We investigated successive phase transitions in SmBC
at
=37K and
=51K by means of resonant X-ray diffraction. Strong resonant diffraction signal is observed at the 101 reflection below
at the Sm
edge, whereas in the intermediate phase signals appear at incommensurate positions
=(1
,
,1) where
=0.13. Accordingly, the successive phase transitions in SmB
C
is found to be commensurate-to-incommensurate magnetic phase transitions.

Mott gap excitations in the optimally doped high- superconductor YBa
Cu
O
(
= 93 K) have been studied by the resonant inelastic X-ray scattering method. Anisotropic spectra in the
-plane are observed in a twin-free crystal. The excitation from the one-dimensional CuO chain is enhanced at 2 eV near the zone boundary of the
direction, while the excitation from the CuO
plane is broad at 1.5-4 eV and almost independent of the momentum transfer. Theoretical calculation based on the one-dimensional and two-dimensional Hubbard model reproduces the observed spectra when different values of the on-site Coulomb energy are assumed. The Mott gap of the CuO chain site is found to be much smaller than that of the CuO
plane site.

. The intraband and interband excitations across the Fermi energy are separated for the first time by tuning the experimental conditions properly to measure charge excitations at low energy. A dispersion relation with
-dependent width emerges clearly in the intraband excitation, while the intensity of the interband excitation is concentrated around 2 eV near the zone center. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical calculation of the RIXS spectra based on the Hubbard model.

-edge. A large resonant signal is observed below the N
el temperatures. The azimuth dependence in both
-
and
-
polarization channels establishes that the resonant signal has the symmetry of the magnetic dipole. This resonance with the band electrons is interpreted within a semi-localized model as an orbital polarization of the Ga
states induced through strong hybridization with U
valence level. These results demonstrate that resonant magnetic X-ray scattering at the anions, taken in combination with symmetry arguments, can be used to determine the configuration of the U
moments and provide information about the hybridization.

, which shows a metal-insulator transition, we found that temperature dependence of scattering intensity is different between two scattering vectors. It may reflects a anisotropic electronic structure which originates from the orbital degrees of freedom in manganese oxides.

) have been elucidated by using the resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) method. A doping effect in the strongly correlated electron systems has been observed for the first time. The scattering spectra show that a salient peak appears in low energies indicating the persistence of the Mott gap. At the same time, the energy gap is partly filled by doping holes and the spectral weight energy shifts toward lower energies. The excitation spectra show little change in the momentum space as is in undoped LaMnO
. On the other hand, the scattering intensities in the low energy excitations of
are anisotropic in temperature dependence, which indicates an anisotropy of magnetic interaction and underlying effect of the orbital.

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering studies on high- superconductors Nd
Ce
CuO
and YBa
Cu
O
are presented. In Nd
CuO
and YBa
Cu
O
, which are Mott insulators, an excitation across the Mott gap is observed around 2 eV. The spectral weight of this excitation shifts to higher energy with increasing the momentum transfer and the dispersion of the excitation is larger along the
direction than the
direction. An intraband excitation in the upper Hubbard band emerges in the spectra of electron-doped Nd
Ce
CuO
. As a function of the momentum transfer in the CuO
plane, the excitation shifts to higher energy up to 2-2.5 eV at the zone boundary, accompanied by an increase of the spectral width. On the other hand, excitations from two inequivalent Cu sites in hole-doped YBa
Cu
O
are distinguished by the momentum dependence and the Mott gap of the CuO chain site is found to be much smaller than that of the CuO
plane site.
