The Japan Atomic Energy Agency is conducting a reactor modification project of the Static Experiment Critical Facility (STACY). In the modification, STACY is to be converted from a thermal reactor using solution fuel into that using fuel rods and light water moderator. Reactivity of the modified STACY core is controlled by the water level fed in the core tank as well as the present STACY. In order to verify the basic design of the water feed and drain system of the modified STACY, we constructed a mockup test apparatus with almost the same structure and specifications as the modified STACY. In the mockup test, performance checks were pursued regarding limitation of maximum flow of water feeding, adjustment of the flow rate of water feeding, stop of water feeding and others. This report describes the outline and results of the mock-up test of the water feed and drain system of the modified STACY.

The efficiency of inelastic neutron scattering measurements using a chopper spectrometer can be markedly improved by utilizing multiple incident energies (Multi-Ei method). However, in conventional chopper systems, optimization of the experimental condition for all incident energies is absolutely impossible. We developed a new Fermi chopper with a supermirror-coated slit package in order to overcome the problem and experimentally demonstrated that the full optimization of the experimental condition for multiple incident energies is nearly achieved.

AMATERAS is a cold-neutron disk-chopper spectrometer in MLF, J-PARC. The construction of main part of the spectrometer has been completed in spring of 2009. Soon after that, we have started the commissioning work on AMATERAS. The performance of AMATERAS has been examined by test experiments in the course of commissioning. In parallel to these works, we have started the user program on AMATERAS from December 2009 and we are getting scientific results from our spectrometer. In this presentation, we will report the current status of AMATERAS including the results of performance tests and some of examples of scientific outputs.

Evaluation of long-term geological evolution and its impact on groundwater flow is one of the major themes within the frame of Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory Project. For the purpose of development of a groundwater flow modeling methodology considering the effects of long-term geological evolution, following three items were studied: (1) Upgrade of SMS (Sequential Modeling System of geo-environmental evolution impact on groundwater flow) which was developed in 2006 FY; (2) Groundwater flow simulation under more realistic conditions of geological structures and hydrogeological conditions; and (3) Sensitivity study of geo-environmental evolution impacts on groundwater flow. The studies showed following suggestive results. (1) Development of a precise time step setting enabled to narrow the gaps in simulated head between time steps in which the model configuration used to deformed. (2) Several aspects have been found from studies on impact factors such as deposition on pore pressure, recharge rate and difference in density of saline groundwater. For evaluation of pore pressure induced by deposition, it is necessary to model the porosity and permeability variation considering the exceed pore pressure change. The setting of recharge rate during the Ice Age influence the characteristics of groundwater flow in coastal and hilly areas. The density of groundwater is not so influential as topological potential factors, however it is effective for the characteristics of groundwater flow in coastal area and intrusion of recharge water from ground surface. (3) The sensitivity study on faulting characteristics indicated that the two types of fault configuration and the hydraulic conductivity setting considered are not influential on the nature of groundwater flow above the depth of 500 m.

Malaria is the major cause of mortality and morbidity in the tropical and subtropical regions in the world. Our previous studies have shown that a series of partial peptides of a Plasmodium falciparum enolase have antigenic reactivity against patients' sera. In this paper, we wish to report nano-encapsulation of a synthetic antigen into bioabsorbable polymer particles and their releasing studies in vitro and in vivo.

Investigation of small scale sphere-pac fuel fabrication plant with external gelation process

In feasibility studies on commercialized FBR cycle system, comprehensive system investigation and properties evaluation for candidate FBR cycle systems have been implemented through view point of safety, economics, environmental burden reduction, non-proliferation resistivity, etc. As part of these studies, an investigation of small scale sphere-pac fuel fabrication plant with external gelation process was conducted. Until last fiscal year, equipment layout in cells and overall layout design of the 200t-HM/y scale fuel fabrication plant were conducted as well as schematical design studies on main equipments in gelation and reagent recovery processes of the plant. System property data concerning economics and environmental burden reduction of fuel fabrication plant was also acquired. In this fiscal year, the processes from vibropacking to fuel assemblies storage were added to the investigation range, and a conceptual design of whole fuel fabrication plant was studied as well as deepening the design study on main equipments. The conceptual design study was mainly conducted for small 50t-HM/y scale plant and a revising investigation was done for 200t-HM/y scale Plant. Taking the planed comparative evaluation with pellet fuel fabrication system into account, design of equipments which should be equivalent with pellet system, especially in post-vibropacking processes, were standardized in each system. Based on these design studies, system properties data concerning economics and environmental burden reduction of the plant was also acquired. In comparison with existing design, the cell height was lowered on condition that plug type pneumatic system was adopted and fuel fabrication building was downsized by applying rationalized layout design of pellet system to post-vibropacking processes. Reduction of reagent usage at gelation process and rationalization of sintering and O/M controlling processes etc., are foremost tasks.

