In this study, we present a wireless, battery-free, skin-interfaced microfluidic system that combines lateral flow immunoassay for sweat cortisol assay, fluorometric imaging of glucose and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) assays, and digital tracking of sweat rate using electrodes that measure skin galvanic response. Systematic benchtop testing and on-body field studies on human subjects exercising in a gym environment highlight the key multifunctional features of this platform in tracking the biochemical correlates of physical stress.

Excretion of sweat from eccrine glands is a dynamic physiological process that varies with body position, activity level, and health status. Information content embodied in sweat rate and chemistry can be used to assess health status and athletic performance. This paper presents a thin, miniaturized, skin-interfaced microfluidic technology that includes a reusable, battery-free electronics module for measuring sweat conductivity and rate in real-time using wireless power from and data communication with capabilities in near field communications (NFC). Systematic studies of these combined microfluidic/electronic systems, accurate correlations of measurements performed with them to those of laboratory standard instrumentation, and field tests on human subjects establish the key operational features and their utility in sweat analytics.

In Japan, the likelihood of uplift/erosion on repository performance and waste isolation can be typically greatly reduced or excluded by careful siting, however, the inability to completely exclude the uplift/erosion scenario may require an analysis of the consequences of such a scenario. For this purpose, an assessment approach has been developed to more realistically treat the effect of uplift/erosion for a hypothetical repository located in sedimentary host rock. A key advantage to this approach is the extrapolation of the geohistory of modern analogue sites to develop credible initial inputs for future volunteer sites that may be poorly characterized at the initial stages of site investigation. In addition, the approach provides a systematic basis for bounding the range of possible evolution in thermal-hydrological-mechanical-chemical conditions of a repository experiencing different uplift/ erosion rates.

Bainitic transformation behavior studied by simultaneous neutron diffraction and dilatometric measurement

Bainitic transformation behavior has firstly been observed using in situ neutron diffraction with an angular dispersive method for a hard bainite steel. The dilatometric measurement was carried out simultaneously with the neutron experiment where changes in (1 1 1) austenite and (1 1 0) ferrite diffraction profiles were monitored during heating, cooling and holding at a transformation temperature. The neutron experiments results agree with dilatometry results. They appear to have found that the austenite peak broadening occurs after the onset of bainitic transformation but not before.

In this study, as a part of the joint research between JAEA and KAERI, the comprehensive sensitivity analysis method developed by JAEA was applied to a Korean HLW disposal concept that spent fuel will be directly disposed in a rock. The purpose of this study was to confirm whether the threshold values of near-filed parameters yielding a "successful condition" where maximum dose does not exceed a target value can be extracted with regard to direct disposal concept of spent fuel. As a result, the successful conditions composed of near-field parameters were illustrated under different conservative conditions of the natural barrier. In conclusion, the comprehensive sensitivity analysis method can be applied to extraction of a successful condition composed of near-field parameters for direct disposal concept of spent fuel. Such an approach will provide useful information for scenario analysis and offer insights into construction of a robust system for direct disposal concept of spent fuel.

Low energy vibrational excitations characteristic of superionic glass

The mechanism of high ionic conductivity in superionic glass constitute an unsolved problem in the field of science.Here we performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements of superionic glass system (AgI)$$_{x}$$(Ag$$_{2}$$S)$$_{x}$$(AgPO$$_{3}$$)$$_{1-2x}$$ by using MARI spectrometer at ISIS, and found that the $$Q$$-dependence of inelastic intensity in the energy region from 1 to 3 meV of superionic phase glass shows an excess intensity above $$Q$$=1.8$AA$^{-1}$$ compared with insulator phase one. Similar phenomena were also observed in another superionic glass (AgI)$$_{0.5}$$(AgPO$$_{3}$$)$$_{0.5}$$ by using NEAT spectrometer at HMI with high resolution measurement. These results clearly suggest peculiar low energy vibrational excitations should be universal features of superionic glass.

In situ crystallographic observation of dynamic ferrite transformation evolution during hot deformation of low alloy steels

Deformation induced ferrite transformation related to microstructure refinement has attracted wide attention. However, the in situ crystallographic evolution studies have not been carried out. In this paper, the deformation induced ferrite transformation at two different strain rates was carried out to compare that during isothermal holding without deformation and the effects of hot deformation and strain rate on the dynamic transformation evolution was investigated. The neutron diffraction experiments confirmed that the deformation induced ferrite transformations could appear not only in the austenite region, but also in the austenite-ferrite dual phase region. It was found that the low temperature deformation was more effective than the high temperature to promote the ferrite transformation until a critical strain, and then the accelerating effect was weakened due to the increment of austenite carbon concentration and the appearance of ferrite dynamic recrystallization.
