Experimental determination of the photooxidation of aqueous I$$^{-}$$ as a source of atmospheric I$$_{2}$$

The photooxidation of aqueous iodide ions (I$$^{-}$$$$_{(aq)}$$) at sea surface results in the emission of gaseous iodine molecules (I$$_{2}$$$$_{(g)}$$) into the atmosphere. It plays a certain role in the transport of iodine from ocean to the atmosphere in the natural cycle of iodine. In this study, we determined the photooxidation parameters, the molar absorption coefficient ($$varepsilon$$$$_{iodide}$$($$lambda$$)) and the photooxidative quantum yields ($$Phi$$$$_{iodide}$$($$lambda$$)) of I$$^{-}$$$$_{(aq)}$$, in the range of 290-500 nm. Through the investigation of the influence of pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) on $$Phi$$$$_{iodide}$$($$lambda$$), the subsequent emission rates of I$$_{2}$$$$_{(g)}$$ following the photooxidation of I$$^{-}$$$$_{(aq)}$$ in deionized water solution (pH 5.6, DO 7.8 mg L$$^{-1}$$) and artificial seawater solution (pH 8.0, DO 7.0 mg L$$^{-1}$$) were estimated. A global chemistry-climate model employed herein to assess the I$$_{2}$$$$_{(g)}$$ ocean emission on a global scale indicated that the photooxidation of I$$^{-}$$$$_{(aq)}$$ by solar light can enhance the atmospheric iodine budget by up to $$sim$$8% over some oceanic regions.

Valence fluctuation phenomena in rare-earth intermetallic compounds have attracted attention because the quantum criticality of the valence transition has been proposed theoretically. Recently, it was found that $$beta$$-YbAlB$$_4$$ shows quantum criticality without tuning and has a strong mixed-valence state. In this study, we measured the magnetization curve and X-ray magnetoabsorption in $$alpha$$-YbAl$$_{1-x}$$Fe$$_x$$B$$_4$$ ($$x=0.115$$), which is a locally isostructural polymorph of $$beta$$-YbAlB$$_4$$. The magnetization and X-ray experiments were performed in fields up to 55 and 40 T, respectively. A small increase in the Yb valence was observed at fields where the magnetization curve exhibited a change in slope.

JAEA performed decontamination experiments at two test sites that combined a range of buildings and different types of land use, located in Date and Minami Soma municipalities as field pilot projects in order to accumulate knowledge and data for full-scale decontamination activities performed by local governments. In the pilot projects, we established its plan using practical decontamination methods that can be easily implemented, according to decontamination targets (e.g., forests, agricultural land, residential house and roads) at each site. As a result of the decontamination, the average air dose rates were reduced to approximately one half of the values before decontamination.

The Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) at Fermilab produces intense neutrino beam to investigate the phenomena of the neutrino mixing and oscillation. The Hadron Absorber, consists of thick blocks of aluminum, iron and concrete, is placed at the end of decay volume as a dump for primary proton and secondary particles generated in NuMI. In order to estimate the shielding effect, the reaction rate measurements with activation detector were carried out on the back surface of the absorber. The induced activities in the detectors were measured by analyzing their $$gamma$$-ray spectra using HPGe detectors. Two kind of peak was showed on two-dimensional distributions of obtained reaction rates at right angle to the beam direction. One was strong peaks at the both horizontal side. And, another smaller was at the top. It was concluded that these peaks were the results of particles streaming through the gaps in the Hadron Absorber shielding.

The temperature and magnetic field dependences of Yb valence were observed in the heavy fermion compoundYbRh$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The measurements revealed that the Yb valence decreases with decreasing temperature in the range from 200 to 2 K and increases with increasing magnetic field in the range from 0 to 33 T without showing an abrupt change in the Yb valence. The Yb valence is in the range from 2.92 to 2.96 depending on temperature and magnetic field. With respect to the valence being 2.92 at 0 T and 2.93 at 33 T in 2 K, YbRh$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ is a valence fluctuation compound and does not reach the integer trivalent state at high magnetic field. These results endorse the conventional knowledge that the valence of Yb is very close to the integer value of 3+, decreases with decreasing temperature, and becomes closer to 3+ with increasing magnetic field.

