The in-plane magnetic structure of a layered system composed of polycrystalline grains smaller than the ferromagnetic exchange length was studied to elucidate the mechanism controlling the magnetic properties considerably different from the bulk using polarized neutron scattering under grazing incidence geometry. The measured result, together with quantitative analysis based on the distorted wave Born approximation, showed that the in-plane length of the area with uniform orientation of moments ranging from 0.5 to 1.1 $$mu$$m is not significantly varied during the process of demagnetization followed by remagnetization. The obtained behavior of moments is in good agreement with the two-dimensional random anisotropy model where coherent magnetization rotation is dominant.

The in-plane magnetic structure of Fe/Si multilayers with a polycrystalline grain size less than the ferromagnetic exchange length was investigated using polarized neutron off-specular scattering and grazing-incidence small-angle scattering measurements. These complementary measurements, each of them covering different length scales, together with the data analysis based on the distorted wave Born approximation, revealed lateral correlation in the fluctuating orientation of the magnetization in the layer on a sub-$$mu$$m length scale. The obtained in-plane magnetic structure is consistent with the random anisotropy model, i.e. competition between the exchange interactions between neighboring spins and the local magnetocrystalline anisotropy.

The in-plane magnetic structure of a layered system with a polycrystalline grain size less than the ferromagnetic exchange length was investigated using polarized neutron off-specular scattering and grazing incidence small angle scattering measurements to gain insight into the mechanism that controls the magnetic properties which are different from the bulk. These complementary measurements with different length scales and the data analysis based on the distorted wave Born approximation revealed the lateral correlation on a length scale of sub-$$mu$$m due to the fluctuating orientation of the magnetization in the layer. The in-plane magnetic structure indicated by these measurements is consistent with the random anisotropy model, i.e. competition between the exchange interactions between neighboring spins and the local magnetocrystalline anisotropy.

The J-PARC E56 experiment aims to search for sterile neutrinos at the J-PARC Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF). In order to examine the feasibility of the experiment, we measured the background rates of different detector candidate sites, which are located at the third floor of the MLF, using a detector consisting of plastic scintillators with a fiducial mass of 500 kg. The gammas and neutrons induced by the beam as well as the backgrounds from the cosmic rays were measured, and the results are described in this article.

Elucidation of the physical process leading to brittle failure in crystalline rocks and modeling its mechanism is of fundamental importance in evaluating the mechanical and hydraulic properties of EDZ. In this study, Granitic rock columns and plates with circular opening were subjected to triaxial compression and tension tests and measured elastic wave velocity and resisitivity to analyze nucleation and growth of microcracks. The following conclusions were important to note that: (1)During 90% to 100% stress levels to failure stress, it appear that cracks grew on their size but no cracks were nucleated. (2)It was demonstrated that crack tensor F$$_{ij}$$ was closely related the second rank tensor V$$_{ij}$$ which was determined by measuring elastic wave velocity on at least six direction. (3)The applicability of numerical analysis model based on the micromechanics was introduced. This could be considered the mechanism of the damage growth (microcrack growth) and the interaction among microcracks. (4)On the experiment of Granitic rock plates with circular opening, the process leading to brittle failure and damage growth of the rock around the opening were observed with AE monitoring and so on. (5)In order to evaluate the variety of permeability with the damage growth, it was showed that permeability tensor in terms of crack tensor gave the permeability change in stress history.

Anion-exchange behavior of Rf in HCl and HNO$$_{3}$$ solutions

We have investigated the sorption behavior of element 104 rutherfordium (Rf) on an anion exchange resin from HCl and HNO$$_{3}$$ solutions. In the HCl experiments, the distribution coefficients of Rf increase with an increase of HCl concentration from 7.0 M to 11.5 M, indicating that anionic species such as [Rf(OH)Cl$$_{5}$$]$$^{2-}$$ or [RfCl$$_{6}$$]$$^{2-}$$ are formed. This sorption behavior of Rf is typical of the group-4 elements Zr and Hf, and is quite different from that of the pseudo-homologue Th. It is also noted that the distribution coefficients decrease in the order Rf, Zr, Hf at 9.0 M HCl, which is consistent with the expected order of ionic radii. On the other hand, Rf appears to behave like Zr and Hf in 8 M HNO$$_{3}$$ not like Pu and Th.
