The first ionization potential (IP$$_1$$) yields information on valence electronic structure of an atom. IP$$_1$$ values of heavy actinides beyond einsteinium (Es, Z = 99), however, have not been determined experimentally so far due to the difficulty in obtaining these elements on scales of more than one atom at a time. Recently, we successfully measured IP$$_1$$ of lawrencium (Lr, Z = 103) using a surface ionization method. The result suggests that Lr has a loosely-bound electron in the outermost orbital. In contrast to Lr, nobelium (No, Z = 102) is expected to have the highest IP$$_1$$ among the actinide elements owing to its full-filled 5f and the 7s orbitals. In the present study, we have successfully determined IP$$_1$$ values of No as well as fermium (Fm, Z = 100) and mendelevium (Md, Z = 101) using the surface ionization method. The obtained results indicate that the IP$$_1$$ value of heavy actinoids would increase monotonically with filling electrons up in the 5f orbital like heavy lanthanoids.

We have developed a new setup to measure prompt fission $$gamma$$-ray spectra in neutron induced fission up to energies sufficient to reveal the structure associated with giant dipole resonances of fission fragments. The setup consists of multi-wire proportional counters, to detect both fission fragments in coincidence, and two large volume (101.6 mm in diameter and 127.0 mm in length) LaBr$$_{3}$$(Ce) scintillators, to measure the $$gamma$$-rays. The setup was used to obtain the prompt fission $$gamma$$-ray spectrum for thermal neutron induced fission of $$^{235}$$U at the PF1B cold-neutron beam facility of the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, France. We have successfully measured the $$gamma$$-ray spectrum up to energies of about 20 MeV, what extends the currently known $$gamma$$-ray spectrum limit to higher energies by approximately a factor of two.

Production cross sections of iodine, tellurium and antimony radionuclides in the 24-59 MeV $$^{7}$$Li + $$^{nat}$$Sn reaction have been measured by the conventional stacked foil technique with $$gamma$$-ray spectrometry. Excitation functions of the production cross sections were compared with a statistical model calculation. The contributions of complete and incomplete fusion in the production of observed radionuclides are discussed from the view points of production routes in the nuclide chart and decays for iodine, tellurium and antimony nuclides. The integral yields of $$^{123,124,125,126}$$I were deduced from the calculated excitation functions in the $$^{7}$$Li induced reactions on Sn isotopes in view of the production of medically important $$^{123,124}$$I. The results are discussed by comparing with literature values in the other reactions.

Fission-fragment mass distributions were measured for $$^{237-240}$$U, $$^{239-242}$$Np and $$^{241-244}$$Pu populated in the excitation-energy range from 10 to 60 MeV by multi-nucleon transfer channels in the reaction $$^{18}$$O + $$^{238}$$U at the JAEA tandem facility. Among them, the data for $$^{240}$$U and $$^{240,241,242}$$Np were observed for the first time. It was found that the mass distributions for all the studied nuclides maintain a double-humped shape up to the highest measured energy in contrast to expectations of predominantly symmetric fission due to the washing out of nuclear shell effects. From a comparison with the dynamical calculation based on the fluctuation-dissipation model, this behavior of the mass distributions was unambiguously attributed to the effect of multi-chance fission.

The measurement of the prompt fission $$gamma$$-ray spectrum (PFGS) is quite important to study the de-excitation process of neutron-rich fission fragments as well as to generate data required to design a generation-IV reactors. The PFGS measured for spontaneous fission of $$^{252}$$Cf shows a broad hump at energies more than 8 MeV. This is interpreted as a giant dipole resonance (GDR) of the fragments centered around 15 MeV. To understand how the GDR is populated in the fission process, one needs to measure the PFGS for the reactions with the mass yields different from the spontaneous fission of $$^{252}$$Cf, such as (n,f). The measurements of the PFGS for (n,f), however, are limited less than 9 MeV even in the recent experiment. This prompts us to make a new measurement to extend the know PFGS up to 20 MeV. The measurement has been carried out at the PF1B beam line of Institut Laue-Langevin. In this contribution we will present the results obtained the measurement.

We have installed new experimental apparatus to measure $$gamma$$ rays from highly excited states populated by the multi-nucleon transfer reactions with heavy-ion projectiles to determine the ($$n, gamma$$) cross sections by means of the surrogate reaction method. Apparatus consists of two anti-Compton LaBr$$_{3}$$(Ce) spectrometers to measure the $$gamma$$ rays and a Si $${Delta}E$$-$$E$$ detector system to detect outgoing projectile-like particles. Reactions of 153-MeV $$^{18}$$O beams with $$^{155}$$Gd and $$^{157}$$Gd targets were used to study the performance of apparatus. By using the LaBr$$_{3}$$(Ce) scintillators with relatively large volume (101.6 mm in diameter and 127 mm in length), we have successfully measured $$gamma$$ rays from the compound nuclei, which have excitation energy above neutron separation energy, populated by $$^{155}$$Gd($$^{18}$$O, $$^{16}$$O)$$^{157}$$Gd and $$^{157}$$Gd($$^{18}$$O, $$^{16}$$O)$$^{159}$$Gd two-neutron transfer reactions. The present study has demonstrated high capability of apparatus to measure the de-excitation $$gamma$$ rays in the compound nuclei produced by the multi-nucleon transfer reactions for determination of the ($$n, gamma$$) cross sections by using the surrogate reaction method.

Production cross sections of astatine isotopes $$^{207-211}$$At in the 29-57 MeV $$^7$$Li induced reaction with $$^{nat}$$Pb target have been measured by $$alpha$$- and $$gamma$$-ray spectrometry. Excitation functions of production cross sections have been compared with a statistical model calculation to study the reaction mechanism of $$^7$$Li + $$^{nat}$$Pb. Considerably small experimental cross sections of $$^{210}$$At and $$^{209}$$At compared with the calculation were clearly observed at incident energies higher than 44 MeV, indicating that the effects of breakup reaction play a role. A chemical separation of astatine from an irradiated lead target has been studied with a dry-distillation method. A complementary way to produce astatine isotopes has been developed.
