Dry cleaning process test for fuel assembly of fast reactor plant system, 1; Pilot scale test for fuel pin bundle

Kudo, Hideyuki*; Otani, Yuichi*; Hara, Masahide*; Kato, Atsushi; Ishikawa, Nobuyuki; Otaka, Masahiko; Nagai, Keiichi; Saito, Junichi; Ara, Kuniaki; Ide, Akihiro*

Proceedings of 2019 International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP 2019) (Internet), 10 Pages, 2019/05

A next generation SFR in Japan has adopted an advanced dry cleaning system which consists of the argon gas blowing process to reduce the amount of metallic residual sodium remaining on spent fuel assemblies. This paper describes experimental and analytical work focusing on the amount of residual sodium remaining on a fuel pin bundle before and after the argon gas blowing process. The experiments were conducted using a sodium test loop and a short specimen consisting of a 7 pin bundle. The effects of the blowing gas velocity and the blowing time were quantitatively analyzed in the experiments. On the basis of these experimental results, evaluation models predicting the amount of the residual sodium were constructed.

Dry cleaning process test for fuel assembly of fast reactor plant system, 2; Laboratory scale test for fuel assembly and evaluation of the amount of residual sodium

Ide, Akihiro*; Kudo, Hideyuki*; Inuzuka, Taisuke*; Hara, Masahide*; Kato, Atsushi; Ishikawa, Nobuyuki; Otaka, Masahiko; Nagai, Keiichi; Saito, Junichi; Ara, Kuniaki

Proceedings of 2019 International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP 2019) (Internet), 10 Pages, 2019/05

A next generation SFR in Japan has adopted an advanced dry cleaning system which consists of the following process of argon gas blowing to reduce the amount of metallic sodium, moist argon gas blowing to deactivate the residual sodium, and direct storage in the SFP without using storage containers. This three-step process increases economic competitiveness and reduces waste products. In this Research and Development work, the amount of residual sodium and performance of the dry cleaning process were investigated. This paper describes experimental and analytical work for all parts of a fuel assembly except for a fuel pin bundle.

To investigate the mechanism of structural changes of water and polymer networks with drying and swelling, we measured the Raman spectra of a physically cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel synthesized using the freezing thawing method. On the basis of the dependence of the frequency shifts on the PVA concentration of the original solution, it was found that the structure of the polymer network in the reswollen hydrogel becomes inhomogeneous due to shrinkage of the polymer network with drying. Furthermore, to investigate the effects of the cross-linking structure on the drying process, these results were compared with those of a chemically cross-linked PVA hydrogel synthesized using glutaraldehyde as a cross-linker. The results show that the structures of the polymer network and water change with the gel preparation process, cross-linking method, and drying and reswelling processes.

JAEA-Review-2012-007.pdf:36.72MB

There are many LWRs which have been operated for more than 20 years in Japan and it is expected that technique corresponding to aging plants are necessary established for safety operation in LWRs. A lot of troubles related to SCC are reported and many investigations are concerned with SCC mechanism and technical evaluation. In this paper, those research data were collected as possible widely and reviewed systematically. Current circumstances concerned with SCC in LWRs were reviewed specifically as follows: SCC incidents, SCC evaluation methods for crack initiation and propagation, the investigations concerned with SCC mechanism and monitoring technique for corrosive environment. Influences with reactor types (BWR, PWR), materials (stainless steels, Ni alloys) and SCC evaluating methods (laboratories and actual plants) were summarized as graphs and tables easy to understand in common/difference points concerned with SCC. From these arranged results, future themes were considered and remarked SCC phenomenon was summarized in actual plants. As for SCC evaluations under the accelerate conditions in the laboratory test, it was suggested that a computational prediction and modeling including statistical technique and microscopic analysis in crack initiation were important. Furthermore it was suggested that monitoring techniques predicting SCC initiation and grasping plant circumstance in operation and feasibility in actual plants were important.

Probabilistic safety assessment of flammable gas leakage in the HTTR-IS hydrogen production plant

Kudo, Junichi*; Sakaba, Nariaki; Takahashi, Makoto*; Wakabayashi, Toshio*

Nihon Genshiryoku Gakkai Wabun Rombunshi, 9(4), p.360 - 367, 2010/12

The HTTR-IS system is one of the plants producing hydrogen with nuclear power. Such a system has high safety requirements. One of the safety studies to be conducted is the probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) study for concerned hydrogen explosion, which was not studied previously. Therefore, this study is conducted for the preliminary PSA of flammable gas leakage in the HTTR-IS system. First, a master logic diagram (MLD) was developed to identify initiating events. After identifying initiating events, event tree analysis (ETA) and fault tree analysis (FTA) were performed to quantify the average frequency of an accident. The initial result of the PSA shows that the nominal frequency of explosion is 2.5$$times$$10$$^{-4}$$ 1/y. This frequency is higher than the criterion defined in this paper and unacceptable. Installments of additional components are investigated in order to reduce frequency. As a result, the average frequency of explosion is decreased to 7.9$$times$$10$$^{-7}$$ 1/y.

Proceedings of International Conference on Accelerator and Large Experimental Physics Control Systems (ICALEPCS '07) (CD-ROM), p.62 - 64, 2007/10

J-PARC is a large scale facility of the proton accelerators for the multi-purpose of scientific researches in Japan. This facility consists of three accelerators and three experimental stations. Now, J-PARC is under construction, and LINAC is operated for one year, 3GeV synchrotron has just started the commissioning in this October the 1st. The completion of this facility will be next summer. The control system of accelerators established fundamental performance for the initial commissioning. The most important requirement to the control system of this facility is to minimize the activation of accelerator devices. In this paper, we show that the performances of each layer of this control system have been achieved in the initial stage.

(La,Sr,Ca)$$_{14}$$Cu$$_{24}$$O$$_{41}$$ is an attractive material in connection with high-$$T_{rm c}$$ superconductivity because Sr$$_{0.4}$$Ca$$_{13.6}$$Cu$$_{24}$$O$$_{41}$$ becomes a superconductor under high pressure without the CuO$$_2$$ planes. We present RIXS at the Cu $$K$$-edge of (La,Sr,Ca)$$_{14}$$Cu$$_{24}$$O$$_{41}$$ focusing on the momentum dependence of interband excitation across the Mott gap and the intraband excitation below the gap as a function of hole concentration. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical predictions.
