$F from that in $$^{24}$$O, which could be a possible mechanism responsible for the oxygen dripline anomaly.

In this study, fuel loading effects in BWR spent fuel rack accidents are widely investigated using three-dimensional analysis methods from both nuclear and thermal hydraulics viewpoints, including: (a) Decay heat of spent fuel after discharge, (b) The maximum temperature of spent fuel cladding in the spent fuel rack depending on heat transfer phenomena, and (c) Criticality of the spent fuel rack after collapsing of the fuel due to a severe accidents in the BWR spent fuel pool (SFP).

A radiation-induced bystander response is generally known as a cellular response induced in unirradiated cell by receiving bystander signaling factors released from directly irradiated cells of a cell population. Bystander responses induced by high-LET heavy ions at low fluence are an important problem concerning the health of astronauts in the space environment. Here we set out NO-mediated bystander signal transductions induced by high-LET heavy-ion microbeam irradiation in normal human fibroblasts. Our findings suggest that Akt- and NF-$$kappa$$B-dependent signaling pathway involving COX-2 plays an important role in the NO-mediated high-LET heavy-ion-induced bystander responses. Additionally, COX-2 may be used as a molecular marker of high-LET heavy-ion-induced bystander cells, which are distinguish form directly irradiated cells.

Mechanisms for the induction of radioadaptive response by radiation-induced bystander response

The objective of this project is to elucidate molecular mechanisms for the induction of radioadaptive response through radiation-induced bystander responses induced by irradiation with heavy ion microbeams in JAEA. We found that the adaptive response was induced by Ar (520 MeV $$^{40}$$Ar$$^{14+}$$) microbeam-irradiation of a limited number of cells, followed by the broad beam-irradiation and that the adaptive response was almost completely suppressed by the addition of carboxy-PTIO, as a nitric oxide (NO) scavenger. In addition, we found several genes induced specifically and preferentially when radioadaptive response could be induced. We confirmed that ${it iNOS}$ expression was specifically induced only when radioadaptive response could be induced. Our findings strongly suggested that radioadaptive response can be induced by NO-mediated bystander responses evoked by irradiation with heavy ion microbeams.

Radiation-induced bystander responses are defined as responses in cells that have not been directly targeted by radiation but are in the neighborhood of cells that have been directly exposed. In this study, we aim to clarify a role of bystander response to sustain the homeostasis of damaged tissue using heavy-ion microbeams. We established the heavy-ion microbeam irradiation method to a 3D cultured human epidermis. Using this method, a viable cell rate of the 3D cultured human epidermis irradiated with 260 MeV $$^{20}$$Ne-ion microbeams or broadbeams was analyzed by the MTT method.

LET dependency of human normal dermal cells survival in carbon ion irradiation

In the clinical application of carbon-ion (C-ion) radiation therapy in Japan, different RBE values of carbons have been used for clinical and biological endpoints. The biological RBE (bRBE) was estimated by a method that is based on the linear-quadratic (LQ) model, and was defined ${it in vitro}$ at the 10% surviving fraction of human salivary gland (HSG) tumor cells. However, many of biological parameters, that is, type of tissues, different sort of cells, oxygenation levels, and all, could affect radiosensitivity. Thus, normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) cells were exposed to C-ion beams at Gunma University (10-80 keV/micrometer) and TIARA (108 and 158 keV/micrometer). The surviving fractions were analyzed with colony formation assays. The experimental RBE (eRBE) values were estimated from the radiation dose survival curve fitted by LQ model, and defined ${it in vitro}$.

Neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction for LaCo$$_{1-x}$$ Rh$$_{x}$$O$$_{3}$$ have been carried out in order to investigate the structural properties related with the spin state of Co$$^{3+}$$ ions. We have found that the values of the Co(Rh)-O bond lengths in the Co(Rh)O$$_{6}$$ octahedron of LaCo$$_{0.8}$$Rh$$_{0.2}$$O$$_{3}$$ are nearly identical at 10 K. The lattice volume for the Rh$$^{3+}$$ substituted samples decreases with the thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of LaCoO$$_{3}$$ from room temperature, and ceases to decrease around 70 K. These experimental results favor a mixed state consisting of the high-spin state and low-spin state Co$$^{3+}$$ ions, and suggest that the high-spin state Co$$^{3+}$$ ions are thermally excited in addition to those pinned by the substituted Rh$$^{3+}$$ ions.

Design performance of front steering-type electron cyclotron launcher for ITER

An applicability of a front steering type EC launcher to a fusion reactor is described with the design and thermal, electromagnetic and nuclear analysis using the ITER design conditions. Maximum stress of the support keys of the front shield module, the welds of the keys and the mirror shaft induced by electromagnetic force are 85.5MPa and 34.1MPa and 22MPa, respectively, which are less than 1.5Sm of stainless steel(205MPa). Maximum thermal stress in the front shield module and the mirror, which are 249MPa and 350MPa, respectively, are obtained at the inner surface of a stainless steel cooling tube. The stresses are less 3Sm of stainless steel at 200$$^{circ}$$C(410MPa). The annual neutron fluence and the dose rate at the vacuum window(closure plate) are estimated to be 10$$^{13}$$$$sim$$10$$^{12}$$ n/cm$$^{2}$$/yr and 45$$mu$$Sv/h, respectively that satisfy the shield criteria of the ITER. It appears that the design of the front steering type EC launcher is applicable to an ITER grade reactor.

On September 30 in 1999, the reactivity accident occurred at the Tokai uranium processifn facility of J. C. O. Co. Ltd(JCO) at Tokai-mura, Japan. Before the accident had been brought under control, the local authorities evacuated the population living within a few hundred meters and advised people within 10km of the facility to take shelter for a period of about one day. Questionnaires were conducted to know when, where and how the inhabitants received the information of protective action requests from the local authories and how they responded to the requests.
