For Ca, a ray transition was measured to be 1456(12) keV, while for Ca an indication for a transition was observed at 1115(34) keV. Both transitions were tentatively assigned as the decays. A shell-model calculation in a wide model space with a marginally modified effective nucleon-nucleon interaction depicts excellent agreement with experiment for level energies, two-neutron separation energies, and reaction cross sections, corroborating the formation of a new nuclear shell above the N = 34 shell. Its constituents, the and orbitals, are almost degenerate. This degeneracy precludes the possibility for a doubly magic Ca and potentially drives the dripline of Ca isotopes to Ca or even beyond.

The neutron knockout reaction and inelastic proton scattering were applied for V while the neutron knock-out reaction provided the data for V. Four and five new transitions were determined for V and V, respectively. Based on the comparison to our shell-model calculations using the Lenzi-Nowacki-Poves-Sieja (LNPS) interaction, three of the observed rays for each isotope could be placed in the level scheme and assigned to the decay of the first 11/2 and 9/2 levels. The (,) excitation cross sections for V were analyzed by the coupled-channels formalism assuming quadrupole plus hexadecapole deformations. Due to the role of the hexadecapole deformation, V could not be unambiguously placed on the island of inversion.

The momentum distributions corresponding to the removal of and neutrons were measured. The cross sections are consistent with a shell closure at the neutron number , found as strong as at and in Ca isotopes from the same observables. The analysis of the momentum distributions leads to a difference of the root-mean-square radii of the neutron and orbitals of 0.61(23) fm, in agreement with the modified-shell-model prediction of 0.7 fm suggesting that the large root-mean-square radius of the orbital in neutron-rich Ca isotopes is responsible for the unexpected linear increase of the charge radius with the neutron number.

The existing timing system, which was developed during the construction period of the-PARC, has been working without major issues since 2006. After a decade of operation, the optical modules, which are key components for signal transfer, were discontinued already. Thus, the next-generation timing system for the J-PARC is under development. The new system is designed to be compatible with the existing system in terms of the operating principle. The new system utilizes modern high speed signal communication for the transfer of the clock, trigger, and type code. We present the system configuration of the next-generation timing system and current status.

Populated states of Ca were investigated through -ray and invariant-mass spectroscopy. Level energies were calculated from the nuclear shell model employing a phenomenological inter-nucleon interaction. Theoretical cross sections to states were calculated from distorted-wave impulse approximation estimates multiplied by the shell model spectroscopic factors. Despite the calculations showing a significant amplitude of excited neutron configurations in the ground-state of Sc, valence proton removals populated predominantly the ground-state of Ca. This counter-intuitive result is attributed to pairing effects leading to a dominance of the ground-state spectroscopic factor. Owing to the ubiquity of the pairing interaction, this argument should be generally applicable to direct knockout reactions from odd-even to even-even nuclei.

The energies of the two previously reported transitions have been confirmed, and five additional states are presented for the first time, including a candidate for a 3 state. The level scheme built using coincidences was compared to shell-model calculations in the model space and to predictions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. Theoretical proton- and neutron-knockout cross sections suggest that two of the new transitions correspond to 2 states, while the previously proposed 4 state could also correspond to a 2 state.

MTCA (MicroTCA) is expected to be the next generation platform for advanced control in accelerators. MTCA has many advantages over the widely used VMEs, such as high speed, large data transfer capacity, and high maintainability with hot-swappable modules. After the application to the LLRF control system at KEK, MTCA has been used in many accelerators around the world, while it takes a long time for MTCA to spread to the accelerators in Japan. Recently, the number of large-scale adoptions such as the LLRF control system, for the J-PARC RCS has been increasing. In this article, we introduce a case study of MTCA adoption and discuss why MTCA has not been widely used in Japan. Also, the efforts for the future promotion of MTCA in Japan are reported.

Precise timing pulses from the timing system are necessary for acceleration of high intensity proton beams in the J-PARC accelerators. The existing timing system was developed during the construction period of the J-PARC. The system has been working well for more than ten years, however, the optical modules for the signal transfer from the central control building to the accelerators are discontinued already. Although we have spares of the optical devices, maintenance of the system will be difficult. Therefore, we are developing the next generation timing system for the J-PARC. We present the design of the system, preliminary test results, and future plans.

Appx. 10 ppb of rare earth elements, i.e., Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Er, Tm and Yb were doped to the sample groundwater collected from a packed sections in borehole drilled from 140 m depth experiment drift of Horonobe underground research laboratory (URL), Hokkaido, Japan. Then, that groundwater was sequentially filtrated by 0.2 micron pore filter, 10 kDa, 3 kDa and 1 kDa of nominal molecular weight limit (NMWL) ultrafilters by keeping inert condition. After that, the filtrate solutions were analyzed by ICP-MS to determine the concentrations of retained REEs at each filtration steps, while the used filters were analyzed by the neutron activation analysis (NAA) and TOF-SIMS element mapping to know the amount and chemical speciation of trapped fraction of the REEs on each filter. A remarkable relation between the retention ratios of REEs in the filtrate solutions and the ionic radius was observed, i.e., smaller rare earth element solves more in liquid phase under the Horonobe groundwater condition. NAA and TOF-SIMS analyses revealed that certain portions of REEs were trapped by 0.2 micron pore filters as rare earth phosphates which corresponded with the predicted predominant species by a chemical equilibrium calculation for the Horonobe groundwater condition, while small portions of colloidal REEs were trapped by 10 kDa and 3 kDa NMWL ultrafilters. The result suggested that phosphate anion plays an important role in the chemical behavior of REEs in saline (seawater based) groundwater, which could be referred for the prediction of migration behavior of trivalent actinide released from the repository of radioactive waste in far future.

The organic solutions examined were nitrobenzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, benzonitrile, acetophenone and 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether. Irrespective of the type of organic solutions, G of UO, NpO and PuO were nearly equal to each other and slightly larger than that of Mg. The G of NpO was extraordinary large compared with those of ordinary monovalent cations. The dependence of G of AnO on the type of organic solutions was similar to that of H or Mg. The G of An and An were also discussed briefly.

A high performance electrochemical solvent extraction method was developed based on the quantitative transfer of ions from an aqueous, W, to an organic solution, O. It was realized by applying a potential difference between W and O. The cell was composed of a porous Teflon tube immersed with O, a Ag wire inserted into the tube, a Pt wire placed outside the tube. When W containing ions was forced to flow through the narrow gap between the tube and Ag wire, and potential was applied, a very rapid quantitative ion transfer was attained. When O containing extractant, more than 99% of U(VI) in W was extracted during the residence (e.g., 40 s) in the cell. The fundamental feature of the extraction system was investigated, taking into account the application of the system to the extraction of actinide, lanthanide, Sr or Cs ions. The use of a column electrode system connected before the extraction system was examined in order to adjust the oxidation state of the element to that desired.

J-PARC is a large scale facility of the proton accelerators for the multi-purpose of scientific researches in Japan. This facility consists of three accelerators and three experimental stations. Now, J-PARC is under construction, and LINAC is operated for one year, 3GeV synchrotron has just started the commissioning in this October the 1st. The completion of this facility will be next summer. The control system of accelerators established fundamental performance for the initial commissioning. The most important requirement to the control system of this facility is to minimize the activation of accelerator devices. In this paper, we show that the performances of each layer of this control system have been achieved in the initial stage.

We found that the membranes possessed one-dimensional straight proton conducting pathways parallel to the ion-beam incident axis. Such restricted structures probably led to less water uptake and lower methanol permeability compared to a commercially-available Nafion membrane.
