Basic design of the Hot Laboratory exhaust stack

When the roof of the JMTR Hot Laboratory (HL) building was repaired for rain leaks in January, 2015, thinning was found at one of the anchor bolts on base of the HL exhaust stack. Moreover, the thinning of some anchor bolts and gaps between the anchor bolt nuts and flange plate was found in the later investigation for the exhaust stack. Since the possibility of the exhaust stack collapsing cannot be denied, it was removed. Therefore, it became necessary to rebuild a new exhaust stack as soon as possible. The design of the new exhaust stack was based on the measures to prevent rainwater intrusion into the base, which was the cause of the thinning of the anchor bolts found in the investigation, and on the new regulatory standards established after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Furthermore, since the new exhaust stack corresponds to buildings and structures that must undergo building confirmation, the soundness of the new exhaust stack against seismic force and wind load was evaluated based on the Building Standards Law and the Stack Structure Design Guideline. This report described the basic design of the new exhaust stack.

An in-flight separator, BigRIPS, at RIBF in RIKEN provides each experiment with specific nuclides separated from many nuclides produced by projectile fragmentation or in-flight fission. In this process, nuclides other than separated ones are discarded on the slits in BigRIPS, although they include many nuclides interested from the view point of nuclear structure. In order to extract these nuclides for parasitic experiments, we are developing a method using laser ion-source (PALIS). A test experiment with $$^{78}$$Se beam from RIBF has been performed by using a gas cell set in BigRIPS. Unstable nuclides around $$^{67}$$Se were stopped in the gas cell in accordance with a calculation using LISE code. The stopping efficiency has been estimated to be about 30%. As a next step, we will establish the technique for extracting reaction products from the gas cell.

Improvement of plant reliability based on reliability-centered-maintenance (RCM) is going to be undertaken in NPPs. RCM is supported by risk-based maintenance (RBM). The combination of prediction and inspection is one of the key issues to promote RBM. Early prediction of IGSCC occurrence and its propagation should be confirmed throughout the entire plant systems which should be accomplished by inspections at the target locations followed by timely application of suitable countermeasures. From the inspections, accumulated data will be applied to confirm the accuracy of the code, to tune some uncertainties of the key data for prediction, and then, to increase their accuracy. The synergetic effects of prediction and inspection on application of effective and suitable countermeasures are expected. In the paper, the procedures for the combination of prediction and inspection are introduced.

Bulk samples of Ni$$_{3}$$Nb and Ni$$_{3}$$Ta intermetallic compounds were irradiated with 16 MeV Au, 4.5 MeV Ni, 4.5 MeV Al, 200 MeV Xe and 1.0 MeV He ions, and the change in near-surface lattice structure was investigated by means of the grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD)and EXAFS. The Ni$$_{3}$$Nb and Ni$$_{3}$$Ta lattice structures transform from the ordered structures (orthorhombic and monoclinic structures for Ni$$_{3}$$Nb and Ni$$_{3}$$Ta, respectively) to the amorphous state by the Au, Ni, Al and Xe ion irradiations. Irrespective of such heavy ion species or energies, the lattice structure transformation to the amorphous state almost correlate with the density of energy deposited through elastic collisions.

Ni$$_3$$Nb and Ni$$_3$$Ta intermetallic compounds, which show the complicated lattice structures were irradiated with 16 MeV Au$$^{5+}$$ ions at room temperature. The X-ray diffraction measurement revealed that the lattice structure of these intermetallic compounds changed from the ordered structures to the amorphous state by the ion irradiation. The irradiation-induced amorphization caused the increase in Vickers hardness. The result was compared with our previous results for Ni$$_3$$Al and Ni$$_3$$V, and was discussed in terms of the intrinsic lattice structures of the samples.

Formation of NaCl-type monodeuteride LaD by the disproportionation reaction of LaD$$_{2}$$

Hydrogen atoms absorbed in a metal occupy the interstitial sites of the metal lattice. In an fcc metal lattice, each metal atom has two tetrahedral (T) and one octahedral (O) sites that can accommodate hydrogen. Rare-earth metal La forms T-site occupied LaH$$_2$$ and fully occupied LaH$$_3$$. O-site occupied or NaCl-type monohydride has yet to be reported for rare-earth metals. Previous X-ray diffraction measurements revealed the pressure-induced decomposition of an fcc-LaH$$_{2.3}$$ into H-rich and H-poor phases around 11 GPa. The present neutron diffraction measurements on LaD$$_{2}$$ confirm the formation of NaCl-type LaD as a counterpart of the D-rich LaD$$_{2+delta}$$ by disproportionation. First-principle calculations demonstrate that the NaCl-type LaH is stabilized at high pressures. Finding the NaCl-type LaH will pave the way for investigations on the site-dependent nature of hydrogen-metal interactions.

