By analyzing the momentum distributions and exclusive cross sections, we obtained the spectroscopic factors for and orbitals, and a surprisingly small percentage of 9(2)% was determined for . Our finding of such a small component and the halo features reported in prior experiments can be explained by the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum, revealing a definite but not dominant neutron halo in B. The present work gives the smallest - or -orbital component among known nuclei exhibiting halo features and implies that the dominant occupation of or orbitals is not a prerequisite for the occurrence of a neutron halo.

Times Cited Count:8 Percentile:56.2(Physics, Multidisciplinary)Searching for effective pathways for the production of proton- and neutron-rich isotopes through an optimal combination of reaction mechanism and energy is one of the main driving forces behind experimental and theoretical nuclear reaction studies as well as for practical applications in nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste. We report on a study on incomplete fusion induced by deuteron, which contains one proton and one neutron with a weak binding energy and is easily broken up. This reaction study was achieved by measuring directly the cross sections for both proton and deuteron for Pd at 50 MeV/u via inverse kinematics technique. The results provide direct experimental evidence for the onset of a cross-section enhancement at high energy, indicating the potential of incomplete fusion induced by loosely-bound nuclei for creating proton-rich isotopes and nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste.

The measurements revealed that the Yb valence decreases with decreasing temperature in the range from 200 to 2 K and increases with increasing magnetic field in the range from 0 to 33 T without showing an abrupt change in the Yb valence. The Yb valence is in the range from 2.92 to 2.96 depending on temperature and magnetic field. With respect to the valence being 2.92 at 0 T and 2.93 at 33 T in 2 K, YbRhSi is a valence fluctuation compound and does not reach the integer trivalent state at high magnetic field. These results endorse the conventional knowledge that the valence of Yb is very close to the integer value of 3+, decreases with decreasing temperature, and becomes closer to 3+ with increasing magnetic field.

The total activity of Be are evaluated by two different methods. The activity obtained measuring the decay -rays after 1912 shots at 1 Hz is 1.70.2 Bq. This is in good agreement with 1.60.3 Bq evaluated from the proton energy distribution measured using a time-of-flight detector and the nuclear reaction cross-sections. We conclude that the production of activity can be monitored in real time using the time-of-flight-detector placed inside a diverging proton beam coupled with a high-speed signal processing system.

However, benchmarking of the nuclear data in MeV energy region is not sufficient even now. In the present study, benchmark performance in the MeV energy region was investigated theoretically in case of experiments by using a 14MeV neutron source. We carried out a systematical analysis for light to heavy materials. As a result, the benchmark performance for neutron spectrum was confirmed to be acceptable, while for -ray it was not sufficient. This indicates it was effective to use a spectrum shifter. As a shifter beryllium had the best performance. Moreover, it was preliminarily examined whether it is really acceptable that only the spectrum before last collision is considered in the benchmark performance analysis. It was pointed out that not only the last collision but also more previous collisions should be taken into account equally in the benchmark performance analysis.

Times Cited Count:1 Percentile:10.73(Nuclear Science & Technology)Irradiation experiments of 14 MeV neutrons have been performed on a Li block assembly of 46 51 51 cm with a 5 cm thick V-alloy layer inside to examine the accuracy of neutronics calculations for the Li/V-alloy blanket design. Foils of Nb, Ni, In and Au for reaction rate measurements of Nb(n,2n)Nb, Ni(n,p)Co, In(n,n')In, Au(n,)Au reactions and Li enriched (Li: 95.5%) and Li enriched (Li: 99.9%) LiCO pellets for tritium production rate measurements were installed in the assembly. Results of the measurements were compared with those of calculations with MCNP5, JENDL-3.3 and JENDL/D-99. The comparisons for the reaction rates in the Nb, Ni and In foils indicate that measurements and calculations of the fast neutron transport are consistent almost within 10%. In the comparison for the reaction rates in the Au foils, the underestimation of 15% was found at a surface of the V-alloy layer. There is a possibility that this is due to the elastic scattering cross section of V around 4 keV as previously reported. The comparisons for tritium production rates in the Li enriched and Li enriched LiCO pellets indicate that calculated rates were larger than results of the measurements by 2-8% and 1-4%, respectively.

