Two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnet Fe$$_3$$GeTe$$_2$$ (FGT) holds a great potential for applications in spintronic devices, due to its high Curie temperature, easy tunability, and excellent structural stability in air. In this study, we have performed high-pressure neutron powder diffraction (NPD) up to 5 GPa, to investigate the evolution of its structural and magnetic properties with hydrostatic pressure. The NPD data clearly reveal the robustness of the ferromagnetism in FGT, despite of an apparent suppression by hydrostatic pressure. As the pressure increases from 0 to 5 GPa, the Curie temperature is found to decrease monotonically from 225(5) K to 175(5) K, together with a dramatically suppressed ordered moment of Fe, which is well supported by the first-principles calculations. Although no pressure-driven structural phase transition is observed up to 5 GPa, quantitative analysis on the changes of bond lengths and bond angles indicate a significant modification of the exchange interactions, which accounts for the pressure-induced suppression of the ferromagnetism in FGT.

Radiation quality for determining biological effects is commonly linked to the microdosimetric quantity, especially dose-mean lineal energy y$$_{D}$$. Calculations of y$$_{D}$$ can be performed by sophisticated Monte Carlo track structure (MCTS) codes. The y$$_{D}$$ estimate depends on the type of the MCTS code and analysis model. This study focused on proton beams with 1 MeV-1 GeV, which are important in radiation protection, space applications, radiation therapy, etc., and compared the estimates of the y$$_{D}$$ in liquid water by various MCTS codes (PHITS, RITRACK, and Geant4-DNA) and analysis models (refined Xapsos model). The comparison results showed that good agreement with the refined Xapsos model and various MCTS codes can be attained at less than 10-20% level, and Q values by the analytic model are also in better agreement with MCTS simulation data. These findings conclude that the refined analytic model might be used as an alternative to time- and CPU-intensive MCTS simulations and advance practical calculations of radiation qualities and risk assessment.

Grain size independence of cryogenic strain recovery behavior in high-Zr $$beta$$-Ti alloy

A significant increase in the recovery strain of a high-Zr $$beta$$-Ti alloy from 2.25 % to 5.5 % when decreasing the deformation temperature from 300 K to 77 K is reported in this study. It is found that the super-elasticity of this alloy is independent of the $$beta$$-grain size at 77 K. The results reveal that a coarse-grained specimen exhibited approximately the same super-elasticity as its ultra-fine grain counterpart at 77 K. The relative easiness of deformation-induced martensitic transformation and dislocation slip was substantially changed at 77 K, with a strong suppression of dislocation slip, which overshadowed the effect of grain refinement on the super-elasticity.

In order to clarify the strength properties of Co-free maraging steel, ${it in situ}$ tensile experiment using high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction was performed. Diffraction profiles from the martensitic and austenitic phases were obtained, and their strength and width were observed to vary as loading. Analysis of the diffraction profiles showed that the content of martensite in the as-aged material decreased slowly at low stress levels and decreased rapidly at high stress levels. On the other hand, the austenite phase in the as-solution materials was significantly transformed the martensite phase as the stress increased. It was clarified to be responsible for their respective strength properties.

The ion hydration and association and hydrogen-bonded water structure in an aqueous 3 mol/kg RbCl solution were investigated at 298 K/0.1 MPa, 298 K/1 GPa, 523 K/1 GPa, and 523 K/4 GPa by neutron diffraction combined with EPSR methods. The second hydration layer of Rb$$^+$$ and Cl$$^-$$ becomes evident under elevated pressure and temperature conditions. The average oxygen coordination number of Rb$$^+$$ (Cl$$^-$$) in the first hydration layer increases from 6.3 (5.9) ambient pressure to 8.9 (9.1) at 4 GPa, while decreasing coordination distance from 0.290 nm (0.322 nm) to 0.288 nm (0.314 nm). The orientation of the water dipole in the first solvation shell of Rb$$^+$$ and a central water molecule is sensitive to pressure, but that in the first solvation shell of Cl$$^-$$ does not change very much. The number of contact-ion pairs Rb$$^+$$-Cl$$^-$$ decreases with elevated temperature and increases with elevated pressure. Water molecules are closely packed, and the tetrahedral hydrogen-bonded network of water molecules no longer exists in extreme conditions.

The HTR is a relatively simple Small Modular Reactor design featuring demonstrated robust passive and inherent safety. It responds to the needs of a very large and growing process heat market in most industrialized countries many of which pursue a stringent policy of reducing fossil fuel burn. The manuscript starts from historical developments. This article also highlights the most significant recent achievements of this technology internationally and explains its potential value in a modern energy economy beyond pure electricity generation. The article concludes with an outlook on work towards building demonstration plants, which are required to de-risk private investments and to incentivize deployment.
