Neutron devices such as neutron detectors, optical devices including supermirror devices and He neutron spin filters, and choppers are successfully developed and installed at the Materials Life Science Facility (MLF) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), Tokai, Japan. Four software components of MLF computational environment, instrument control, data acquisition, data analysis, and a database, have been developed and equipped at MLF. MLF also provides a wide variety of sample environment options including high and low temperatures, high magnetic fields, and high pressures. This paper describes the current status of neutron devices, computational and sample environments at MLF.

In order to examine the feasibility of the experiment, we measured the background rates of different detector candidate sites, which are located at the third floor of the MLF, using a detector consisting of plastic scintillators with a fiducial mass of 500 kg. The gammas and neutrons induced by the beam as well as the backgrounds from the cosmic rays were measured, and the results are described in this article.

The IS approach for the JNC-1 site was implemented in August 2008, and this was the first experience in the world. This IS approach aimed not only to improve efficiency and effectiveness of safeguards but also to reduce burden of the plant operation by improvement of efficiency of the inspection activity. It was planned to review effectiveness of this new approach after three years from implementation. And JAEA also evaluated effects by application of the IS approach for two MOX fuel facilities in the JNC-1 site based on the three years experiences from the operator's view point. As the result of evaluation, it was confirmed that there were some difference of benefits by application of the IS approach depending on features of the facility, automation level of equipment and advance level of safeguards systems.

On the other hand, AWJ is required to reduce an amount of the abrasive because it becomes the waste. It is also difficult to monitor the cutting condition by any visual methods like a TV camera in the water becoming cloudy by both used abrasive and cut metal grit. For solving these issues, some cutting tests were conducted and (1) It was possible to predict an optimal supply rate of abrasive by considering the conservation of momentum between the water jet and the abrasive. (2) It was also possible to judge whether the material could be cut successfully or not by detecting the change in the frequency characteristics of vibration or sound caused during the cutting process.

The advanced thermal reactor (Fugen) at Fugen Decommissioning Engineering Center is characterized by its tube-cluster construction. As a part of the study of dismantling, we are considering the abrasive water jet (AWJ) technique that could be used for the dismantlement techniques of double-tubes (pressure tube and calandria tube) as one of possible methods. As a part of tests, we confirmed the possibility of abrasive recycle for cutting and the applicability of cutting monitoring technique for reducing the volume of secondary wastes and developing the cutting monitoring technique in the water.

Conceptual design studies of sodium-cooled fast reactor core are performed in Fast Reactor Cycle Technology Development Project (FaCT Project) in Japan. The representative MOX fuel core and the metal fuel core exert excellent performances on safety and reliability, sustainability, economic competitiveness, and nuclear non-proliferation. This paper reviews their feature in terms of reactor physics, and describes recent progress in design studies. In the recent design studies, much interest has been taken in the fuel composition change in the transition stage from light water reactors to fast breeder reactors. The core flexibility is also shown to fulfil the refined objectives such as high breeding and an enhancement of non-proliferation property.
