The disposal of radioactive waste from the research facility need to calculate from the radioactivity concentration that based on variously nuclear fuels and materials. In Japan Atomic Energy Agency Oarai Research and Development Institute, the study on considering disposal is being advanced among the facilities which generate radioactive waste as well as the facilities which process radioactive waste. This report summarizes a study result in FY2020 about the evaluation method to determine the radioactivity concentration in radioactive waste on Oarai Research and Development Institute.

Changes of stress state due to the 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake triggered normal displacements of faults that have not been regarded as active faults. In this study, geological survey for normal faults in coastal region was conducted in order to understand the mechanism of reactivation of inactive faults triggered by megathrust earthquakes. This report includes topographical and geological data obtained by field works in and around the Kawaminami Fault in northern margin of the Miyazaki Plain, with results of microscopic examination, analyses of X-ray diffraction and particle size distribution for clayey samples, analyses of tephra and plant opal, and radiocarbon dating.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been developing to design trench disposal facility with impermeable layers in order to dispose of miscellaneous waste. Geomembrane liners have a function that prevent seepage of leachant and collect the leachant. However, the geomembrane liners do not necessarily provide the expected performance due to damage generated when heavy equipment contacts with the liner. Therefore, we studied the impermeable layers having high performance of preventing seepage of leachant including radioactivity taking into account characteristics of low permeable materials and effect of multiple layer structure. As results, we have evaluated that the composite layers composed by a drainage layer, geomembrane liners and a low permeable layer are most effective structure to prevent seepage of leachant. Taking into account disposal of waste including cesium, we also considered zeolite containing sheets for adsorption of cesium were installed in the impermeable layers.

The Miyazaki Plain, facing the Hyuga-nada, had been attacked repeatedly by historical tsunami events induced by the giant earthquakes centered in the Hyuga-nada or Nankai Trough. However, scientific studies concerning the tsunami events are still poor in this area. Disappearance of subsurface sediments due to fast uplift rates in the Miyazaki Plain is considered to make difficult to proceed such studies. This database shows the result of the study for Holocene sediments in the Miyazaki Plain in 2012, including chemical composition analysis of absorbed water, microfossil identification, description of tephra deposits and radiocarbon dating, as well as geological description of drilled cores. It is closely related to the study for the reactivation of coastal geological faults caused by the giant subduction zone earthquakes.

Disassembling technique of the driver fuel assembly irradiated in the experimental fast reactor JOYO has been established at Fuel Monitoring Facility in JAEA. This technique made it possible to remove the fuel pins from the driver fuel assembly without the fuel pin sectioning. After disassembling the fuel assembly, some selected fuel pins can be reassembled into the new irradiation vehicle for the continuous irradiation at JOYO. This technique enables us to obtain the irradiation data of high burn-up fuel and high neutron dose material.

These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. In July 2007, the Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan (NSC) formulated "Basic Policy for Safety Regulation Concerning Land Disposal of Low-Level Radioactive Waste (Interim Report)". "Classification of Scenarios into Three Types" and their "Standard Dose Values" were indicated in this report. In this study, some scenarios for safety assessment were developed as "Inadvertent Human Intrusion or Rare Natural Event Scenarios" based on the previous technical documents. The parameters were set up for dose calculation and the exposure doses were calculated. As the result, exposure doses in all cases were less than 10 mSv/y

This study was carried out the evaluation of exposure dose on "Less-likely Scenarios" according to "Basic Policy for Safety Regulation Concerning Land Disposal of Low-Level Radioactive Waste (Interim Report)" (In July 2007, the Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan). When the evaluation modeling was constructed, "Evaluation scenario" and "Fluctuating parameter" were simplified "Physical, chemical change of the disposal system according to the climatic variation and the tectonic movement" that was the event foreseen happening in the future to "Release coefficient from the disposal facilities of the nuclide", "Distribution coefficient of the natural barrier", "Velocity of the underground water", and "Distance of the transfer path". As the result, exposure doses in all cases for "Less-likely scenarios" were less than 300

In this study, some scenarios for safety assessments were developed. According to each developed scenario, the parameters were set up for dose calculation. Calculated results were analyzed and summarized from the viewpoints of effects of radionuclide migration parameters such as release coefficient, distribution coefficient, ground water velocity and migration distance. Dose more than 10
Sv/y was calculated in some cases. Increase of ground water velocity or decrease of distribution coefficient caused by sea water inflow into migration path influenced slightly on the dose excess. In case of rapid change of the parameters, severe influences on the dose excess were observed. But, it wasn't thought that this rapid change would happen actually. On the other hand, in case of linear assumption of parameter change from 10,000 y to 100,000 y, dose less than 10
Sv/y was calculated.

The Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) conducts researches and developments related to Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) on the basis of Japan's pragmatic and progressive efforts toward peaceful use of atomic energy and non-proliferation with the goal of realizing a peaceful and safe world free from nuclear weapons. The Treaty aims for the establishment of a global verification regime comprising an International Monitoring System (IMS) and the JAERI has engaged in the following activities: construction and operation of the radionuclide monitoring stations at Okinawa (RN37) and Takasaki (RN38) and the certified radionuclide laboratory at Tokai (RL11) as specified in Annex 1 of CTBT Protocol, and preparation of the National Data Center at Tokai (JAERI NDC). Research activities of JAERI related to the CTBT verification regime are presented in the paper. The subjects of this presentation are (1) an overview of the CTBT verification regime, (2) construction and operation of RN37, RN38 and RL11, and (3) preparation of the JAERI NDC for radionuclide data.

In order to evaluate the impact of microorganism by COLFRAC, which simulates colloid-facilitated contaminant migration, the microorganism - radionuclide sorption data and microbial films data in deep geological environment were surveyed. After the survey, the data conversion to be able to calculate the effect of them on performance assessment in COLFRAC has been undertaken. As the results of calculation by COLFRAC, the transport behavior of radionuclide may be enhanced, when radionuclide will be taken in the microorganism. Furthermore, the results indicated that the transport rate of radionuclide depends on microbial concentration.

This report describes research activities of the R & D Group for Non-Proliferation Technology related to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) verification regime. The main subjects of this report are (1) an overview of the CTBT verification regime, (2) preparation of the National Data Center for radionuclide data, (3) construction and operation of the radionuclide monitoring stations at Takasaki and Okinawa and the certified rarionuclide laboratory at Tokai in Japan. We have participated in an intercomparison test internationally organized for the certified laboratories and the test results are given here. Scientific application of the CTBT-related technologies to environmental researches is also depicted.

Multi-Radionuclide Removal System (MRRS) has been operating to decontaminate the contaminated water in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. MRRS consist of pretreatment facilities (Iron coprecipitation treatment facility and Carbonate precipitation treatment facility) and adsorption towers. This system is able to remove most of the radioactive materials except Tritium. However, Associated with a this process, the secondary radioactive wastes (slurry, spent adsorbent) were generated and stored temporary in the High Integrity Container (HIC). It is necessary to various properties investigation for the inventory evaluation and future disposal. Therefore, the carbonate slurry samples were transported from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station to our laboratories in Tokai-mura and analyzed. High concentration of Sr-90 (1.3

]) was determined in the sample by the radioactive measurement, it is inferred that the contaminated water has been concentrate. And small amount of

After the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, probability and scale of giant earthquakes in the sea off Japan have been re-examined. The Central Disaster Management Council of Japan proposed a source model of hypothetical Nankai trough giant earthquake including the Hyuganada region. Historical data show that the 1662 Hyuganada Earthquake caused tsunami inundating the offshore part of the Miyazaki City and subsidence of about 1m. Here we began first geological survey to examine the geological evidence showing such giant earthquake in the Miyazaki City. In this study, we identified the changes of the depositional environment indicating the regional subsidence due to the 1662 historical earthquake.

We consider that very low level waste slightly including chemical toxicity material among radioactive waste generated from research, industrial and medical facilities is disposed of in trench disposal facility which is equipped with impermeable layers. We studied the impermeable system which has high performance to prevent the radioactive material from leaching out of waste layer taking into account the combination of geomembrane liners and low permeable materials.