In an antiproton production (Pbar) target station of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL), the secondary particles produced by bombarding a target with 120-GeV protons are shielded by a thick iron shield. In order to obtain experimental data on high-energy proton accelerator facilities, we indirectly measured $$>$$ 100-MeV neutrons at the outside of the iron shield. The measurement was performed by using the Au activation method coupled with a low-background $$gamma$$-ray counting system. As an indicator for the neutron flux, we determined the production rates of 8 spallation nuclides ($$^{196}$$Au, $$^{188}$$Pt, $$^{189}$$Ir, $$^{185}$$Os, $$^{175}$$Hf, $$^{173}$$Lu, $$^{171}$$Lu, and $$^{169}$$Yb) in the Au activation detector. The measured production rates were compared with the theoretical production rates calculated using PHITS. We proved that the Au activation method can serve as a powerful tool for indirect measurements of $$>$$ 100-MeV neutrons that play a vital role in neutron transport.

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism of a valence fluctuating state in Eu at high magnetic fields

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Eu L edge in two compounds exhibiting valence fluctuation, namely EuNi$$_2$$(Si$$_{0.18}$$Ge$$_{0.82}$$)$$_2$$ and EuNi$$_2$$P$$_2$$, has been investigated at high magnetic fields of up to 40T. A distinct XMCD peak corresponding to the trivalent state (Eu$$^{3+}$$), whose ground state is nonmagnetic (J = 0), was observed in addition to the main XMCD peak corresponding to the magnetic (J = 7/2) divalent state (Eu$$^{2+}$$). This result indicates that the 5$$d$$ electrons belonging to both valence states are magnetically polarized. It was also found that the ratio $$P$$$$_{5d}$$(3+)/$$P$$$$_{5d}$$(2+) between the polarization of 5$$d$$ electrons($$P$$$$_{5d}$$) in the Eu$$^{3+}$$ state and that of Eu$$^{2+}$$ depends on the material. The possible origin of the XMCD and an explanation of the material dependence of $$P$$$$_{5d}$$(3+)/$$P$$$$_{5d}$$(2+) are discussed in terms of hybridization between the conduction electrons and the f electrons.

The muon science facility (MUSE) is one of the experimental areas of the J-PARC. The MUSE facility is located in the Materials and Life Science Facility (MLF), which is a building integrated to include both neutron and muon science programs. Construction of the MLF building was started at the beginning of 2004, and was recently completed at the end of the 2006 fiscal year. We have been working on the installation of the beamline components, expecting the first muon beam in the autumn of 2008.

The magnetic-field-induced valence transition in EuNi$$_2$$(Si$$_{1-x}$$Ge$$_x$$)$$_2$$ (x=0.82, 0.85) has been studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy at low temperatures. The field dependence of the Eu valence is directly observed for the first time. We find a significant decrease in the valences at high magnetic fields above 40 T. The valence of Eu changes from v = 2.75 at a zero field to v = 2.33 at 40 T for x = 0.82. The results are analyzed using a theoretical model. The hybridization parameter V between the Eu$$^{2+}$$ and Eu$$^{3+}$$ states and the energy separation $$Delta$$$$E$$ are determined, which are crucial for quantum mechanical mixing.

Superconducting and magnetic properties of the heavy fermion superconductor CePt$$_3$$Si were studied by means of the $$mu$$SR method. The muon Knight shift is invariant on passing the temperature through $$T_c$$ down to 20 mK at 17 kOe, indicating that the local spin susceptibility does not change in the superconducting state.

We report on the Magnetism, magnetic penetration depth and the Knight shift in polycrystalline sample of CePt$$_3$$Si by means of muon spin rotation and relaxation method. The appearance of the internal field under the zero magnetic field in whole volume of the specimen, was observed, which indicating clear evidence of antiferromagnetism. The muon Knight shift was measured down to 20mK at 17kOe. Three different frequencies are seen in the muon spin rotation spectra, which depend on the temperature. The symmetry of the superconducting Cooper pair will be discussed.

The response of vortex state to the magnetic field in Nb$$_3$$Sn is probed using muon spin rotation and small-angle neutron scattering. A transformation of vortex structure between hexagonal and squared lattice is observed over a relatively low field range of 2-3T. The gradual increase of the magnetic penetration depth with increasing field provides microscopic evidence for anisotropic (or multigapped) $$s$$-wave pairing suggested by the Raman scattering experiment. This result renders need for careful examination on the difference of electronic properties between Nb$$_3$$Sn and V$$_3$$Si.