Times Cited Count:25 Percentile:79.43(Physics, Nuclear)A laser-driven repetition-rated 1.9 MeV proton beam line composed of permanent quadrupole magnets (PMQs), a radio frequency (rf) phase rotation cavity, and a tunable monochromator is developed to evaluate and to test the simulation of laser-accelerated proton beam transport through an integrated system for the first time. In addition, the proton spectral modulation and focusing behavior of the rf phase rotationcavity device is monitored with input from a PMQ triplet. In the 1.9 MeV region we observe very weakproton defocusing by the phase rotation cavity. The final transmitted bunch duration and transverse profile are well predicted by the PARMILA particle transport code. The transmitted proton beam duration of 6 ns corresponds to an energy spread near 5% for which the transport efficiency is simulated to be 10%. The predictive capability of PARMILA suggests that it can be useful in the design of future higher energy transport beam lines as part of an integrated laser-driven ion accelerator system.

At the previous symposium in Advanced Photon Research, we proposed and demonstrated the laser pulse compression via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) for increasing the flux of the Compton backscattered X rays. After that, we improved the SBS pulse compression system by introducing the image relay in the laser transport line. As a result, we achieve the stably compressed laser pulse with a duration of 2.1 ns and with an energy of 0.84 J. By installing this system into the Compton backscattered X-ray source, the X-ray flux will be increased 3.2 times for the present system at the KPSI-JAEA.

We constructed MeV- and sub-MeV-photon sources by means of Compton backscattering with a laser light and an electron beam at SPring-8 and KPSI-JAEA. MeV-photon source consists of a continuous-wave optically-pumped far infrared laser and an 8-GeV stored electron beam. Sub-MeV-photon source consists of a Nd:YAG pulse-laser and an 150-MeV electron beam accelerated by a microtron. Both source have been succeeded backscattered photon generation. In this talk, I will present characteristics and future prospects of these photon sources.

Times Cited Count:3 Percentile:24.52(Nuclear Science & Technology)In order to validate evaluated nuclear data libraries for fusion reactor designs, various integral benchmark experiments with DT neutrons have been carried out so far on structural and advanced blanket materials at the FNS facility of JAEA. In this study, a neutron spectrum shifter, which will be placed between a sample and the DT neutron source to moderate DT neutrons incident to the sample, was adopted in order to carry out the nuclear data benchmarking induced with several MeV neutrons effectively. In order to estimate effects of the spectrum shifter, the ratio of contribution of initial 14 MeV neutrons in leakage neutron and -ray spectra was calculated for the experimental configuration at FNS with a modified MCNP-4C code. The calculations were carried out for a LiTiO sample with a Be, LiD, or DO spectrum shifter. It was found that the Be shifter was superior to others and the contribution of initial 14 MeV neutrons varied depending on material and size of the sample and shifter. The present analysis also suggested that the Be shifter was effective for secondary -ray experiments.

The acceleration of protons driven by a high-intensity laser is comprehensively investigated via control of the target density by using ASE just before the time of the main-laser interaction. Two cases were investigated for which the ASE intensity differed by three orders of magnitude: In the low contrast case the beam centre for higher energy protons is shifted closer to the laser-propagation direction of 45, while the center of lower-energy beam remains near the target normal direction. Particle-in-cell simulations reveal that the characteristic proton acceleration is due to the quasistatic magnetic field on the target rear side with the magnetic pressure sustaining a charge separation electrostatic field.

These protons were used to induce a nuclear reaction of B(p,n)C. A total activity of 11.1 Bq was created after 60-shot laser irradiation. The possibility of thin layer activation (TLA) using a high-intensity ultra-short pulsed laser is discussed.

ASE pedestal duration is controlled by a fast electro-optic pulse slicer where the risetime is estimated to be 130 ps. We demonstrate a new correlated spectral technique for determining this risetime using a stretched, frequency chirped pulse.
