In Japan, a PFM analysis code PASCAL (PFM Analysis of Structural Components in Aging LWR) has been developed by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency to evaluate the through-wall cracking frequencies of Japanese reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) considering neutron irradiation embrittlement and pressurized thermal shock transients. In this study, as a part of the verification activities, a working group was established in Japan, with seven organizations from industry, universities and institutes voluntarily participating as members. The source program of PASCAL was released to the members of the working group. Through one year activities, the applicability of PASCAL for structural integrity assessments of domestic RPVs was confirmed with great confidence. This paper presents the details of the verification activities of the working group including the verification plan, approaches and results.

For the improvement of the structural integrity assessment methodology on reactor pressure vessels (RPVs), the probabilistic fracture mechanics (PFM) analysis code PASCAL has been developed and improved in JAEA based on latest knowledge. The PASCAL code evaluates the failure probabilities and frequencies of Japanese RPVs under transient events such as pressurized thermal shock considering neutron irradiation embrittlement. In order to confirm the reliability of the PASCAL as a domestic standard code and to promote the application of PFM on the domestic structural integrity assessments of RPVs, it is important to verify the probabilistic variables, functions and models incorporated in the PASCAL and summarize the verification processes and results as a document. On the basis of these backgrounds, we established a working group, composed of experts on this field besides the developers, on the verification of the PASCAL3 which is a PFM analysis module of PASCAL, and the source program of PASCAL3 was released to the members of working group. Through one year activities, the applicability of PASCAL in structural integrity assessments of domestic RPVs was confirmed with great confidence. This report summarizes the activities of the working group on the verification of PASCAL in FY2015.

Performance demonstration certification of non-destructive inspection for cast stainless steel (CASS) has been planned but the target flaw depth to be detected has not been determined yet in Japan. The target flaw size is closely connected to the allowable flaw size which is determined by flaw evaluation of the rules on fitness-for-service. For rational mitigation of the acceptable flaw size, application of probabilistic fracture mechanics (PFM) is one of the useful countermeasures compared with deterministic approach. In this paper, benchmark problems for a CASS pipe were proposed with intention applying and verifying PFM codes. As the fracture modes, fatigue crack extension, plastic collapse and ductile crack initiation were assumed. Six organizations participated in the benchmark analysis and failure probabilities from them were compared. As a result the failure probability of each problem showed good agreement and the code for application of CASS issue has been verified.

Utilization status of the electron accelerator and the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities

The electron accelerator and the three $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities of Takasaki Advanced Radiation Research Institute were operated for various research subjects according to the operation plan in FY 2014. The number of research subjects in FY 2014 decreased at the electron accelerator with operation stop by accelerator trouble, and increased slightly at the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities as compared with FY 2013, and research subjects were 205 and 857, respectively. Among these research subjects, 35 and 172 related to recovery from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear disaster, respectively, were performed at the electron accelerator and the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities, respectively.

Operation of the electron accelerator and the $$^{60}$$Co $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities

This paper reports on the operation status of the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities and the electron accelerator in fiscal 2014 at the Takasaki Advanced Radiation Research Institute of JAEA. The $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities were operated smoothly, whereas the electron accelerator stopped for five months because of successive troubles of discharge due to deterioration of equipment over thirty-four years. The annual operation times of the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities of the first, second and food buildings were 19,907, 13,831 and 7,293 hours, respectively, and that of the electron accelerator was 746 hours. The $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities were replenished with new five sources of 2.22 PBq, and twenty old sources were removed for disposal. The electron accelerator was repaired for each trouble, however, the complete recovery has not yet been achieved.

Distinct organic species and intracellular proteins were expressed after exposure of yeast cells to CeNPs. Although cytotoxicity was not caused by CeNPs, the results of the peptide mass fingerprint analysis of the intracellular protein revealed that Eno2p, a glycolysis enzyme, was expressed after the exposure to CeNPs. These results suggest that nanoparticles have the potential to alter microbial metabolism, leading to changes in the compositions of the released substances in the surrounding environment.

Some low-molecular-mass organic species released from the yeast after exposure to CeNPs. Although the CeNPs did not cause cytotoxicity, the organic species enhaced solubility of Ce nano particles. Formation of Ce nano-particles on the cell surface suppressed the oxidation of trivalent Ce to tetravalent Ce by Mn oxides.

The $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facility have been operated smoothly in FY2014, on the other hand, the rate of operation was down to 60% compared to FY2013 for troubles at the electron accelerator. The annual operation time in FY 2014 for the electron accelerator, the first, the second cobalt irradiation facility and food irradiation facility are 746h, 19,907h, 13,831h and 7,293h, respectively. Typical maintenance is as follows. The isolation pillar of high-voltage circuit, leakage of isolation gas were repaired, SF$$_{6}$$ isolation gas was purified at the electron accelerator. The periodic maintenance was done for the second irradiation facility. New pieces of $$^{60}$$Co sources were purchased and loaded to the food irradiation facility.