In the IFMIF/EVEDA accelerator, the engineering validation up to 9 MeV by employing the deuteron beam of 125 mA are planning at the BA site in Rokkasho, Aomori, Japan, the personnel protection system (PPS) is indispensable. The PPS inhibit the beam by receiving the interlock signal from the $$gamma$$-ray and neutron monitoring system. The $$gamma$$-ray and neutron detection level which is planned to be adopted are "80 keV to 1.5 MeV ($$gamma$$-ray)" and "0.025 eV to 15 MeV (neutron)". For the present shielding design, it is absolutely imperative for the safety review to validate the shielding ability which makes detection level lower than these $$gamma$$-ray and neutron detector. For this purpose, the energy reduction of neutron and photon for water and concrete is evaluated by PHITS code. From the calculating results, it is found that the photon energy range extended to 10 MeV by water and concrete shielding material only, an additional shielding to decrease the photon energy of less than 1.5 MeV is indispensable.

The electronic structure of lithium amide, which is lightweight complex hydride expected as a high-capacity hydrogen storage material, is investigated by N 1$$s$$ soft X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The overall feature of the electronic structure of lithium amide by the XES and XAS is consistent with the band calculation, while the strongly hybridized state with H 1$$s$$ is located at higher binding energy than the band calculation.

Infrared reflectivity spectra of the multilayered HgBa$$_{2}$$Ca$$_{n-1}$$Cu$$_{n}$$O$$_{2n+2+delta}$$ (${it n}$ = 2, 3, 4, and 5) are measured. Optical plasma modes associated with the Josephson coupling between CuO$$_{2}$$ planes within a multilayer appear below $$T$$$$_{rm c}$$ in the c-axis component of the reflectivity spectrum. For the bilayer and trilayer compound an optical Josephson plasma mode appears at unprecedentedly high frequency, $$sim$$ 700-800 cm$$^{-1}$$, below $$T$$$$_{rm c}$$. The plasma frequencies appreciably decrease in four- and five-layer compounds which indicates the suppression of superconducting order in the inner CuO$$_{2}$$ planes, consistent with the result of NMR experiment.

Development of a prototype module for the ERL superconducting main linac at KEK

A prototype module including a couple of 1.3 GHz superconducting 9-cell cavities has been designed as the main linac of cERL which is the test facility to establish the basic ERL technology at KEK. The shape of 9-cell Nb structure is optimized to accelerate a CW beam of 100 mA with sufficiently damped higher order modes (HOM) which is achieved by adopting an eccentric fluted beam pipe and a cylindrical beam pipe of a large diameter of 120 mm. Extracted HOMs are absorbed by the ferrite cylinders bonded on the copper beam pipes by HIP process. A power coupler with double disk-ceramics has been developed to transfer an RF of 20 kW CW to the cavity in full reflection. The test results of fabrication, cooling and RF performance for these components are integrated as the prototype module of the main linac for cERL facility.

Recent progress in the energy recovery linac project in Japan

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

Strong carrier-scattering in iron-pnictide superconductors ${it Ln}$FeAsO$$_{1-y}$$ (${it Ln}$ = La and Nd) obtained from charge transport experiments

Characteristic normal-state charge transport is found in the oxygen-deficient iron-arsenides ${it Ln}$FeAsO$$_{1-y}$$ (${it Ln}$: La and Nd) with the highest ${it T}$ $$_{c}$$'s among known Fe-based superconductors. The effect of "doping" in this system is mainly on the carrier scattering, quite distinct from that in high-${it T}$ $$_{c}$$ cuprates. In the superconducting regime of the La system with maximum ${it T}$ $$_{c}$$ = 28 K, the low-temperature resistivity is dominated by a ${it T}$ $$^{2}$$ term. On the other hand, in the Nd system with ${it T}$ $$_{c}$$ higher than 40 K, the carriers are subject to stronger scattering showing ${it T}$ -linear resistivity and small magnetoresistance. Such strong scattering appears crucial for high-${it T}$ $$_{c}$$ superconductivity in the iron-based system.

Effect of hydrogenation on the electronic state of metallic La hydrides probed by X-ray absorption sectroscopy at the La $$L$$-edges

We have investigated the effect of hydrogenation on La $$5d$$ and $$6p$$ electronic states in metallic LaH$$_x$$ by X-ray absorption near edge structure at the La $$L$$-edges. As the hydrogen content $$x$$ increases from 0 to 2.6, white-line intensity at the La $$L_{2,3}$$-edges shows a remarkable increase in the range of $$x$$ $$>$$ 2.0. This is interpreted as the increase in La $$5d$$ hole induced by interstitial H atoms on the octahedral sites. On the other hand, the shoulder structure at the La $$L_1$$-edge disappears in the process of $$x$$ = 0.0 $$rightarrow$$ 2.0, indicating that the $$p$$-$$ d$$ hybridization is weakened by H atoms on the tetrahedral sites. This study demonstrates that H atoms on the two interstitial H sites provide different contribution to the modification of the electronic states.

We investigate the effect of disorder at various lattice sites outside the CuO$$_{2}$$ plane on the superconducting critical temperature $$T$$$$_{rm c}$$ of the cuprate superconductor Bi$$_2$$Sr$$_2$$CaCu$$_2$$O$$_{8+delta}$$ (Bi2212). The most effective disorder turns out to be that at the Sr site in the neighboring blocks, which contain apical-oxygen atoms.
