Inspection in opaque liquid metal coolant is one of important issues for sodium-cooled fast reactors. To facilitate operations and maintenance activities, various under sodium viewers (USVs), including horizontal USVs for obstacle detection for a long distance and imaging USVs for a short and middle distance imaging, have been developed in several research institutes and countries. In this study, an imaging USV for a middle distance, approximately 1 m, has been developed. The USV in this study adopts an optical receiving system which measures the vibration displacement of diaphragm by using a laser as a receiving sensor. This study mainly focuses on the sensitivity improvement for a transmission sensor and the receiving sensor. In addition, an imaging experiment in the water was conducted using the new transmission sensor and receiving sensor. The experimental results showed that the newly developed USV sensors can make higher resolution images of a target than the previous sensors.

Numerical simulations for a T-pipe consisting of a rectangular duct for main stream and a circular pipe for branch stream were performed to investigate relation between large-scale eddy structure formation in the mixing area and temperature fluctuation generation on the wall. Moreover, the numerical simulation to investigate thermal interaction between fluid and structure were conducted. Experimental results of temperatures at 2 mm from the wall in fluid, on the wall and at 3 mm inside from the wall in structure were compared with those of the numerical results. The numerical results indicate that the fluid-structure thermal interaction is necessarily considered for thermal fatigue estimation in the thermal striping phenomena.

In this study, a simplified T-junction piping system consisting of a rectangular duct for main stream and a circular pipe for branch stream was used as the test section in the water experiment. Time series of instantaneous two-dimensional velocity fields were obtained by PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) in the mixing area. And fluid temperature fluctuations at several positions at 2 mm inside from the wall were also measured by thermo-couples. Focusing on the frequency characteristics, formation of eddy structure in the mixing area and mutual relation between the temperature fluctuation generation and the flow structure were discussed.

Inspection technique in opaque liquid metal coolant is one of the important issues for safety warranty of Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor (LMFBR) core. To facilitate operations and maintenance activities, an under sodium viewer (USV) has been developed. In this study, the receiving sensitivity of the USV was increased by adopting the structure which can reduce the noise in the receiving sensor. In addition, it was confirmed that the developed sensor has the targeted performance.
