A quasifree ($$p$$,$$pn$$) experiment was performed to study the structure of the Borromean nucleus $$^{17}$$B, which had long been considered to have a neutron halo. By analyzing the momentum distributions and exclusive cross sections, we obtained the spectroscopic factors for $$1s_{1/2}$$ and $$0d_{5/2}$$ orbitals, and a surprisingly small percentage of 9(2)% was determined for $$1s_{1/2}$$. Our finding of such a small $$1s_{1/2}$$ component and the halo features reported in prior experiments can be explained by the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum, revealing a definite but not dominant neutron halo in $$^{17}$$B. The present work gives the smallest $$s$$- or $$p$$-orbital component among known nuclei exhibiting halo features and implies that the dominant occupation of $$s$$ or $$p$$ orbitals is not a prerequisite for the occurrence of a neutron halo.

The structures of the neutron-rich $$^{69,71,73}$$Co isotopes were investigated via ($$p,2p$$) knockout reactions at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, RIKEN. Level schemes were reconstructed using the $$gamma-gamma$$ coincidence technique, with tentative spin-parity assignments based on the measured inclusive and exclusive cross sections. Comparison with shell-model calculations suggests coexistence of spherical and deformed shapes at low excitation energies in the $$^{69,71,73}$$Co isotopes.

The nuclear structure of the $$^{76}$$Ni nucleus was investigated by ($$p$$,$$2p$$) reaction using a NaI(Tl) array to detect the deexciting prompt $$gamma$$ rays. A new transition with an energy of 2227 keV was identified by $$gamma gamma$$ and $$gamma gamma gamma$$ coincidences. Our shell-model calculations using the Lenzi, Nowacki, Poves, and Sieja interaction produced good candidates for the experimental proton hole states in the observed energy region, and the theoretical cross sections showed good agreement with the experimental values. Although we could not assign all the experimental states to the theoretical ones unambiguously, the results are consistent with a reasonably large Z = 28 shell gap for nickel isotopes in accordance with previous studies.

A benchmarking experiment was conducted to compare strain measurement facilities at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Twente. The critical current of a bronze-route Nb$$_3$$Sn ITER wire was measured as a function of axial strain and magnetic field in liquid helium temperature at both institutes. NIST used a Walters' spring strain device and University of Twente used a Pacman apparatus. The ITER bronze-route wire investigated had a very high irreversible strain limit and allowed the comparison of data over a wide range of applied strain from $$-1%$$ to $$+1%$$. A full account of the data analysis and comparisons will be presented. Measurement protocols and parameterization procedures will also be discussed.

We present a detailed Cu $$K$$-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of the Mott insulator La$$_2$$CuO$$_4$$ in the 1-7 eV energy loss range. As initially found for the high-temperature superconductor HgBa$$_2$$CuO$$_{4+delta}$$, the spectra exhibit a multiplet of weakly dispersive electron-hole excitations, which are revealed by utilizing the subtle dependence of the cross section on the incident photon energy. The close similarity between the fine structures for in-plane and out-of-plane polarizations is indicative of the central role played by the 1s core hole in inducing charge excitations within the CuO$$_2$$ planes. On the other hand, we observe a polarization dependence of the spectral weight, and careful analysis reveals two separate features near 2 eV that may be related to different charge-transfer processes. The polarization dependence indicates that the $$4p$$ electrons contribute significantly to the RIXS cross section.

Internal promoter characterization and expression of the ${it Deinococcus radiodurans pprI}$-${it folP}$ gene cluster

FEMS Microbiology Letters, 257(2), p.195 - 201, 2006/04

PprI is a general gene switch responsible for the extraordinary radioresistance of ${it Deinococcus radiodurans}$. From NCBI DNA sequence analysis, it was predicted that the translation start codon of the downstream ${it folP}$ gene overlaps the ${it pprI}$ stop codon, suggesting that these genes may form an operon. In this study, we show that a mutant containing an inserted sequence in ${it folP}$ does not grow unless folate is added to the medium, but is not affected in extreme radioresistance, whereasa ${it pprI}$ disruptant strain could grow in absence of folate. We now characterize the promoter of ${it pprI}$ by primer extension experiments. We show that expression of a ${it pprI}$-${it lacZ}$ fusion is constitutive and unaltered following ionizing radiation as is the production of the PprI protein. PprI protein is not expressed if its promoter is deleted and the transcription from the entire ${it pprI}$ promoter (containing a large region upstream of ${it pprI}$ gene) is essential for radioresistance of ${it D. radiodurans}$. However, the deletion of ${it pprI}$ promoter has no effect on the expression of the ${it folP}$-${it lacZ}$ fusion. Primer extension analysis of the ${it folP}$ promoter region shows that ${it folP}$ is transcribed from its own promoter located within the ${it pprI}$ structural gene. All these results do neither support the existence of a ${it pprI}$-${it folP}$ operon nor a regulatory role of FolP in ${it pprI}$ expression.

Application of CAD/MC interface code MCAM to generate MCNP model for nuclear analysis of ITER port limiter

no journal, ,

Port Limiter is one of important components of ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) with sophisticated geometry. A particular and accurate MCNP input model of ITER with Port Limiter for nuclear analysis was generated with MCAM (Monte Carlo particle Transport Calculated Automatic Modeling System). This paper introduces the detailed work flow of preprocessing of CAD engineering model and validates the MCNP model generated before the actual calculation. The successful application demonstrates that MCAM is capable of dramatically increasing the efficiency and accuracy to generate MC (Monte Carlo) models from CAD engineering models with complex geometry comparing with the traditional manual modeling method.
