It is generally known that irradiating a solid surface with a laser pulse of ultra-relativistic intensity generates a plasma on the surface, which in turn creates an ultrahigh pressure inside. In this study, the crystal structure analysis of high-pressure phases generated inside silicon single-crystals irradiated by this laser was performed using the diffraction system at the Stress and Imaging apparatus of BL22XU, which is a JAEA-BL. The results obtained confirm the existence of high-pressure phases that silicon is said to possess: body-centered, rhombohedral, hexagonal, and tetragonal phases in the interior. We can get the results that the crystal structure of silicon polymorphs of being include body-centered, rhombohedral, hexagonal-diamond, tetragonal exists. In the future, we will accumulate data and apply them to control the internal structure, strength, and functionality of materials.

For the understanding of the crystal structural effect on the electrical properties, the local disorder in BaSnInO which is one of the excellent proton conductors for solid oxide fuel cells was estimated by using the Atomic Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis method with the neutron diffraction. The local structure is almost the same as the average structure which was estimated by the Rietveld analysis using the cubic crystal structure (space group, ) in the atomic distance range of 6. The PDF profile was fitted better using the tetragonal crystal structure with the space group of 4/ than those with in the range 6. Those results indicate the presence of the local disorder in the lattice. In this work, the relationship between the average and local structures of BaSnInO will be discussed.

The coupling efficiency from the laser to the imploded column was 14%-21%, implying strong collimation of energetic electrons over a distance of 300 micron of the plasma. Particle-in-cell simulation shows confinement of the energetic electrons by self-generated magnetic and electrostatic fields excited along the imploded plasmas, and the efficient fast heating in the compressed region.

The oxidation state of actinide elements encapsulated in fullerenes is studied. HPLC elution behavior of actinide-fullerenes is classified into two groups; the elution behavior of the first group, encapsulating U, Np, and Am, is similar to that of the light lanthanide-fullerenes, such as La, Ce, Pr, and Nd, while the behavior of the second group, encapsulating Th and Pa, is quite different from that of any lanthanide-fullerenes. The chemical species in the main HPLC elution peak of each group were identified as M@C82 and M@C84 (M = metal atom) from the mass of the U and Th fullerenes, respectively. The oxidation states of the U and Th atoms in the fullerenes were deduced to be 3+ and 4+, respectively, from the UV/vis/NIR absorption and XANES spectroscopy.

Nowadays industrial materials tend to include a variety of additives and to be a composite of them to satisfy a high request for intelligent function and durability. Elucidation of such a multi-component and hierarchical structure is really a tough work but indispensable to learn the fundamentals of relation between the structure and property and to attain a reasonable improvement of those materials. Combined use of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) often gives a good clue to decompose the total scattering of the organic/inorganic composite into the partial scattering from a particular component. Two examples will be demonstrated here for extracting the structural information from the composite specimen via this method; one is the distribution of the dopant nitrogen atoms in the porous photocatalyst and the other is the dispersion state of fillers in the rubber matrix.

2D neutron diffraction imaging of an ammonite fossil was carried out at high-intensity total diffractometer NOVA in J-PARC. Observed diffraction profiles consist of calcite, siderite and amorphous structures. Most of part in the ammonite is calcite. The calcite image shows air chambers divided by septa in the spiral shell. Siderite is observed only in the body chamber. Amorphous structure is observed in both the protoconch and the inner whorls.

Neutron diffraction imaging for a SUS430 plate embedded in a copper block sample has been tested at the high-intensity total diffractometer NOVA in J-PARC, the High-Resolution Powder Diffractometer HRPD and the diffractometer for Residual Stress Analysis RESA in JRR-3. The results are also compared with that measured at the Thermal Neutron Radiography Facility TNRF in JRR-3.

The average and local structures of BaSnInO which is one of the excellent solid electrolytes for solid oxide fuel cells were analyzed by using the Rietveld method and the Atomic Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis method with the neutron diffraction to research the crystal structural effect on the electrical properties. PDF profile which was obtained from the neutron diffraction data of BaSnInO was fitted by using the crystal structure with the space group, -3 which corresponds with the average structure, and the fitting relatively good reproduces the observed data. In this work, the relationship between the average and local structures of hydrogen doped and undoped BaSnInO will be discussed.
