Compared to conditions in other types of installations, cable insulation in nuclear reactors is exposed to mixed conditions (high temperatures, radiation, pressure, humidity, aggressive environments) and at the same time they must maintain their performance characteristics for a long time (about 40-50 years). As a result of irradiation to such conditions, the electrical properties of the cable insulation are degraded, which leads to an increase in current loss. This is because the charge is induced by radiation into the insulator. At the WWR-K reactor, studies were started on the radiation resistance of signal cables with two types of mineral insulation (MgO and Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$). As part of these studies, new experimental data will be obtained on the behavior of signal cables with mineral insulation of two types in mixed operating conditions (radiation field and high temperature). It is planned to accumulate fluence of fast neutrons $$sim$$ 10$$^{20}$$cm$$^{-2}$$ in cables. The irradiation temperature will be (500 $$pm$$ 50)$$^{circ}$$C). The study of the degradation of the electrical properties of the insulation of signal cables will be carried out in real time (in-situ). For this, a special design of the experimental device and a technique for in-reactor measurement of electrical characteristics were developed. This paper presents a sketch of the capsule design, the results of complex calculations for the development of the capsule design, the expected neutron fluences, the dpa in steel, the technique for in-reactor measurement of electrical characteristics, and a work plan for the future indicating the expected results. The cable irradiation time until the target neutron fluence is reached will be about 100 effective days. This research is funded by the International Scientific-Technical Center.

The layered perovskite PrBaCo$$_{2}$$O$$_{5.5}$$ demonstrates a strong negative thermal expansion (NTE) which holds potential for being fabricated into composites with zero thermal expansion. The NTE was found to be intimately associated with the spontaneous magnetic ordering, known as magneto-volume effect (MVE). Here we report with compelling evidences that the continuous-like MVE in PrBaCo$$_{2}$$O$$_{5.5}$$ is intrinsically of discontinuous character, originating from an magnetoelectric transition from an antiferromagnetic insulating large-volume (AFILV) phase to a ferromagnetic less-insulating small-volume (FLISV) phase. Furthermore, the magnetoelectric effect (ME) shows high sensitivity to multiple external stimuli such as temperature, carrier doping, hydrostatic pressure, magnetic field etc. In contrast to the well-known ME such as colossal magnetoresistance and multi-ferroic effect which involve symmetry breaking of crystal structure, the ME in the cobaltite is purely isostructural. Our discovery provides a new path way to realizing the ME as well as the NTE, which may find applications in new techniques.

Nagasaki sediments containing bomb-derived Pu provided a unique opportunity to explore the long term geochemical behavior of Pu. Through a combination of selective extractions and molecular characterization via electrospray ionization Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, we determined that 55 $$pm$$ 3% of the $$^{239,240}$$Pu was preferentially associated with more persistent organic matter compounds in Nagasaki sediments, particularly those natural organic matter (NOM) stabilized by Fe oxides. Other organic matter compounds served as a secondary sink of these $$^{239,240}$$Pu (31 $$pm$$ 2% on average), and less than 20% of the $$^{239,240}$$Pu was immobilized by inorganic mineral particles. While present long-term disposal and environmental remediation modeling assume that solubility limits and sorption to mineral surfaces control Pu subsurface mobility, our observations suggest that NOM undoubtedly plays an important role in sequestering Pu. Ignoring the role of NOM in controlling Pu fate and transport is not justified in most environmental systems.

Application of SiC as corrosion-resistive coating over graphite remains important task for HTGR. This study presents the results of chemical interaction of the SiC gradient coating over the high-density IG-110 graphite with water vapor in the temperature up to 1673 K. The experiments at 100 Pa of water vapor showed that the passive reaction caused to form SiO$$_{2}$$ film on the surface of SiC coating. Active corrosion of SiC in 1Pa of water vapor leads to deposits of various carbon composites on its surface.