In feasibility studies on commercialized FBR cycle system, a comprehensive system investigation and properties evaluation for candidate FBR cycle systems has been implemented through view point of safety, economics, environmental burden reduction, non-proliferation resistively, etc. As part of these studies, an investigation into rationalization of low decontamination pellet fuel fabrication plant configuration, and a study on characteristics evaluation techniques which focused on plant operating rate and waste generation was conducted. Until last fiscal year, a characteristics evaluation simulator which calculates plant operating rate and waste generation by input failure frequency data and periodic replacement data of every equipment or component was developed, and characteristics comparison between multiple fuel fabrication systems was done by applying it. Character of each fuel fabrication system, concerning system stability represented by waste generation, was shown and challenges in characteristics evaluation were made clear. In this fiscal year, programs of the simulator were modified to reflect plant designs correctly by describing campaign operation and batch treatment in the plant in order to make more quantitative calculation possible. On the other hand, in response to the challenges in the characteristics evaluation of last fiscal year, the system properties data based on a certain standard were acquired in conceptual design study and database were created with view of inter-system comparison. As the results of comparison between pellet system and sphere-pac system using simulator, it was suggested that system stability of pellet system is higher than sphere-pac system, and pellet system is also better in environmental burden reduction, because waste generation of sphere-pac system is apparently larger than pellet system.

In addition to this, 50t-HM/y scale plant was also schematically studied. In this fiscal year, a rationalization study on conceptual design of 50t-HM/y scale plant was conducted with main aim of economic improvement, and the 200t-HM/y scale plant design was revised based on the recent R&D progress. The system properties data concerning economics and environmental burden reduction of fuel fabrication plant was also acquired. In both case of the 50t-HM/y and 200t-HM/y scale plant, it was suggested that the equipment costs were reduced in several percentages because of reduction of maintenance equipments and cut in line number at the pellet fabrication process although granulation process for denitration converted powder and O/M control process for pellets were added. System properties data for comparative evaluation of candidate fuel fabrication systems was also prepared.

A Coherent positron beam for reflection high-energy positron diffraction

A 10 keV positron beam has been developed using coaxially symmetric electromagnetic lenses for reflection high-energy positron diffraction (RHEPD) experiments. The beam brightness is $$sim$$10$$^{7}$$ e$$^{+}$$/sec/cm$$^{2}$$/rad$$^{2}$$/V which is comparable to that obtained using brightness enhancement technique. The beam parallel and normal coherence lengths are over 100 ${AA}$ and 40 ${AA}$ , respectively, which are long enough to observe diffraction patterns associated with large surface super-structures. RHEPD patterns from a Si(111)-(7$$times$$7) reconstructed surface have been successfully observed with a much better quality than previously reported.

Observation of fast positron diffraction from a Si(111)7$$times$$7 surface

We so far discovered the total reflection and the first Bragg peak in reflection high-energy positron diffraction (RHEPD). However, the fractional order diffractions from reconstructed surfaces have been eluded from the observation. We therefore attempted to get RHEPD patterns from a Si-7$$times$$7 surface. Consequently, the 1/7, 2/7 and 3/7 diffraction rings due to Si(111)-7$$times$$7 reconstruction were clearly found in addition to the zeroth and the first Laue zones. The specular intensity was measured as a function of glancing angle. A small structure was found in the total reflection region. The small structure was attributed to the interference of positron wavefunction because of adatoms. However, the overall intensity profile was not well reproduced using a model already determined in the electron diffraction studies. To reproduce the obtained intensity profile, we may need to modify the vertical positions of the topmost surface and/or the absorption potential due to inelastic scattering processes.

Si(111)-7$$times$$7 surface probed by reflection high-energy positron diffraction

We report the first observation of reflection high-energy positron diffraction from a $$7times7$$ reconstructed Si(111) surface with an well-collimated 20 kV positron beam. The diffraction pattern clearly exhibited the 1/7-th to 3/7-th order Laue zones in addition to the zero-th and first Laue zones. From the dynamical calculation of the rocking curve in the total reflection region, the vertical position of adatom layer was determined to be 1.52 ${AA}$ relative to the stacking fault layer. This value is greater than that predicted in the first principles study suggesting a significant outward relaxation of adatoms.

Creation of new McStas components of moderators of JSNS for developing new pulse spectrometer

Moderator components of the McStas code have been created for the design of the spectrometers of JSNS. Three cryogenic moderators are adopted in JSNS, One is a coupled H$$_{2}$$ moderator for high intensity experiments and other two are decoupled H$$_{2}$$ with poisoned or unpoisoned for high resolution moderators. Monte Carlo simulations have turned out to be useful for design of neutron scattering instruments with high complexity. The software package McStas is selected for its own flexibility. Since the characteristics of neutron beams generated from moderators make influence on the performance of pulse neutron spectrometers, it is important to perform the simulation with neutron source component written precisely. Both Energy dependence of neutron spectrum and time structure of neutrons were calculated using NMTC/JAERI97 and MCNP4a codes.The simulation parameters, which describe the pulse shape as a function of time, are optimized. The creation of neutron source components viewed to coupled H$$_{2}$$ moderator and viewed to decoupled H$$_{2}$$ moderator of JSNS are reported.

In this paper, the creation of neutron source components for port No.16 viewed to coupled H$$_{2}$$ moderator and for port No.11 viewed to decoupled H$$_{2}$$ moderator of JSNS are reported.
