An Accelerator Driven System (ADS) for waste transmutation investigated in JAEA employs lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) as a neutron production target material and coolant. The neutrons are to be produced via the spallation with 1.5 GeV proton beam injection. As materials irradiation data are important for ADS development, JAEA plans to construct an irradiation facility with LBE neutron production target in J-PARC. There are many technical issues on LBE for practical use. In JAEA, various R&Ds are being carried out. Concerning corrosion study, conditioning operation and functional tests of OLLOCHI started. Oxygen concentration control technology has also developing. In the large scale LBE loop experiment, the operation for steady state and transient experiments was performed by using IMMORTAL. In the area of instrument, development of ultrasonic flow meter and freeze seal valve are progressing as a key technology for the LBE loop system. Investigation of behavior of impurities in LBE, which is important for design of the irradiation facility, started. In this paper, the status of the LBE studies and experimental plan will be presented.

Neutral beam (NB) injectors for JT-60 Super Advanced (JT-60SA) have been designed and developed. Twelve positive-ion-based and one negative-ion-based NB injectors are allocated to inject 30 MW D$$^{0}$$ beams in total for 100 s. Each of the positive-ion-based NB injector is designed to inject 1.7 MW for 100s at 85 keV. A part of the power supplies and magnetic shield utilized on JT-60U are upgraded and reused on JT-60SA. To realize the negative-ion-based NB injector for JT-60SA where the injection of 500 keV, 10 MW D$$^{0}$$ beams for 100s is required, R&Ds of the negative ion source have been carried out. High-energy negative ion beams of 490-500 keV have been successfully produced at a beam current of 1-2.8 A through 20% of the total ion extraction area, by improving voltage holding capability of the ion source. This is the first demonstration of a high-current negative ion acceleration of $$>$$1 A to 500 keV. The design of the power supplies and the beamline is also in progress. The procurement of the acceleration power supply starts in 2010.

Hydrogen negative ion beams of 490 keV, 3 A and 510 keV, 1 A have been successfully produced in the JT-60 negative ion source with three acceleration stages. These successful productions of the high-energy beams at high current have been achieved by overcoming the most critical issue, i.e., a poor voltage holding of the large negative ion sources with the grids of 2 m$$^{2}$$ for JT-60SA and ITER. To improve voltage holding capability, the breakdown voltages for the large grids was examined for the first time. It was found that a vacuum insulation distance for the large grids was 6-7 times longer than that for the small-area grid (0.02 m$$^{2}$$). From this result, the gap lengths between the grids were tuned in the JT-60 negative ion source. The modification of the ion source also realized a significant stabilization of voltage holding and a short conditioning time. These results suggest a practical use of the large negative ion sources in JT-60SA and ITER.

We have developed a newly designed Fermi chopper for MLF/BL01 4SEASONS, and has been open for users since March 2015. It was found that the gain factor achieved in the low-energy region is more than 10, thus, we succeeded to greatly improve the measurement efficiency of 4SEASONS. In this presentation we will show the details of both specification and design for a newly-developed Fermi chopper.

The chopper spectrometer 4SEASONS at J-PARC MLF had used a Fermi chopper borrowed from the SNS facility until 2014. A new Fermi chopper which reviewed the design of the slit package has recently started operation. As a result, we have succeeded in achieving the intensity gain up of to several tens of times in the low-energy region. In this presentation we will report the details of spec and design of a new Fermi chopper.

AMATERAS is a cold-neutron multi disk-chopper spectrometer at Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) in J-PARC. The spectrometer has had the first neutron beam in May 2009 and had the first user in December 2009. The user program on AMATERAS is running successfully for 5 years. In this presentation, we will present the current status of AMATERAS together with ideas of future upgrade plans.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) proposes to reduce the minor actinides by Partitioning and Transmutation Technology using Accelerator-driven system (ADS). To realize ADS, JAEA plans to locate Lead-Bismuth Eutectic alloy (LBE) spallation target in J-PARC. LBE spallation target will be used to solve technical issues for ADS design by preparing irradiation database. The 400 MeV - 250 kW proton beam can be used for ADS studies. The spallation target is optimized by thermal-hydraulic analysis and structural analysis to increase proton/neutron irradiation of ADS materials by sharply focused proton beam injection. The studies for elemental technologies such as a fully-remote target exchange procedure and freeze-sealed drain valve system are also performed and integrated into the design of LBE target. The latest design of the J-PARC LBE spallation target system will be presented.