Detailed nuclear analyses for the latest ITER NB system are required to ensure that NB design conforms to the nuclear regulations for the ITER building and licensing. A variety of nuclear analyses was started for ITER NB system including a tokamak building of 50m $$times$$ 35m $$times$$ 20m and outside the building by using a Monte Carlo code MCNP in 2009. MCNP geometry input data were successfully produced from simplified NB CAD data with the improved GEOMIT code, which automatically converts CAD data to MCNP geometry input data. We have performed calculations of the effective dose rates during DT operation and after shutdown, and activation of the NB components, etc.

In the present work, pulse radiolysis was used to demonstrate the oxidizing nature of various intermediates of $$N$$-AcMetNH$$_{2}$$ and $$N$$-AcMetOMe via the oxidation of tryptophan (Trp) in a free aqueous solution. The reaction was examined at different pH levels. Electron transfer processes involving Trp and the sulfur-containing three-electron-bonded intermediates were investigated. The results revealed that Trp-Met pairs can form very favorable redox couples in biological systems, which is consistent with earlier reports of more efficient and rapid intramolecular charge transfers in synthetic as well as natural peptides containing methionine (Met).

Free radical scavenging and antioxidant activities of four natural flavonoids, namely silybin, naringenin, naringin and hesperetin, have been studied using nanosecond pulse radiolysis techniques. The kinetics and mechanisms of the reactions of silybin and analogues with various oxidizing radicals have been investigated. Further, the transient species has been assigned and radical scavenging rate constants have also been measured. Moreover, the structure-activity relationships (SAR) between chemical structures of the flavonoids and their radical scavenging activities are further analyzed by theoretical calculation. Combined our previous observation of the fast reparation of DNA damage and efficient DNA protection against radiation damage in vitro, it can be confirmed that test flavonoids are promising molecules to be used for their potential antioxidant properties.

3-Nitrotyrosine (3-NT) has been reported as an important biomarker of oxidative stress and potential source of reactive oxygen species (ROSs). In this work, the UV-visible absorption spectra of the transients formed by hydrated electron (e$$_{rm aq}$$$$^{-}$$) reacting with 3-NT and its derivatives were investigated, the spectra showed many characteristics of aromatic nitro anion radical. The reaction rate constants of e$$_{rm aq}$$$$^{-}$$ reacting with 3-NT, N-acetyl-3-nitrotyrosine ethyl ester (NANTE) and nitrotyrosine-containing peptide Gly-nitroTyr-Gly at neutral pH were determined, respectively, which were almost two orders of magnitude higher than that of tyrosine and tyrosine-containing peptides. The pH-dependence of e$$_{rm aq}$$$$^{-}$$ decay rate constants in presence of 3-NT was also studied.

The absorption spectra of Br$$_{2}$$$$^{.-}$$ and Br$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$ in aqueous solutions are investigated by pulse radiolysis techniques from room temperature to 380 and 350$$^{circ}$$C, respectively. The weak temperature effect on the absorption spectra of Br$$_{2}$$$$^{.-}$$ and Br$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$ is because in these two systems, the transition occurs between two valence states. We performed classical dynamics of hydrated Br$$^{-}$$ system at 20 and 300$$^{circ}$$C under pressure of 25 MPa. This shows that the first water shell is strongly bound to the anion whatever the temperature. The first two water shells form a cavity of a roughly spherical shape around the anion. By TDDFT method, we calculated the absorption spectra of hydrated Br$$^{-}$$ at two temperatures and we compared the results with the experimental data.

The absorption spectra of solvated electrons in various alcohols were measured at different temperatures using pulse radiolysis technique, and then compared with currently available experimental data on the temperature dependent energy of absorption maximum $$E$$$$_{rm max}$$ of solvated electrons in monohydric alcohols, diols and triol. $$E$$$$_{rm max}$$ is larger in those alcohols having more OH groups at all the temperatures. The molecular structure effect, including OH numbers, OH position and carbon chain length, are investigated. For the primary alcohols with same OH group number and position, the temperature coefficient increases with increasing chain length. For the alcohols with same chain length and OH numbers, the temperature coefficient is larger for the symmetric alcohols than the asymmetric ones.
